CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study:

Work Immersion is a component of the Senior High School (SHS) curriculum that entails

80 hours of practical experience or job simulation for students in Grade 11 and 12. (Cruz,2015).

It is for the learners to gain work ethics and values necessary for continuing their education or

entering the workforce by exposing them to the real workplace environment. The topic WRRC,

which stands for “Work Immersion”/ Research/ Career Advocacy/ Culminating Activity,” has four

possibilities. There are three key learning areas in this subject: Pre-Immersion, Immersion

proper, and Post-Immersion. Our teachers, especially school administrator, ran a 20-hour Pre-

Immersion Orientation over the course of five days. According to (Alberto 2021), Work

Immersion is comparable to the on-the-job will be given many chores to complete as an actual

employee in this encounter. Not only will you gain new talents, but more importantly, you’ll

develop new social skills. You must work along with your co workers and adjust to the new

surroundings. In brief, it will allow you experience what a real job feels like. Additionally, this is

a very vital prerequisite for every graduating student in senior high. Thus, anticipate to go

through a challenging and enjoyable phase of your life. The DHA (Doctorare in Health

Administration) curriculum’s “work immersion” component, which involves practical application

of student’s learned skills and information related to their track, is a major component. Students

are exposed to and familiarized with the workplace linked to their area of specialty through

work immersion. The work immersion is a component of the DHA Curriculum that entails 80

hours of practical training that the students must complete in order to expose them to the real

workplace environment and enhance the competencies the school offers. (Leah, A. 2021).

This study will be using DepEd order No. 30 S. 2017, Guidelines in the Implementing
Work Immersion. According to Department of Education Order No. 30 s. 2017, one of the goals
of the K to 12 Basic Education program is to develop in learners the competencies, work ethics
and values relevant to pursuing further education and or joining the world of work. In order
that the nations development target will be realized and to achieve greater congruence with the
basic education, work immersion is a required subject that has been incorporated in the
curriculum.

Under Annex A of Work immersion Curriculum Guide, it was emphasized that through
work immersion, students are exposed to and become familiar with work related environment
related to their field of specialization to enhance their competence. This is for the
purpose that .the students can relate directly to their postsecondary goal.

On the other hand, Experiential Learning Theory, defines as the process where by
knowledge is created through the transportation of experience. Knowledge results from the
combination of grasping and transforming experience (Kolb, 1984, p. 451.) Learning is best
facilitated by a process the at draws out the learners’ beliefs and ideas about a topic so that
they can be examined, tested and integrated with new, more refined ideas. Piaget called this
proposition constructivism-individuals construct their knowledge of the world based on their
experience.

Learning is not just the result of cognition but involves the integrated functioning of
total person-thinking, feeling, perceiving and behaving. It compasses other specialized models
of adaptation from the scientific method to problems solving, decision making and creativity. In
Piaget’s terms, learning occurs through equilibrium of dialectic process of assimilating new
experiences into existing concepts and accommodating existing concepts of new experience.

According to Cruz 2015, it is expected that students after immersion who will go to

higher education must possess the CGED College Readiness Standards. It is combination of
knowledge ,competencies and reflective thinking necessary for K to 12 graduates to participate
and succeed without remediation in entry level undergraduate courses in higher education.
Statement of the problem:

This qualitative study aimed to determine the experience of grade 12 in there work

immersion. Specially, it will seek to answer the following question;

1. What are your experiences in the work immersion?

2. What are the challenges faced by Grade 12 students in their training?

3. What is their level of knowledge about the work immersion program?

4. What is the importance of work immersion for every senior high school students

Scope and the limitation:

The study, titled "Beyond The Classroom: The Lived Experiences of Grade 12 in their
Work Immersion," will be carried out by the researchers. San Pedro Apartado National High
School will host it. The choice of the aforementioned school was primarily influenced by the
researchers' proximity to it. The pupils in Grade 12 during the academic year of 2018–2019 will
be the subject of this study. Some of the respondents were unable to respond to the self-made
questionnaire because they were unavailable on the day that the data collection was carried
out. The data will be collected using a self-made questionnaire about the level of significance of
work immersion that will be answered by the Grade 12 students of San Pedro Apartado National
High School.

Significant of the Study:

1. To the students – this study will be very helpful to know the importance of each strand to be

taken and to expand the importance of the strand you want.

2. Parents or Guardians – they will fully understand the importance of possessing the work

immersion.
3. To the school administrators: the result of the study can serve as a guide to the school

administrators to determine program that will be taken to support the grade 12 students.

