LABORATORY TASK #02

Objective:
Our objective is to determines increase in length and decrease in total diameter of a circular
rod of given dimensions when given load is applied on it, by simulating the structure on Ansys
software and comparing our results with manual calculations by hand.

Procedure:
Preprocessing:
1. First of all, we create the required shape (solid cylinder) by selecting Preprocessor>
Modeling>Create>Volumes>Solid Cylinder after which we are greeted by the following
screen. We enter the required dimensions in this screen as follows, click OK and get a
Structure on the screen as given:

2. Next, we select the material properties by going to Material Props>Material
Models>Structural>Linear>Elastic>isotropic. We then get the following screen where we
again, enter the proper values of material as given and press OK:

3. Now we define the type of element type as Solid>Brick 8 node 185 (we will try other
materials as well) from the following screen and click OK

4. Now we declare Mesh type by selecting Mesh Tool from Meshing and select Hex/Wedge
Shape and selecting Sweep function. From the pop-up screen, we then select “pick all”
Solution:
1. We start off the solution by defining the analysis type as static from the solution menu
2. First, we apply the Constraints by Selecting all nodes on the right side of rod by box selection
as given in screen:

3. Next, we apply the load as required by in the original problem in the form of Negative
Pressure on the surface area by selecting the surface area as follows and entering the value of
Pressure in negative form in the screen that comes afterwards.

4. Now we finally get to solve the model, for this we select the ‘Current LS’ option from the
solve tab in the solution menu. LS meaning that the solution is in the current load step. We
are then greeted by the following window:

5. After confirming our model properties and status, we click on OK to solve the model
6. The computer takes some time and then gives us a window declaring ‘Solution is done!’. As
the text suggests, our problem has been solved and is waiting for us to view the results.
Post processing:
1. Once the solution is done, we can view the deformed shape by going into General
Postproc>Plot Results>Deformed Shape and selecting Deformed+undeformed Shape, we get
the Deformed shape in relevance to the undeformed shape as follows in Isometric view and
to show Deflection in linear direction and contraction in X Direction:

2. We can also view the deformations as Statistical values in the form of list by going to List
Results>Nodal Solution> DOF Solution>Displacement Vector Sum, we get a long list
showing different results at different Nodes, but we are mostly interested in the bottom of the
list which Gives us the maximum displacement values:

Changing Values:
We also find the solution of this problem on Ansys by changing some of the properties of
the material such as the Meshing type and Element Type by the above given method. Such
Examples are given Below:

Hand Calculations:
Conclusion:
From this Lab, we can conclude that the results presented by Ansys are much closer to
Hand-Solved solution in terms of linear Deformation in the direction of the force as compared to
the calculations of contraction of the material.
We also learned that we get the closest results to the Solutions done by hand when we use 8
nodes in Hexagonal Mesh
