PART A: RESEARCH ON CSR AND SDG

1.1 Corporate Social Responsibility

Figure 1. Sustainable Development Goals

Corporate Social Responsibility or CSR encourages businesses to incorporate social and

environmental considerations into their daily operations and relationships with stakeholders.
CSR refers to a company's efforts to balance its commitments to economic, environmental, and
social goals while also meeting stakeholder and shareholder expectations (sometimes known as
the "Triple-Bottom-Line Approach"). In this regard, it's critical to make a distinction between
CSR, which can be a notion for strategic company management, and philanthropy, sponsorships,
or charitable giving. Even if the latter can also significantly reduce poverty and will directly
improve a company's reputation and brand, the concept of CSR unquestionably extends beyond
those things.

As in our course, Engineers in Society (MEC600), we have learned about CSR and how
crucial engineers are to the advancement of society in the contemporary day. They are necessary
for society's ability to advance and develop smoothly. Engineers need to be flexible and
conscious of their place in society. Everyone taking the Engineer in Society course is required to
participate in CSR as part of their education in order to have a better idea of how engineering
1
students should act when they graduate and enter society since we have introduced about the
CSR in our topic MEC600. All cooperative players are required to contribute to and participate
in CSR as a good reaction to society. CSR programs are significant initiatives that are
implemented all around Malaysia. Each has a distinct contributing goal. CSR is a method by
which companies interact with society. Corporate involvement in society will help businesses
better grasp how society functions in relation to them. As a result, engage with society to forge a
connection. CSR initiatives could have a wide range of effects. For instance, culture may be
enhanced by developing a positive corporate culture, and health may be enhanced, among other
things, by supporting a healthy lifestyle.

Other than that, Service-Learning Malaysia-University for Society, commonly known

as SULAM, is a cutting-edge educational approach that incorporates significant, organised, and
graded community service. Since 2019, SULAM has been formally adopted as a pedagogy in all
public higher education institutions, and it is currently promoted in all private institutions. In the
MEC600 subject we were instructed to hold SULAM program as it is part of our curriculum.
This because SULAM has a lot of benefits to the students for example, it can improve leadership
skills among university students. Next, SULAM can improve student’s ability to apply material
they learn in class to real problems. Lastly, it can make a deeper understanding of the complexity
of social issues.

1.2 United Nation Sustainable Development Goals

The General Assembly endorsed the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which
consists of 17 Sustainable Development Goals, in September 2015. (SDGs). The new Agenda
emphasizes a holistic approach to attaining sustainable development for all, building on the idea
of "leaving no one behind." Eleven times in the SDGs, disability and people with disabilities are
explicitly mentioned. The SDGs include mention to disability in a number of areas, including
those dealing with inequality, human settlement accessibility, growth and employment,
education, and data collecting and monitoring. Although not all goals specifically mention
"disabled," they are nonetheless important to ensuring the inclusion and development of people
with impairments. An infographic illustrating the 17 SDGs' explicit inclusion of disability for
people with disabilities worldwide, the recently implemented 2030 Agenda for Sustainable

2
Development holds great hope.

Figure 2. 17 of SDGs Categories

The figure above shown that are 17 of SDGs categories. There are only a few CSR program
that are aligned with the SDGs. Table below shows several of SDGs categories that related to
the CSR program:

3
1. Ensuring that all boys and girls receive
primary and secondary education that is
free, equitable, and produces excellent
learning outcomes for Goal 4.

2. To prepare them for primary education,

make sure that all boys and girls have
access to high-quality early childhood
development, care, and education.

3. Make sure that all men and women have

equal access to affordable, high-quality
tertiary education, including university.

4. To support economic growth and human

well-being, create high-quality, dependable,
sustainable, and resilient infrastructure,
including regional and transnational
infrastructure, with an emphasis on
universal access that is both affordable and
fair.

5. Increase the availability of affordable loans

to small-scale industrial and other
businesses, especially those in emerging
nations, and their integration into value
chains and marketplaces.

