1. Introduction
Welcome to English Grammar I – 05011. This course is part of the
Enseñanza del inglés para I y II Ciclos major, which is accredited by
SINAES.
As future teachers, this course is very relevant because you will learn SINAES Official Logo
and master intermediate linguistic skills in the use and understanding of
grammar structures.
2. Course Description
This is a theoretical and practical course designed to develop intermediate
linguistic skills in the use and understanding of grammar structures. Grammar
is viewed as a means of communicating ideas rather than as a set of rules.
Therefore, aspects such as meaning and use of the studied structures will be
emphasized.
The aim is to permit students to gain confidence in order to write, read, speak,
and listen in English and to acquire a deeper and more detailed understanding
of the different grammatical features of the language.
3. General Objectives
By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
3
____________________________________________________________
4. Contents
• Present, Past, Future and Perfect Tenses
• Modals and Similar Expressions
• Nouns, Quantifiers, and Articles
• Adjectives and Adverbs
• Gerunds and Infinitives
• Pronouns and Phrasal Verbs
5. Methodology
The general procedure that will be followed in this course can be summarized
as follows:
Here is a summary of what a workshop is and is not and the differences between
them and the classes in a regular face-to-face system.
4
____________________________________________________________
✓ A workshop is the place where you can clarify the concepts you already
studied on your own.
✓ A workshop is the place where you practice and receive feedback on the
contents you already studied on your own.
✓ You HAVE TO have studied all the contents (not read superficially, but
studied, analyzed, and practiced.)
✓ You HAVE TO have completed all the required exercises and activities and
checked them with the answer key provided.
✓ You HAVE TO be active to take advantage of the time as much as possible.
5
____________________________________________________________
✓ Being fully engaged during the workshop is key, so you must not be at
work or traveling from one place to another either by walking or driving
during the session.
• You will be able to interact with a tutor and peers by means of a Q&A Forum.
This forum will give you the chance to ask your tutor and peers questions
and to answer the questions of your peers.
• The platform also allows you to contact your tutor privately (on personal
matters) through a built-in email system.
• You will upload your assignments to AprendeU, and you will receive grades
and feedback through the platform as well.
• The four quizzes you have to take in this course will be done through the
platform. They will be timed and you will have the possibility of taking each
one only once.
• Likewise, you will have access to support material and extra practices, which
will increase your understanding of the subject matter.
• Finally, you will take the Comprehensive Exam in AprendeU.
It is strongly advised that you access the AprendeU component as soon as the
course starts on February 6th so that you become familiar with this tool and the
tasks that you have to do. You are expected to log in at least three times a
week to carry out the activities and to submit your assignments on time. This
platform provides an excellent opportunity for you to receive personalized
attention and to increase your exposure to the language, which will help you to
improve. We highly recommend that you take advantage of this tool.
To use this online service, you must have access to the Internet and an e-mail
address1. Once you enroll in the course, you will be automatically registered to
AprendeU since it is a mandatory component of the course. For more information
about AprendeU, please read the last pages of these guidelines.
1
Make sure your e-mail address is correct in our database. Otherwise, you will not receive the
information we send you. To verify the information in our database, please go to your University
Center or change it from “Entorno de Estudiantes” on our webpage.

Online Quizzes
These are four short evaluations intended to test the material assigned for each
of the four workshops. All of them will be applied through AprendeU. It is strongly
recommended that you do the mock quizzes in AprendeU before attempting the
graded ones to make sure that you have all the necessary software and to
become familiar with how online quizzes work. Please notice that mock quizzes
are additional practices that help you get acquainted with the format of the
graded quizzes. However, the level of difficulty and types of exercises might be
different from those of the graded quizzes. For the specific dates of the quizzes,
refer to section 7.1 of this document.
Written Assignments
• The submitted assignment should have a cover page including your name,
group, university center, your tutor’s name, and the date.
• Your text must be double-spaced and typed in Arial font 12 point.
• Submit Word documents only.
• Note that even if you are requested to use specific structures in the written
assignments, your grade will not only take into account your use of
those specific structures but also your overall use of grammar
according to the level of the course.
• Check the grading criteria at the end of this document (section 12.1) to
verify what your grade will be based on.
• Upload your assignments to the online component on the corresponding
dates.
• When you upload any document, please use this format for the name of
the file:

Class Participation
This aspect is meant to evaluate essential elements that anyone who wishes to
be successful in the process of learning English at UNED needs to follow. Aspects
such as attendance to workshops, class interaction, your preparation for the
workshops, and the use of English during the sessions are part of class
participation. These aspects will be evaluated in each workshop, which leaves
room for improvement in subsequent sessions. Each workshop is worth 0.25, for
a total of 1, which is the total score for this feature. Not attending a workshop
would mean losing the grade corresponding to that workshop. Refer to section
12.1 to read the rubric that will be used to evaluate class participation.

SUGGESTIONS TO STUDY
• Dedicate at least twelve hours to study per week.
• Read the material thoroughly, do the exercises assigned in the book. Be sure
to use the answer key to check the exercises you do in the book. Make
summaries, do research in other books, and find complementary materials
that can provide you with extra practice.
• Go to AprendeU for extra practice as well.
• The book provides a variety of appendices with essential information about
the units, so be sure to study them.
• Write a list of questions or aspects you would like to ask your tutor and do
so through AprendeU or in the workshop.
• Practice actively and proactively in the workshops.
• If possible, work with other students to review the exercises and practice.
16
____________________________________________________________
Do not be content with the material in the book and with the practice you get
in the tutorials. Always try to look for extra materials and additional chances
to practice your English.
