Rankine Cycle Analysis for Engineers

This document discusses the ideal Rankine cycle, a model used to analyze steam power plants and turbines. It provides examples of calculating work, thermal efficiency, steam flow rates, and other parameters for Rankine cycles operating between various temperature and pressure conditions. It also considers the advantages of using supercritical steam conditions and multiple expansion stages to increase overall efficiency.

IDEAL R ANKINE CYCLE

1. A Rankine engine expands steam from 540 psia and 750°F to a condensing temperature of 90°F.
Determine (a) the work, (b) the thermal efficiency, (c) the steam rate, (d) the mep of the ideal
engine. Ans. (a) 492.1 Btu/ lb., (b) 37.16%, (c) 5.17 lb./ hp-hr., (d) 7.11 psi.
2. A Rankine engine receives saturated steam at 110 psia and exhausts it at 15 psia. For 1 lb.,
calculate the work and thermal efficiency. (b) Suppose the exhaust from the foregoing engine is
passed without loss through a steam separator which removes all the liquid. Suppose now that
the remaining saturated steam at 15 psia enters another Rankine engine and expands to 1 psia.
How much work is done for 1 lb. of original steam and what is the overall thermal efficiency? (c)
Does it appear that the work to be obtained by carrying the expansion of steam below
atlllospheric pressure is significant? Is a low pressure of 1 psia feasible?

Ans. (a) 145.6 Btu/ lb., 14.47%, (b) 151.1 Btu/ lb., 29.5%.

3. Consider a steam power plant operating on the simple ideal Rankine cycle. The steam enters the
turbine at 4 MPa, 400 o C and is condensed in the condenser at a pressure of 100 kPa. Determine
(a) the thermal efficiency of the cycle.
4. Water is the working fluid in an ideal Rankine cycle. Saturated vapor enters the turbine at 6.9
MPa. The condenser pressure is 6.9 kPa. Determine (a) the net work per unit mass of steam flow
in kJ/kg, (b) the heat transfer to the steam passing through the boiler in kJ/kg, (c) the thermal
efficiency and (d) the back work ratio.

6. Consider an ideal Rankine cycle using water with a high-pressure side of the cycle at a
supercritical pressure. Such a cycle has a potential advantage of minimizing local temperature
differences between the fluids in the steam generator, such as the instance in which the high-
temperature energy source is the hot exhaust gas from a gas-turbine engine. Calculate the
thermal efficiency of the cycle if the state entering the turbine is 25 MPa, 500°C, and the
condenser pressure is 5 kPa. What is the steam quality at the turbine exit?