The Work Immersion program facilitates the integration of Experiential Learning Theory by providing students with structured opportunities to engage in real-world tasks that are directly related to their academic studies . This approach encourages students to grasp and transform their experiences into practical knowledge, aligning with Kolb's concept of experiential learning as knowledge creation through experience . By allowing students to apply classroom theory to practical situations, work immersion bridges the gap between education and practice, thereby facilitating a more holistic learning approach that encompasses thinking, feeling, perceiving, and behaving .

The Work Immersion component contributes significantly to curriculum enhancement by integrating practical experience with theoretical knowledge, thereby bridging the gap between classroom education and real-world application . This integration allows for the development of curricula that are more aligned with industry needs and student interest, ensuring relevance and applicability in diverse workplaces . By including work immersion, the curriculum not only meets educational goals but also prepares students with the skills and competencies required by higher education institutions and future employers, promoting a holistic development approach .

The Work Immersion component in the Senior High School curriculum contributes to student readiness by enabling them to gain practical, real-world experience that enhances their work ethics and values, which are essential for both further education and workforce entry . Experiential learning theory supports this by asserting that knowledge is created through the transformation of experience, combining grasping and transforming experiences . Thus, students can integrate theoretical knowledge from their education with practical skills and social competencies necessary for real-world environments, thereby better preparing them for future challenges in both education and employment .

Constructivism, as proposed by Piaget, suggests that individuals construct knowledge based on their own experiences . In the context of the Work Immersion program, this is evident as students actively engage in real-world tasks that require them to reflect on and apply their classroom knowledge in new settings . This active engagement allows students to assimilate and accommodate new experiences into their existing knowledge base, thus fostering a deeper understanding and skill set . The impact on students' learning experiences is significant as it promotes autonomy in learning, encourages critical thinking, and enhances their ability to adapt to various workplace challenges .

The Work Immersion program aligns with the Commission On Higher Education College Readiness Standards by ensuring that students develop a combination of knowledge, competencies, and reflective thinking necessary for participating and succeeding in entry-level undergraduate courses . The experiential learning component of Work Immersion facilitates the practical application of skills learned in the classroom, thereby enhancing the competencies expected at the college level . This hands-on experience enables students to relate directly to their postsecondary goals and fosters readiness for higher education without the need for remedial courses .

The Work Immersion subject addresses the postsecondary goals of students by providing them with relevant experience in environments directly linked to their field of specialization . This exposure allows students to gain practical insights and skills, thereby influencing their career decisions by aligning their academic preparation with the requirements and realities of their chosen career paths . Work Immersion helps students make informed decisions about their future, as they interact directly with industry professionals and understand the demands and opportunities within different careers, ultimately enhancing their preparedness for postsecondary education and career ventures .

Parents and guardians play a crucial role in enhancing the effectiveness of the Work Immersion program by understanding its importance and supporting their children throughout the process . Their involvement can include providing emotional support, encouraging their children to engage fully with the program's tasks, and helping them reflect on their experiences to draw out learning and growth . Moreover, when parents comprehend the program's value, they can better guide and motivate their children towards succeeding in their chosen strands, thereby aligning educational goals with the competencies acquired during work immersion .

School administrators benefit from implementing the Work Immersion program as it provides actionable data and insights about student preparedness and areas needing improvement, aiding in curriculum and teaching strategy enhancement . The program's results can inform school policies by highlighting the importance of aligning education with industry standards, leading to more effective partnerships with businesses and institutions . Additionally, understanding the specific needs and competencies developed through work immersion can influence strategic planning, encouraging schools to adapt and refine their educational offerings for better student outcomes and improved school performance .

Grade 12 students potentially face challenges such as adjusting to a new work environment, handling the responsibilities akin to that of an actual employee, and developing the necessary social skills to collaborate with coworkers . These challenges can impact learning outcomes by either enhancing students' adaptability and problem-solving skills or, conversely, overwhelming them, which might hinder their ability to fully benefit from the immersion experience . Addressing these challenges effectively requires support from educators and a structured approach to integrating classroom learning with practical tasks .

DepEd Order No. 30 S. 2017 provides a structured framework for the implementation of work immersion programs, emphasizing its importance in aligning the K-12 educational system with national development goals . The order mandates the development of competencies, work ethics, and values essential for the seamless transition of students into higher education or the workforce. By establishing guidelines, it ensures that schools incorporate experiential learning that exposes students to real-world environments related to their specialization . This directive has standardized the delivery of work immersion, fostering consistency in its execution across schools while promoting curriculum enhancement .
