Preparatory Steps
This document describes the installation of Solaris 8 by means of an image. It encompasses not
only the installation itself but also the configurational steps required in the operating system once
it is installed.
If the computer on which Solaris 8 is to be installed is equipped with a monitor and a keyboard
(desktop system), these will be used to carry out the installation. For computers mounted in racks
(that is, without monitors or keyboards), a laptop with a serial interface and a Terminal Emulation
Program must be provided to carry out the installation.
In the event that the installation computer possesses a System Controller (which is the case, for
example, in the Sun Fire V240), accessing the UNIX console will be possible only by using this
System Controller. To do so, connect a laptop to the serial port or network port of the System
Controller (SC) and start a Terminal Emulation Program. Prior to its initial use, however, the net-
work port of the SC must be assigned an IP address.
❑ Desktop systems
• UNIX prompt (CDE login, console login, shell prompt)
• ok prompt (OpenBootPROM prompt)
The installation must always be started from within the OpenBootPROM (OBP) ok prompt. For
initial installations and upgrades, the steps to be carried out differ for desktop systems and rack-
mounted systems.
❑ Upgrade
For upgrade installations, log in to the console as user root and enter "init 0" to reach the ok
prompt.

Installing Solaris 8 from DVD-ROM
Please enter a host name, which identifies this system on the network.
The name must be unique within the domain in which it resides; creating
a duplicate host name will cause problems on the network after you in-
stall Solaris.
"<hostname>" is an arbitrary combination of letters, digits, and the "-" characters. However, the
hostname must begin with a letter. It is recommended that the hostname be limited to eight char-
acters.
Please enter the Internet Protocol (IP) Address for this system. It must
be unique and follow your site's address conventions, or a system/network
failure could result.
Specify whether or not IPv6, the next generation Internet Protocol, will
be enabled on this machine. Enabling IPv6 will have no effect if this
machine is not on a network that provides IPv6 service. IPv4 service will
not be affected if IPv6 is enabled.
The default route provides a bridge between two physical networks that
forwards traffic between the networks.
You must specify how to set the default route. You can let the software
try to find oone or you can specify one. The software can find a default
route only if the system is on a network that has a route that broadcasts
itself.
1. Find one
2. Specify one
You must enter the IP address of the default route. IP Addresses must
contain four sets of numbers separated by periods (example 128.87.42.1).

For installations via a graphical user interface or for configurational settings on rack-mounted
systems (which possess neither keyboard nor monitor), a Windows laptop and the X11 emulator
named "XVision" can be used. In this case, the following configurational settings are recom-
mended under Solaris.
❑ Activate the font server, otherwise, the following error message will be displayed:
Font path element ’tcp/172.28.30.132:7100’ cannot be specified.

Introduction The software required for installation is contained on the different installation media (this is the
case since the Solaris Platform version "S3").
Under Solaris, the OSI Stack is licensed. An appropriate SUN license is required to operate the
OSI Stack. The OSI Stack is managed by a specific license server. This license server can either
be the local host or a redundancy approach encompassing three servers; these servers can then
provide licenses to an entire network. The license servers can be updated so that any given license
must only be entered in one of the servers. As a consequence, when starting the OSI Stack, the
system will query the valid license from one of the license servers.
Installation
Insert the installation DVD in the drive and wait until it was mounted automatically. To install
the software, enter the following command:
# pkgadd -d /cdrom/cdrom0/s0/Solaris_8/AddOns/OSI/Packages
This starts the installation program. The following is displayed in the Terminal:
If a license server is to be installed on the local host, all packages can be selected. If no local
license server is to be installed, the packages named SUNWlicsw and SUNWlit must be
excluded from the selection.
For local test installations or smaller networks, it is recommended that the license server be
installed locally.
To proceed with all packages selected, simply press "Return". During the installation, user inter-
action is required several times: simply select the default value or "y".
Once the installation is complete, the first dialog (selection of packages) is again displayed; enter
"q" to quit the program.

Patch Installation
The DVD-ROM provides a patch for the OSI Stack; the patch must be installed to ensure a cor-
rect operation.
# cd /cdrom/cdrom0/s0/Solaris_8/AddOns/OSI/Patches
# patchadd 111344-14
For OSI, usually a separate network interface is used which is not yet used otherwise. To do so,
the following information must be provided:
# init 6
21

License
The license for the OSI Stack must be activated separately for each computer (accomplished
through SUN). To do so, a license certificate is issued when purchasing the Sunlink (OSI) soft-
ware. This license certificate contains a serial number which must be provided when requesting
the proper license. Information which must also be provided: customer address, host name, and
host ID. The host ID can be obtained by using the "hostid" command. Requesting the license is
also possible via the Internet. The easiest way to enter the license is by using a specific tool. The
tool is started as user root by entering:
# /etc/opt/licenses/lit
In the appearing dialog window, enter the product to be licensed and the appropriate password.
The following picture displays the window with correct entries (entries serve as examples only):