6. Access to information and communications

technology should be greatly expanded, and
by 2020, all least developed nations should
have ubiquitous, low-cost Internet access.

1.3 CSR Programs in Malaysia
1.3.1 Setting up environmental-friendly corporate policies

Figure 5. Setting up environmental-friendly corporate policies.

Figure above shows one of the CSR activities in Malaysia which is “Setting up
environmental-friendly corporate policies”. One of the best CSR initiatives that would greatly
help business is developing proper corporate policies to safeguard the environment. Reducing the
amount of paper used, placing recycling bins throughout the offices, and switching to LED light
bulbs that use less energy can all assist in lessening the company's costs while also having a
positive influence on the environment.

Business leaders should always be thinking about methods to reduce their carbon
footprints since doing so is one practical approach for companies to conduct ethical operations
that cause the least amount of environmental damage. Many businesses have increased their
efforts to date to make sure that their employees adopt these practices as well. This activity

5
shown that is it related to the SDG 13 which is about boost global adaptability and resistance to
climate-related dangers and natural disasters. This CSR program related to the SDG 7 which it
goals is to ensure that everyone has access to modern, affordable, and dependable energy
services.

1.3.2 Volunteering Activity Yayasan Sime Darby Huluran Kasih Volunteer Program

Figure 6. Yayasan Sime Darby Huluran Kasih

Yayasan Sime Darby (YSD) on Friday, September 20, introduced the "YSD Huluran Kasih"
employee volunteer programme for Sime Darby employees in the spirit of altruism. At the
launch event held at the Sime Darby Convention Center, more than 200 members of the Sime
Darby Plantation Berhad, Sime Darby Property Berhad, and Sime Darby Berhad staff were
present (SDCC). The flagship programme is designed expressly as a platform for volunteerism
for the staff of the three Sime Darby enterprises. It aims to foster the spirit of volunteerism while
raising awareness of the topics the foundation supports. The programme is divided into three
categories: team-based volunteering, skills-based volunteering, and individual volunteering.
These categories include a variety of volunteer initiatives that support causes in all five of the
YSD pillars: education, environment, community & health, sports, and arts & culture. Contrary
to popular misconception, CSR does not always necessitate a significant reduction in your
company's budget. A fantastic method to give back with almost no expense is to volunteer at the
old people's home or soup kitchen in your community. This CSR program has aligned to the
SDG 1 in order to ensure that all men and women, especially the poor and the vulnerable, have

6
equal rights to economic resources, access to essential services, ownership of and control over
real estate and other forms of property, inheritance, access to natural resources, appropriate new
technology, and financial services, including microfinance. Since we volunteer to lead an
Arduino sharing session for students at the Pertubuhan Rumah Anak Yatim/Miskin Penyayang,
this volunteerism program is directly tied to our own program, the "Bengkel Kemahiran Asas
Perisian Arduino." The students learned some new information regarding Arduino during this
sharing session.

1.3.3 Socially and Environmentally Conscious Donations

Figure 7. Star Foundation-Wheelchair Program

Along with the tax deduction benefit already mentioned, networking and forming
relationships with other organizations can be accomplished through charitable contributions. The
company has a chance to make priceless contacts and seize potential future collaboration
opportunities by making a donation to the charity of your choosing.

For example, the CSR program by Star Foundation which they held a Wheelchair
Program. This is a program intended to supply donations and wheelchairs to eligible people and
non-profit organizations (NPOs) that require assistance with mobility. Besides, this program is to
enhance the quality of life for Malaysians who are physically challenged. Its achievements where
the Star's charitable foundation has given 183 wheelchairs and an estimated RM 500k to
deserving people and non-profit organizations so far. This CSR has aligned with SDG 10 which
7
is reduced inequalities. One of its goals is to eliminate discriminatory laws, policies, and
practices, as well as encourage appropriate legislation, policies, and action in this area to ensure
equal opportunity and reduce outcome inequalities. In connection with that, we also gave a small
donation to the students in our program, "Bengkel Kemahiran Asas Perisian Arduino" where we
provide them with some snacks at the end of the session. In certain ways, this might lift their
spirits and show them how much we value their time spent taking part in our program.

