Teachings of the Bible
In the letter of St. Paul to the Philippians, Jesus is revealed as a Person who is a perfect model of a
humble servant. He obeys what the Father wills for Him and remains faithful to the Father even to the point of
suffering and death.
The Humility of Jesus
(Phil. 2:6-11)
Though being Divine in nature, He did not claim in fact equality with God, but emptied Himself, taking
on the nature of a servant, made in human likeness, and in His appearance found as a man.
He humbled himself by being obedient to death, death on the cross. That is why God exalted Him and
gave Him the name which outshines all names; so that at the name of Jesus all knees should bend in heaven, on
earth and among the dead, and all tongues proclaim that Christ Jesus is the Lord to the Glory of God the
Father.
The scripture reading above shows that in Jesus’ life, He was a man on a mission, for He always follow
the will of the Father. His mission is the greatest and is considered as the most perfect of all missions for Jesus
did not only fulfil it by words but most importantly in deed. God, the Father sent Him for He has a greater
purpose, and He intentionally fulfilled it through His life and ministry. Jesus is always willing to do what the
Father willed for Him, even to the point of surrendering His whole life for the salvation of all.

Teachings of the Church
For us to understand further the mission of Jesus Christ and how He has obeyed the will of His Father,
let us go over to the following points taken from the Catechism of the Catholic Church and some Bible verses
and passages.
Jesus Christ is the definitive fulfilment of God’s revelation. He is the fullness of God’s revelation in the
sense that through Him, God has communicated to humanity the totality of truth. He chose to reveal it to man
though at the same time the Church admits that Christian revelation is not yet completely explicit. Through
Christ, it was God Himself who made known to man His will.
Jesus: Reveals the Divine Plan of the Father. The Divine Plan of Revelation is realized simultaneously
“by deeds and words which are intrinsically bound up with each other” and shed light on each other. It
involves a specific divine pedagogy: God communicates himself to man gradually. He prepares Him to
welcome by stages the supernatural Revelation that is to culminate in the person and mission of the
Incarnate Word, Jesus Christ (CCC 53). Man is capable of receiving this Revelation from God through His
natural facilities but cannot grasp the Truth without God’s disclosure of His plan through Jesus Christ (CCC
35).
In the Old Testament, God has spoken through the Prophets. They were God’s means of communication
of His laws and decrees to Israel. For a period, it was this instrumentality that bridged God’s revelation. But
God had to choose prophets now and then since as human beings, they died, and because of human frailties,
they had that tendency to fall back as evidenced by God’s numerous admonitions towards Israel and the
prophets.
Jesus: Reveals the truth of the potential of salvation. Christ in the very revelation of the mystery of the
Father and of His love, makes man fully manifest to Himself and brings to light His exalted vocation. “It is
in Christ, the image of the invisible God, that man has been created in the image and likeness of the
Creator”. It is in Christ, Redeemer and Savior that the Divine image, disfigured in man by the first sin has
been restored to its original beauty and ennabled by the grace of God (CCC 1701).
Jesus: Is chosen to reveal the Father. Jesus reveals that He is the exclusive way to the Father, saying, “I
am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life; no one comes to the Father, but by Me” (John 14:6) for Jesus is “in
the Father, and the Father is in Jesus” (John 14:11). And as a result “Jesus is the only One who knows Him
and can reveal Him (CCC 151). Jesus draws His Mission from the Father (John 10:18), embracing the
Father’s will (Matt. 26: 39-42) and doing the things the Father has directed Him (John 12:49) and given
Him the power to do (John 13:3).
God having spoken to us everything through His Son is evidenced by the fact that Jesus Himself is the
Word. He is the definitive Word, and no other Word will come after Him. As what had St. John of the Cross
said in his comment on Heb. 1:1-12, “He has spoken to everything to us at one in this sole Word – and He
has no more to say”.
Jesus: Reveals the Father through Action. Jesus reveals the Father through His actions: The Cleansing of
the Temple (John 2:16); healing on the Sabbath in Jerusalem (John 5). Jesus repeatedly claims that the
Father has sent Him (John 6:27; 8:27) and glorified Him (John 8:54). The Father is revealed in the Son at
His Baptism (“This is My Beloved Son with whom I am well pleased” – Matt. 3:17) and at the
Transfiguration (“This is My Son, My chosen one; listen to Him” – Luke 9:35).
Jesus: Reveals the Father in His Teaching. Jesus reveals that God is a loving Father: “Again I say to you,
if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven”
(Matt 18:19); the Father knows what we need (Luke 12:30), and it is the “Father’s good pleasure to give us
the kingdom” (Luke 12:32). Jesus refers to the Father in the parable of The Prodigal Son (Luke 15).