/var/tmp/licenses.log
In the event that an incorrect license was accidentally created, the following steps must be carried
out prior to restarting the license tool.
# cd /etc/opt/licenses
# rm licenses_combined
# rm osistk9.0.lic*
# init 6
The access rights for the /var/tmp/locklic.SUNW file should be checked and corrected, if
required.
# cd /var/tmp
# ls -l locklic.SUNW
-rw-r--r-- 1 nobody nobody 0 Apr 14 11:54 locklic.SUNW
If the /var/tmp/locklic.SUNW file does not belong to the user/group named "nobody", execute
the following command:
# cd /etc/init.d
# /usr/dt/bin/dtpad osinet
CLNSTPI=clnstpi
ulimit -n 1024
To activate the OSI Stack, the computer must again be rebooted with the following command:
# init 6
24
Configurational Settings
To configure the OSI Stack, the OSI Daemon must be running. This can be verified by using the
following command:
# pgrep osinetd
If the Daemon is running, its process ID will be displayed. The ID will not be displayed if the
Daemon is not active.
To configure the OSI Stack, a tool is available which carries out the configuration automatically.
Effective with version S6, it is located in:
/opt/install-tools/otsconfig
For the tool to operate correctly, the DISPLAY variable must be set.
❑ -t 0|1
This parameter is used to specify the type of network elements that are connected to the OSI
Stack. "0" signifies that only former Bosch network elements (for example, MS1/4, ONU)
are operated with the OSI Stack. "1" signifies that also more recent network elements are
used (for example, SMA). It is recommended that always the value "1" be used.
❑ -i <IP address>
This IP address is used as a part of the NSAP address (then in hex-notation). If the IP address
is not entered, is will be distinguished by the previously specified LAN interface and used
accordingly. However, if no LAN interface is entered, the first one found will be used. In
summary, the NSAP address consists of the following parts:
• 1. part
39000080000000000000000000
• 2. part This is the IP address in hexadecimal code (for example, 172.28.67.4 results in
AC 1C 43 04).
AC1C4304
• 3. part
0000 01
❑ -I <LAN interface>
This parameter is used to specify the LAN interface which is to carry the OSI traffic. If no
LAN interface is specified, the IP address will be used to distinguish the LAN interface. If
this fails, an appropriate error message will be displayed.
If the parameter values are entered correctly, the OSI Stack will be configured automatically and
restarted so that the settings take effect immediately.
We recommend that the automatic configuration always be used and that, if required, this con-
figuration be adapted to specific customer requirements afterwards. Often, only the NSAP must
be adapted afterwards, for example. How this is effected is described in the following chapter.
25
Configurational Settings
3
To operate the OSI Stack, parameters such as the NSAP must be specified. Under SUN, this is
effected by means of a graphical user interface. This GUI is started by means of the following
command:
# /opt/SUNWconn/osinet/bin/ositool
The following GUI is displayed; it facilitates the configuration of all required OSI parameter val-
ues.
If the window is not displayed, the OSI Daemon is not active. In this case, license issues may
prevent the OSI Daemon from starting.
OSI address
To specify the OSI addresses, invoke the "Network Layer Addresses" command. A secondary
window is displayed in which the addresses can be specified. As a first step, in the upper window
section, select the "CNLP" type and select the "free-form" option for "NSAP Family". Now enter
the NSAP address for the workstation in question.
For ONU, MSV5, MS1/4, the OSI address can be entered according to the definitions below
(applicable only if no specific network design is present). The OSI address consists of three parts:
❑ 1. part
39000080000000000000000000
❑ 2. part. This is the IP address in hexadecimal code (for example, 172.28.67.4 results in AC
1C 43 04).
AC1C4304
❑ 3. part
0000 01
If a specific network design was applied, the address assigned to the workstation for this must be
used. The following picture displays a sample configuration.
26
Configurational Settings
Subsequently, the NET address must be specified. As a first step, in the upper window section,
select "NET" and select the "free-form" option for "NSAP Family". This address is identical to
the CNLP address except for the last digit. The NET address must be "0" for the last digit. The
settings depicted below are the result.
To adopt the addresses, press the "Apply" action button. Close the window.
To activate the new addresses, restart the OSI Daemon. This is carried out in the main window:
27
Configurational Settings
3
To specify the parameter values, select the "Stack Manager" command in the main window. A
secondary window is displayed in which a number of parameter values can be specified. The fol-
lowing picture displays the setting when using the OSI Stack in conjunction with a mixed net-
work, that is, devices of the SMA or OMS series are present in the network.
Only the settings in the "Transport & CNLS" window section are relevant (selected in the upper
window section). Confirm the settings by invoking "Apply". Under "Advanced Options", addi-
tional options must be adapted as shown in the picture below.
In the event that "old" Bosch technology is used exclusively (that is, ONU, MSV5, MS14, etc.),
slightly different parameter values must be used. The picture below displays the settings required
for the devices mentioned above. All other parameter values are set identically.
28
Configurational Settings
Once these settings are accomplished, the resources must be specified. To do so, select the
"Resources" option for the "Configuration" action. The window depicted below appears; in the
"Transport & CLNS" section, effect the following settings:
Once the settings were confirmed by clicking "Apply", return to the main window.
29
Configurational Settings
3
ES-IS Configuration
To specify the routing parameter values, select the "ES-IS Configuration" option in the main win-
dow. Specify the values in question as depicted in the illustration below.
In this context, the settings for the LLC subnet are relevant; it must first be selected in the upper
window section. Again, the settings must be confirmed by clicking "Apply".
To activate the new settings, restart the OSI Daemon. To do so, in the main window, select the
"Restart osinetd" option for the "Command" action. All settings are complete, the windows can
be closed.