1.3.4 Providing academic/research scholarships to disadvantages students

Figure 8. CIMB Asean Scholarship Program

When it comes to assisting a rising scholar, a corporate scholarship program may be the
perfect solution to the company's CSR requirements. Offer university students merit- or need-
based scholarships, and your company will not only be doing good deeds but will also be
fostering and empowering a new generation of talent through educational opportunities.

For example, CIMB Asean Scholarship program is a financial aid that provides additional
professional development and mentor support while covering undergraduate students' tuition,
living expenses, insurance, and other associated costs. The goal is to introduce them to CIMB's

operations and culture while empowering the young talent in the area and helping others in their
community. This CSR program relates to the SDG 4 to ensure that all boys and girls receive
primary and secondary education that is free, equitable, and produces excellent learning
8
outcomes for Goal 4.
1.3.5 Collaborating with relevant NGOs to spearhead a particular initiative

Figure 9. Dell in collaboration with the Lonely Whale Foundation (LWF) – NextWave Plastics

Cooperation with other NGOs is another practical CSR strategy. This entails the sharing
of assets, knowledge, and skills between two or more organizations in order to jointly
accomplish a predetermined goal, like building homes for the less fortunate. Startups and smaller
companies can profit most from a strategic alliance because the combined labor and financial
resources would undoubtedly provide bigger results than the efforts of a single organization.
Overall, companies should encourage collaboration with other organizations because these
alliances often result in the most creative ideas.

For example, Dell in collaboration with the Lonely Whale Foundation is an open-source
initiative that links top IT companies with consumer-oriented enterprises to create an industrial-
scale supply chain for plastics and nylon with an ocean destination. The goal is to encourage
sustainable production and inform companies about ethical sourcing and consumption. This CSR
activities related to the SDG 15 which is it goals is to end poaching and trafficking of protected
flora and animals immediately, and deal with the demand for and supply of illegal wildlife
products.

9
1.4 CSR Programs in Overseas
1.4.1 Renewable Innovation: Johnson & Johnson

Figure 10. Map of Johnson & Johnson Renewables Footprint

Big pharma pioneer Johnson & Johnson is a great illustration of CSR in action. For the
past three decades, they have concentrated on lessening their environmental impact. Their
programs include everything from harnessing wind energy to giving communities all around the
world access to clean water. Through the acquisition of a privately held energy provider in the
Texas Panhandle, the business was able to lessen pollution while offering a cheap, sustainable
alternative to electricity. With the aim of meeting all its energy needs from renewable sources

by 2025, the corporation is still looking into renewable energy solutions. This CSR has aligned
with the SDG 7 which is increasing international cooperation to make clean energy research and
technology, such as renewable energy, energy efficiency, and new, cleaner fossil fuel
technology, more accessible. Also, encourage investment in clean energy infrastructure. In
connection with that, participants in the "Bengkel Kemahiran Asas Perisian Arduino" program
can use this information to make innovation on the products such as RFID systems and
automatic trash cans. If they really get into Arduino, they can use this to develop their expertise
all the way to an international level.

1.4.2 Sustainability – Coca Cola

Figure 11. Sustainability - Coca Cola

Coca-Cola is a company that places a strong emphasis on sustainability. Climate,

packaging, and agriculture are important factors, as well as water conservation and product
quality. Their slogan is "a world without waste," and they work to assure water security by
collecting and recycling every bottle, using packaging that is 100% recyclable, and replacing all
the water used to make their drinks with the environment. They intend to lower their carbon
impact by 25% by the year 2030. Coca-Cola presented its first beverage bottle made entirely of
plastic derived from plants in 2021. "Our objective is to create long-lasting solutions for the
whole industry. We hope additional businesses will join us so we can advance together.
According to Dana Breed, Global R&D Director for Packaging and Sustainability at The Coca-
Cola Company, "We don't regard renewable or recycled material as areas where we desire
competitive advantage. This CSR has aligned with SDG 12 as it is to limit the negative effects on
human health and the environment, achieve the environmentally sound management of
chemicals and all wastes throughout their life cycles, in compliance with accepted international
frameworks, and drastically reduce their release to air, water, and soil. It also ensure that
everyone has access to the necessary knowledge and is aware of sustainable development and
environmentally friendly lifestyles.