Jesus: Reveals the Father in His Ministry, Teaching and Healing Ministry. During the three (3) years
between His Baptism and His death and resurrection, Jesus travelled throughout the land of the Hebrews
ministering to the people. As we read about the teaching of Jesus in the Bible, it is characterized by
authority (Mt. 7:29, Mk. 1:22) and wisdom (Mt. 13:54, Mt. 6:2). Amazed and astonished (Mt. 22:33, Mk.
7:28) are the words of those who heard Jesus teach.
Jesus expressed His compassion and proved His authority with miracles. He was reported to having
calmed the storm and walked on the sea. Jesus gave sight to the blind, caused the lame to walk, and healed
people with horrible diseases. He cast out demons, and He even raised people from the dead. For thirty (30)
years, Jesus had lived in obscurity. But now, He was demonstrating His power over the physical and the
Spiritual world, over life and death.
Finally as Catholic Christians, we believe that God revealed Himself in many and different ways. But
among those revelations, we considered Jesus, the only Son of God as the fullness of His revelation because of
the following truths:
Through Jesus, God has communicated to humanity the totality of God’s truth.
Through Jesus we further know and discover who and what the Father is by His life and teachings.
Through Jesus, we have known the unending mercy and unconditional love of the Father through His deeds
and works in his teaching and healing ministry.
Through Jesus, He reveals the Divine Plan of His Father to save the humanity by offering His Son, Jesus
Christ, to save us.

Jesus: The Model of a Perfect Man
Christ is the supreme norm of Christian moral life. His Obedience to the Father’s will is the starting
point for moral development. In the scriptural reading, Jesus knew that the time has come for Him to fulfil the
salvation of humankind. Thus, He reminds the people to follow Him.
Christian moral life is patterned after God and His Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus is our model. His life is a
perfect example of how we should live ours. He is a man for others. His openness goes to the extent of
encountering others as a person who needs integral liberation from sin and oppression. As an authentic man
among men, He basically is also a man oriented to God. Jesus Himself acknowledged this, “I have come in my
Father’s name… (Jn. 5:43).
If we are to follow Christ, we must accept Him in His totality. Hence, Christians accept Christ a model
of a free man for others and a man of God. Accepting Christ involves embracing His will and following His
way. This includes allowing Him to live in us, teaching us within by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Growing in Love and Holiness
The response to Jesus’s call is through faith, a faith that is more than just believing a set of truths but a
faith which is ready to follow the way to Christ – the way to life! To live a life of faith requires bearing witness
to the Lord by keeping His commandments and living the Gospel. This is exemplified not only through
religious devotions but is exercised through service to our fellowmen. Jesus told us that whenever we feed,
clothe, or give drink to a stranger, to one of the least, we do it to Him.
Jesus is the incarnate love of God and the perfect model of holiness. His death for our salvation
demonstrates the love of God has for us. God loves us first (Jn. 4:10) and this love of God has appeared in our
midst. He gave Jesus for us to emulate so that love and holiness will not just be ideas to grasp but a way of life
to be lived. To grow in the love of God is to love our neighbors. Pope Benedict XVI in his encyclical Deus
Caritas Est (God is Love) mentions that there is an unbreakable bond between love of God and love of
neighbour. One is closely connected to the other to say that we love God becomes a lie if we are closed to our
neighbour or hate him altogether (DCE 16).
Many of us relate holiness to saints or certain persons like priests or religious. This idea blinds us from
becoming holy. CFC states that all baptized are called to live the full challenge of Christian holiness. In reality,
love is the center of holiness.
Each one of us is called by Christ to holiness. To be holy is to be Christ-like. Holiness involves the
practice of self-denial, prayer, and cooperation with the graces of the Holy Spirit. To grow in love and holiness,
we need to have an active faith by translating our beliefs into concrete acts of love.
Challenge of Following Christ
Man as a person is the image and likeness of God. This means that each and every one of us bears
witness to God, since we have our origin in Him. Obedience and submission to the Father’s will is the primary
element of discipleship; just as Jesus obeyed His Father in heaven, we are all called to do the same. Moreover,
real followers of Christ also answer the invitation of Jesus to “be perfect as His Father is perfect”. We are to “let
go” and “let “God” into our lives by clinging to the very person of Christ, to make Him the foremost priority in
our lives.
The challenge to us in the performance of our moral responsibilities also includes acknowledgement of
our sinfulness and conversion. Conversion is not just a one-moment definitive change, it is a life-long task. If
we put Jesus in the center of our moral life, we will be able to turn away from sin. Through Him and with him,
we can form our moral vision, moral norms, and decision-making process. The Christian moral person is the
one who experiences the liberating and transforming presence of Christ. Thus, our actions and moral decisions
must be guided by the life of Jesus as presented in the Gospel.
