Assignment 4

The assignment consists of four questions related to control systems, focusing on PI and PD controllers, stability conditions, and transfer functions. It requires calculations for damping factors, time constants, and stability criteria using the Routh-Hurwitz criterion. The deadline for submission is September 8, 2022, at the department office.

ASSIGNMENT 4

For all problems, assume

𝐺𝑓 = 𝐺𝑚 = 1

Question 1

A PI controller is used in a control system having a first order process.

i. Find expressions for the damping factor and the time constant for the closed loop response.
ii. Find Kc if,

𝐾𝑝 = 1

𝜏𝑝 = 0.5 𝑚𝑖𝑛

𝜏𝐼 = 0.12 𝑚𝑖𝑛

𝜉 = 0.65

Question 2

A heat exchanger arrangement ancillary to a catalytic cracking unit is characterized by the transfer
function:

G p s  
20
1  0.67s 10.2s 2  3.1s  1

Deduce the condition for stability of the heat exchanger based on Routh-Hurwitz criterion for the
closed loop containing a PI controller.

Question 3

𝑦𝑠𝑝 𝑦
In the control system shown in above, find the value of 𝐾𝑐 for which the system is on the verge
of instability. The controller is replaced by a PD controller, for which the transfer function is
𝐾𝑐 (𝜏𝐷 𝑠 + 1). If 𝐾𝑐 = 10, determine the range of 𝜏𝐷 for which the system is stable.

Question 4

Deduce the conditions for stability for a control system with the following configurations

G p s  
1
s  10.5s  1
PI-controller with Kc = 5 and  I  0.25

Assume the transfer functions of the measuring device and final control elements equal 1.

(ii) What will the stability be if a P-controller of the same gain is used instead?
