What I Need to Know

Hi! We have been progressing so much now. Yet here is another topic that we
need to take up. Have you observed what is happening around you recently? What
is our society experiencing now? What might have caused it? Read on to learn more
about our environment.

Environmental health refers to aspects of human well-being (including quality

of life) that are affected by environmental factors which are physical, chemical,
biological, social and psychosocial. These include various environmental health
issues that need to be addressed with regards to the community development and
project implementation. Community development is important as it provides the
foundation from which a city builds to enhance its citizens' lives. It creates strong,
diverse communities capable of attracting and retaining talent, launching and
growing businesses and solving problems that arise. Therefore, making action plans
is indeed helpful towards community development.

In this module, you will know and suggest some ways on how to prevent and
manage environmental health issues. As a young aspiring leader of your community,
you need to know how to make action plans towards community development. In this
lesson, you will be given the opportunity to design a program for community
development.

Are you ready to be a responsible citizen, Lets’ bring it on…

Good Day! How was your first module? Enlightening right? Each one of us has a role
in preserving our environment. So, shall we continue?

Listed below are goals that you need to achieve at the end of this module:

LEARNING COMPETENCY:

 Suggests ways to prevent and manage environmental health issues.

H9CE-Ie-f-13

 Participates in implementing an environmental project such as building and

maintaining a school garden or conducting a war on waste campaign (depends
on feasibility).
H9CE-Ig-h-14

1
At the end of the module, you should be able to:

 Identify ways to prevent environmental health issues;

 Share insights on ways in protecting the environment;
 Define what community health action project implementation
is;
 Understand the importance of project assessment; and
 Apply community development and program planning skills to
create effective and culturally relevant communication
strategies and interventions to promote

What’s New

Environmental awareness is to understand the fragility of our environment and

the importance of its protection. Promoting environmental awareness is an easy way
to become an environmental steward and participate in creating a brighter future for
our children.

What is It

Here are simple ways you can help the environment and inspire others
to become more environmentally aware.

1. Replace disposable items with reusable

Anything you use and throw away can potentially spend centuries in a landfill.
See below for simple adjustments you can make to decrease the amount of
disposable items in your daily life.

3
 Carry your own reusable cup or water bottle
 Use airtight, reusable food containers instead of sandwich bags and plastic
wrap
 Pack a waste-free lunch: carry your utensils, cloth napkin, and containers in
an reusable lunch bag
 Bring your own bags to the grocery store
 Consider buying bulk containers of your preferred beverages and refilling a
reusable bottle, instead of buying individually-packaged drinks
 Use rechargeable batteries

2. Pass on paper
We are living in the Digital Era, but think about all the paper products you use
in your daily life. These actions still align with reusing and repurposing, though may
take a little more time for transition.
 Join a library instead of buying books or buy a Kindle app
 Print as little as possible; and if you must, print on both sides
 Wrap gifts in fabric and tie with ribbon; both are reusable and prettier than
paper and sticky-tape
 Stop using paper towels and incorporate washable cloths
 Look at labels to make sure you only use FSC-certified wood and paper
products
 Cut out products made by palm oil companies that contribute to deforestation
in Indonesia and Malaysia

3. Conserve water & electricity

The tips you see below will seem like no-brainers; however, it may take to
become more aware of your unconscious habits.
 Turn the sink water off when brushing your teeth
 Water the lawn in the morning or evening; cooler air causes less evaporation
 Switch off anything that uses electricity when not in use (lights, televisions,
computers, printers, etc.)
 Unplug devices when possible; even when an appliance is turned off, it may
still use power
 Remove chemicals inside of the house; research companies that use plant-
derived ingredients for their household cleaning products
 Remove chemicals outside of the house; use eco-friendly pesticides and
herbicides that won’t contaminate groundwater
 Consider signing up for a renewable energy producer that uses 100%
renewable energy to power homes

4. Support local & environmentally friendly

Here are a few reasons to start buying local:
 Reduces plastic and paper waste
 Boosts cost efficiency
 Enables bulk purchasing
 Helps support your neighbors
 Retains farmland within the community
 Builds up the local economy

4
 Uses fewer chemicals for both growing and transporting

5. Recycle (& then recycle properly)

Implementing recycling habits into your daily life is one of the most effective
ways to help lessen landfill waste, conserve natural resources, save habitats, reduce
pollution, cut down on energy consumption, and slow down global warming.
 Confirm you are using the proper separation containers for your household
per the local recycling services
 Remember to make sure your trash bags are recycled or biodegradable, and
always cut up the plastic rings from packs of beer or soda to prevent wildlife
from getting caught
 Educate yourself about what can and cannot be recycled, as not all plastic
and cardboard is acceptable (like pizza boxes for example, due to the grease)
 Learn how to identify and dispose of hazardous waste properly

If you’re already taking action on the suggestions above, see below for additional
tips and ideas:
 Add these simple lists to your digital checklist and pick one at a time to tackle.
After a week or so, check it off the list and move on to the next. Remember to
pat yourself on the back! You just created a change in your lifestyle!
 Find a comfortable compromise for your life. Purchase a pack of affordable,
reusable rags and give them a specific purpose. For example, perhaps you
always clean your counter tops with paper towels; try wiping them down with
cloth towels instead.
 Remember to highlight your successes and share with others!
 Calculate your environmental footprint to see how much impact just one
person has on the world’s resources and adjust accordingly.

What’s More

What is a Community Health Action Project?

It is a course of action or a proposed strategy done by an individual, group or
organization for achieving community health enhancements, developments or
improvements. This is developed from the needs and gaps identified from the
gathered data. Action plan or project typically includes establishing and clarifying
desired outcomes, goals, objectives, activities, assignments, and deadlines for
coalition members supporting the action plan and focuses on doing work in the
community to support priority health needs.

Having an action plan/project:

• Lends credibility to your organization. An action plan shows members of the
community (including grant makers) that your organization is well ordered and
dedicated to getting things done.

5
• Prevents the possibility of overlooking details.
• Helps understand what is and isn’t possible for your organization to do.
• Helps your community be more efficient by saving time, energy, and
resources.
• Increase the chances that people will do what needs to be done by making
them more accountable.

PLANNING STEPS

The following steps are integral components to developing a Community

Health Action Project. It is important to complete each step at some point; to address
local chronic disease prevention and control.

 Review and analyze results of community assessment.

 Choose a group of people to work together on developing the Community

Health Action Project.

 Identify outcomes that would address the issues.

 Identify challenges, obstacles, or potential barriers to successfully
implementing interventions.
 Identify necessary resources and where you will obtain them.
 Choose individuals and community partners who will support, identify with,
and implement goals and objectives.
 Consider a timeline for conducting activities.
 Include monitoring and evaluation activities.
 Review the completed action plan. Carefully check it.

Project assessments consider the potential environmental and socio-
economic impacts of a project before it begins to ensure that negative impacts can
be adequately mitigated.

What I Have Learned

Appropriate and well carried out needs assessment is crucial to implementing
successful humanitarian projects, community development, and disaster response. A
thorough needs assessment will contribute to program planning, monitoring and
evaluation, as well as project accountability and is a key step in the project planning
life cycle.

Once you have carried out an assessment, decisions can be made based on
the best evidence at hand. By doing the needs assessment, before you
actually start the project, gives you a chance to compare among alternative options
to address a particular problem.

A needs assessment is a business tool that can give you valuable insights
into the actions or processes your organization requires to function more efficiently.
