DNA Fingerprinting Forensic Investigation

The document describes a biology lesson on DNA fingerprinting that requires students to use DNA evidence to solve a fictional crime. The objectives are to define protein synthesis, explain how it works, and use DNA fingerprinting steps to identify a murderer. Students must analyze DNA fragments from crime scene evidence and four suspects, translate the DNA into mRNA and amino acid sequences, and match the sequences to traits to identify the killer. By following the steps and matching the DNA evidence to one of the suspects, the students' investigation found Leonora to be the murderer.

DNA
FINGERPRINTING
___________________________________________________________

By Group 1 STEM C

OBJECTIVES:
1. Define the Protein synthesis in terms of operations.
2. Explain how Protein synthesis works.
3. Use DNA fingerprinting to solve a crime using the steps of protein synthesis.
4. Recognize the significance of DNA fingerprinting in forensics and other fields

PROCEDURE:
1. Read and analyze the complication of the story.
2. Operate the investigation using transcription and translation process in protein synthesis
3. Read some information about the suspects specimen that are collected from them.
2

4. Decode the DNA until you find the right mRNA codon and tRNA anticodon sequences.
5. Refer the mRNA codon in genetic code to obtain the correct amino acid sequences.
6. Look for table 2 to match the amino acid sequence with the traits.
7. Check the traits you get in table 2 to figure out who the killer is.
8. Make a cartographic sketch of the murderer base on your observations and gathered
traits on bond paper.

WHO’S THE KILLER

You are part of the of the forensic scientist investigation team and you’re collecting some
data on the crime scene to investigate the death of Mrs. Katarina, a loving and caring
mother who is willing to sacrifice her life for her daughter and son, but suddenly Mrs.
Katarina died of a stab wound. The police officers say that there are four suspects, Zed
the stepdad, Leonora the older daughter, the middle sister is Theresa, and Darius the
youngest son.
Zed is a loving and caring husband and father to his children even though he is not a
biological father, Leonora is the older of the siblings, hardworking and helps the family.
Then the second child is good at academics but sometimes she’s having arguments with
her mom. Then the youngest son, Darius, was a kind person. After the death of their
mother Leonora and Theresa had an argument and taught who was responsible for the
incident. The police submitted all of the evidence specimen in the crime scene and from
the four suspects, your job is to give ID of the killer by the drawing traits based on the
information you’ve collected in the DNA, for every DNA fragment for each gene, get the
mRNA codon, tRNA anticodon and amino acid sequence. Refer to table 1 to decipher the
amino acids and table 2 to obtain the trait corresponding to the amino acid sequence.

Always remember that we’re doing this to mean the conviction of the real killer or the
conviction of the innocent.

was collected from them.

Below are the DNA fragments obtained from the sample specimens left by the killer at the
crime scene and match in the one on the family? It’s Zed, Leonora, Theresa and Darius based on
the sample specimen that was collected by the police, would they match?
