B. Motivation
Group Activity: 4-pics-one word
-I will group you into 5.
Please count by 5 like 5,10,15,20,25 starting
from the left side to the right.
Group number 1 you sit here in right-
front. All group 2 will sit here in the right-
left side. For group 3 your place is behind
group 1. And for group 4, you sit at the
back of group 2. For group 5, you sit at
the very back of the first groups. Move in
ten counts silently. Is it clear?
Start! 1............10!
Now, in this activity, I will present 4 pictures
and you need to guess the one word they have
in common.
-You are going to identify the word that
corresponds to your photo by filling the
blanks with the missing letters. You will only
be given 30seconds to guess the word.
If one member of the group knows the answer,
just say your group name and wait until I
acknowledge you before you tell the answer.
At the end of this activity, the winner will
receive +5points in recitation, the 2nd will
receive 3 points while 3rd will have 1point.
Is that clear?
-Are there any question?
(The pictures will be presented)
1-I_ t_ _a _e
2- _as _a_
3- C_ _ _ult_ _ _ _e
4- _o _m _l
5- F_ _ _ _ n
- Congratulations to all of the
groups for a job well done.
C. Discussion
How do you find the activity? Was it difficult?
Was it fun?
-Given all the hints in that activity, what do
you think is our topic for today?
Alright, you all have a point. Our topic today
is related to the terms that you had formed a
moment ago. So, what do you think are these
words called (intimate, casual, consultative,
formal, and frozen)? Anyone? Who can
guess?
Very good!
Our lesson for today is about types of speech
style. In this lesson we will be dealing with the
following objectives:
distinguish types of speech style;
relate the different speech styles to
specific situation; and
appreciate the lesson through role-
playing the different types of speech
styles.
-On your own word, what is speech style?
-Very good, you have a great idea!
According to Martin Joos, Speech style
means the form of language that the
speaker uses for a specific context. These
speech styles have five types. These are
intimate, casual, consultative, formal, and
frozen.
Do you now understand what speech style is?
Very Good! Now let us tackle its five types.
What comes into your mind when you hear the
word intimate?
Excellent!
Intimate-This is the speech style that is
reserved for people who have a really close
connection. It is casual and relaxed and goes
beyond words as it incorporates nonverbal
communication and even personal language
codes.
Example: conversation between lovers
Ask for more example
Any questions about intimate? None?
Ok, let’s proceed.
Our next type of speech style is casual.
Who has an idea about casual? None?
Ok, can I have Ms.? Kindly read
the definition of casual and share your
understanding about it.
Casual- This style is characterized by its
casualty, with a flexible and informal
vocabulary that may include slang. It’s usually
unplanned, pretty relaxed, and reliant on the
fluid back and forth between those involved.
Example: chats with friends and family
Ask for more examples
Is casual clear to you?
Good. Let’s proceed to the next type.
Who can read the definition of consultative
and give his/her insight?
Anyone?
Yes, you are raising your hand.
Consultative- is used in semi-formal
communication. It happens in two-way
participation, and the speaker does not usually
plan what he wants to say.
Examples: conversation between teachers and
students, doctors and patients
Ask for more examples.
Is consultative clear to you?
Are you sure?
Very Good. Let’s jump to the next speech
style.
Any volunteer to read the definition of formal
and explain what you had read?
Yes, please!
Formal-It is a speech style that is only used
for imparting information. This is a well-
organized speech and observes correct
grammar and diction. Technical
vocabulary and exact definitions are
important in this style.
Examples: meetings (corporate or other formal
meetings), court sessions, etc…
Ask for more examples.
Any questions about formal?
Ok. Let’s have the last type of speech style.
Who can read and explain?
Kindly read, please.
Frozen- is characterized by the use of
certain grammar and vocabulary particular
to a certain field. The language in this
speech style is very formal and static,
making it one of the highest forms of
speech styles. It’s usually done in a format
where the speaker talks and the audience
listens without actually being given the space
to respond.
Examples: a Presidential speech, a school
creed, etc…
Ask students for more examples.
Any questions about frozen?
Any questions about the five speech styles?
Excellent! I assume that you understand
our topic today, and very ready to have
our next activity.
Are you ready?
D. Application
With the same group, create a 1-minute role
play portraying your assigned speech style.
Group 1- Intimate Speech Style
Group 2- Casual Speech Style
Group 3- Consultative Speech Style
Group 4- Formal Speech Style

-You will be given 5 minutes to prepare and 1

You will be graded according to this rubric

After 5 minutes…..
Now, let us have your role play presentation.
Good job, class. You did well today. I am so
glad with your performance. Around of
applause for yourselves!
