Kaufmann Desert House Floor Plan Analysis

Richard Neutra designed the Kaufman House in Palm Springs, California in 1946-1947. The central social area of the house extends horizontally into different directions, with all spaces prolonging to the exterior. Materials like aluminum, glass, stone, steel and concrete were used, similar to what is available in the California desert region. While situated in the desert, the house has green areas, making it look like a large metal structure set in a green landscape, as Neutra aimed to make buildings that were "made, not grown."