11
1.4.3 Workplace Diversity & Inclusion: Starbucks

Figure 12. Starbucks Diversity Hires

Starbucks sought to diversify its personnel and give opportunities to cohorts with an eye
toward hiring. As part of its socially conscious initiatives, it has promised to hire 25,000 US
military veterans and their spouses by 2025. The business accomplished this milestone six
years ahead of expectations and currently recruits 5,000 veterans and spouses each year.

Starbucks established a mentorship program to connect black, indigenous, and people of

color (BIPOC) to top leaders and engage in partnerships to address issues of racial and social
fairness. By 2025, the chain aspires to have 40% BIPOC representation in retail and production,
as well as 30% BIPOC representation in corporate roles. This CSR has aligned with SDG 10
which is reduced inequalities. One of the its goals is to eliminate discriminatory laws, policies,
and practices, as well as encourage appropriate legislation, policies, and action in this area to
ensure equal opportunity and reduce outcome inequalities.

In relation to that, by imparting knowledge of Arduino to participants in the program

"Bengkel Kemahiran Asas Perisian Arduino" they have the chance to link to the field of
electronics if they delve into the knowledge of arduino in detail. Additionally, there is a huge
demand for professionals in the electronics or IT industries today. Race and gender are not
considered in this position. If the knowledge of Arduino is used appropriately, this can offer
huge chances and a successful future.

12
1.4.4 Packaging: LEGO

Figure 13. LEGO Sustainability Commitment

Lego will spend $400 million over the following three years, with an emphasis on
stepping up its sustainability initiatives. As a contemporary super brand, their main objective is
to phase out single-use plastic packaging for its bricks and transition to sustainable packaging
by the year 2025. They will test paper bags in boxes starting in 2021 in collaboration with the
Forest Stewardship Council. Additionally, they are spending money on more eco-friendly goods
that emit no waste and no carbon.

"We must lose sight of the basic difficulties facing future generations," stated Niels B
Christiansen, CEO of the LEGO Group. To protect the environment and the next generation, we
must act quickly. We are motivated by the many youngsters who have urged for more immediate
action on climate change because we are a firm that looks to children as our role models. This
CSR has aligned with SDG 11 which it is refer to sustainable cities and communities. It goals is
to lessen the negative environmental effects of cities per person, especially by paying close
attention to air quality and municipal and other waste management.

13
1.4.5 Employee Rights: Netflix & Spotify

Figure 14. Netflix & Spotify

From a social standpoint, businesses like Netflix and Spotify provide benefits to help
their workers and families. Netflix provides both birth parents and non-birth parents with 52
weeks of paid parental leave (which includes adopted children). This can be taken at any time,
whether it's during the child's first year of life or at another time that works for them. At other
significant tech companies, the median length of employment is 18 weeks.

Similar benefits are available through Spotify, but for only 24 weeks of paid vacation.
The business feels the start of this campaign caused a surge in outside job applications that hasn't
subsided. Netflix and Spotify support social movements including Black Lives Matter, Pride
Month, and environmental sustainability through their social media channels. Netflix serves as
an example of how to effectively use social media to target and appeal to niche and minority
groups. This CSR has aligned with SDG 3 which is good health and well-being. It goals is to
realize universal health coverage for all people, including financial risk protection, access to
high-quality basic medical services, and affordable, accessible, and reliable access to basic
medicines and vaccines.

