Notions of Accountability, Fairness, and Transparency:

ACCOUNTABILITY Is the ability to account for your actions and performance to your
stakeholders.
Accountability. – What it is: Accountability. – What is not:
 To be liable to explain or justify one’s  Not synonymous with responsibility
action and decisions.  Not imply management relationship
 Process of explanation and justification  Not a “one off” annual event
 Testing, forming a judgment and taking  Not the same as appraisal

It is the quality of making judgments that are free from discrimination.


Fairness comes from the old English faeger meaning “pleasing attractive”. In the
context of business organization, it involves balancing the interest involved in all-
decision making including any decisions related to hiring, firing, and the
compensation and reward system. Has to do with justice, which is to give to
another which is due to him or her.

TRANSPARENCY Is essential in building families, and through families, in strengthening civil


society as a whole. It has important mechanism for guaranteeing social

accountability. Allows stakeholders to understand whether the activities of social
institutions such as international organizations and NGOs provide a genuine
service to civil society and whether money is used appropriately.

Notions for Competence, Professionalism and Responsibility


 Technical Skills encompass the ability to apply specialized knowledge or expertise.
 Human Skills is the ability to understand, communicate with, motivate, and support other
people, both individually and in groups, which defines human skills.
 Conceptual Skills are the skills and mental ability that managers must have to analyze and
diagnose complex situation.

Instruction: Read the case study/article below and answer the following

People’s Recovery, Empowerment and Development (PREDA)


Foundation ($5,000) to support 50 scholars. All passed their grade level this school
year. The program provides adequate, holistic recovery/rehabilitation. It offers “skills for
life” training for kids to cope with life’s challenges better. It also has psychological
services and counseling available to the beneficiaries.

Based in Olongapo City, PREDA was founded in 1974 by Irish missionary priest Fr.
Shay Cullen, who has worked to protect women and children. It has provided home and
protection for sexually abused and commercially exploited children. The PREDA service
reaches all areas of Luzon and provides residential care and therapeutic intervention in
a healthy environment with experienced and trained staff. Legal services are also given
to the children. Last February, PREDA rescued 13 young girls from the sex bars in
Olongapo City and four boys and girls from illegal detention in jail.
