If - Conditionals 8th Grade

This document discusses conditional sentences using "if" clauses to connect a condition and a resulting statement. It outlines three types of conditional sentences using different verb tenses: Type One uses "if + present simple, will + base verb"; Type Two uses "if + past simple, would + base verb"; and Type Three uses "if + past perfect, would + have + past participle". It also notes that "unless" can be used to mean "if...not" or "except if". Exercises are provided to practice forming conditional sentences using the correct verb tenses.

If - Conditionals

Conditional sentences connect two things : a condition and a result. Something

happens as a result of something else, or happens only if a certain condition is met.

The condition and the result can be real or imagined and can refer to past, present or future
time. The condition part of the sentence is called ‘ if clause’. The result part of the sentence
is known as the’main clause’.

Type One: If + present simple, …will + base verb

We use the present tense with if to talk about the future.

Example: If I have time, I will phone you.

Type two: If + past simple, …would + base verb

We use past tense with if to show that something is not real or not probable now.

Example: If I had more money, I would buy a car now.

Type three: If + past perfect, … would + have +past participle

We use the past perfect to talk about unreal past events- things that did not happen.

Example: If you had asked me about the homework, I would have helped you.
