Motivation describes the process that affects a person's behavior and actions. For example,
a person needs motivation to achieve weight loss.
Describe two motivation theories (2 points)
1. Theory of equity: The theory of equity is proposed by John Stacey Adams a
psychologist, it was derived from the idea that people are motivated by fairness. The
theory states that if a person finds an inequity or a difference between themselves
and a person, they try to delete the inequity and adjust their actions according to it.
2. Alderfer’s ERG theory: Alderfer’s ERG theory was proposed with the inspiration
of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. It states that humans have three types of needs
called existence, relatedness, and growth.
Existence: Existence is related to physical and physiological survival like food, sleep,
and home.
Relatedness: Relatedness deals with the social activities of people like love and
making new friends.
Growth: Growth deals with personal development like securing employment and
getting promoted.
Explain how motivation can influence a team’s success (2 points)
Motivation is the driving force for a team's success. Motivation can improve employee
productivity and helps in finishing tasks and brings more profits, whereas decreased
motivation can lead to poor performance of the employees and a decline in productivity.
Based on the Virgin Media case, how effective are Virgin Media’s policies and procedures
in motivating its staff? Explain your reasoning. (5 points)
Virgin Media is an organization where the achievements of employees are really appreciated.
One of their methods to appreciate its employees is the NPS hero championship where the
employee receives a personal appreciation letter for their outstanding service to the company.
