❖ INTRODUCTION :
With the development of technology more and more challenging
problems are faced by the scientist and technologists in the field of
manufacturing. There are too many difficulty in adopting traditional machining process or
traditional machining process. So , to tackle such difficult jobs we need to simple
modification of the traditional machining process or we have to develop the new process
which is known as non traditional machining process or nontraditional machining process.
❖TRADITIONAL MACHINING PROCESS
▪ DEFINITION: A traditional machining process is one in which a human operator operates the machining tools manually by
hand . it also known as traditional machining process . Cutting tool material strength is higher than the job material.
Some of these are:-
Lathe machine
milling machine
vertical drilling machine
grinding machine
❖NON-TRADITIONAL MACHINING PROCESS
▪ DEFINITION : An unconventional(non-traditional) machining process can be defined as a material removal process in which no
direct contact between tool and work-piece occurs. In this type of machining process, a form of energy is used to remove
unwanted material from a given workpiece.
Some of these are:-
Ultra sonic machining(USM)
Electro-chemical machining (ECM)
Laser Beam Machining (LBM)
Electron Beam Machining (EBM)
Electric discharge machining (EDM)
Abrasive Jet Machining(AJM)
Water Jet Machining(WJM)

❖ DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TRADITIONALAND NON-TRADITIONAL MACHINING :
➢ INSTRUMENTS EMPLOYED:
A physical tool must always be present in a traditional machining operation. A cutting tool in a lathe machine, for example. A physical tool,
on the other hand, may not be present in a non-traditional machining process. In laser machines, for example, laser beams operate,
whereas electrochemical machining necessitates the use of a physical tool.
➢ ACCURACY:
The accuracy and surface quality of traditional machining is lower, but non-traditional machining is more accurate and has a better
surface finish.
➢ CONTACT BETWEEN THE TOOL AND THE WORKPIECE:
The traditional machining method requires direct contact between the tool and the workpiece, whereas nontraditional machining does
not.
➢ WASTE MATERIALS:
Because traditional machining processes use tools that have a shorter lifespan due to increased surface contact and wear, they are more
likely to waste material. Non-traditional machining produces less waste material due to little or no wear with longer-lasting tools.
➢ SOURCE OF ENERGY:
The term “traditional machining” refers to a method that employs mechanical energy. Thermal, chemical, and
electrical energy are the three basic types of energy employed in non-traditional energy.
❖ CONCLUSION :
The non traditional methods of machining have several specific advantages
over traditional methods of machining. It makes the tasks look easier. These methods are not
limited by hardness, toughness and brittleness of materials. And these process find place in
production treatment to produce several product with better quality and exact values and
minimum cost. So , now a days even having traditional method as advancement several
industries prefer the non traditional methods .