14
1.5 Impact of CSR

In scope environmental responsibility, the cornerstone of corporate social responsibility,

which is anchored in protecting mother nature, is environmental responsibility. A business can
guarantee that it leaves the environment better off than it found it by conducting its activities as
efficiently as possible and supporting relevant causes. Environmental stewardship is frequently
pursued by businesses through:

1. Reducing waste, emissions, consumption of natural resources, and pollution through its
production process.

2. In all aspects of its operations, including customer outreach, it recycles products and
materials.

3. Establishing product lines that strengthen these principles. A company that sells gas
lawnmowers, for instance, might create an electric version.

4. Choosing methods of distribution with minimal negative effects on emissions and

pollution.

5. Compensating for negative effects by restoring natural resources or lending support to

organizations that can help reduce the company's impact. For instance, a company that
cuts down trees can promise to plant as many or even more.

1.6 Challenges of CSR Activities

The organization handling the CSR operations must be able to tackle the problems that come with
executing the activities. The list of difficulties in conducting CSR activities is shown below:
1. A big budget

Given the large number of tasks we must complete, it is challenging for us to obtain a
significant sum of money quickly. To solve this issue, we must raise money through donations
or obtain sponsorship from any business that is ready to support CSR initiatives.

2. Encourage participation

15
This is one of the biggest obstacles to CSR activities. What kind of participant category will
be included must be selected. For instance, if we want to hold the activity in a school since it is
simple to gather people, we must properly negotiate with the school administration. Dealing
with the school administration is rather difficult, but we can easily get to the participants
target.

3. Choosing suitable date

Since students are our intended audience, we must ensure that the date we have chosen does
not conflict with their weekends or school holidays. As a result, because school pupils are our
primary audience, we must choose a suitable date.

16
PART B: IDENTIFY SOCIAL ISSUE/PROBLEMS/OBJECTIVE & KPI
2.1 Social Issue and Problems
a. PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. STEM education, or STEM
learning, is a program that was created to assist students in acquiring the skills necessary to succeed
in the job market of the twenty-first century. This includes a variety of soft skills, such as critical
thinking, problem solving, teamwork, adaptability, creativity, digital literacy, and others. However,
in Malaysia, this program seems unable to attract high school students, especially in rural areas.
According to recent news in the local press, the interest of school students in STEM fields has been
declining. This issue will have an impact on skilled workers and may even thwart efforts to achieve
the status of a developed country. Although the school tries to attract students by including these
subjects in its syllabus, the students still need a proper means to implement the knowledge they
acquire into daily practice. This concern can at least help them understand the importance and
benefits they will gain from STEM learning.

b. METHOD TO OVERCOME TO PROBLEM

1. Challenges of CSR Activities

Arduino software learning is also a key component used by UiTM's STEM Innovation Volunteer
Club to introduce the STEM and its component to students. This is because Arduino is a
microprocessor which can be used to create a simple technological device with special functions.
Therefore, with Arduino, we have tools that can encourage students to accept and be enthusiastic
in the STEM field. We will create a mini project that has a specific function to be presented to the
audience in the program. The students will also be allowed to create their mini project using
Arduino with the help of our group members.

17
2.2 Objectives

1. Attracting students to STEM field education which aims to spark interest in students,
particularly in rural areas, in pursuing studies in STEM fields. By demonstrating the
practical applications of technology, students can see the benefits of these fields and be
more motivated to pursue them.
2. To give exposure to the students about basic Arduino software and programming by
providing students hands-on experience with the basics of Arduino software and
programming. This can help them to understand the fundamentals of technology and how it
can be used to solve real-world problems.
3. To implement the value of quality education based on the Sustainable Development Goal
(SDG) to rural students as their early preparation for the future and be more competitive
in the global economy.

2.3 KPI of the Program

1. Speakers can share tips, strategies, and techniques to help participants become better
versions of themselves. They can provide advice on topics such as developing strong
communication skills, building relationships, improving physical and mental health, and
becoming financially independent. They can also offer resources and tools to help
participants navigate their lives and careers. Additionally, speakers can motivate
participants to take action and reach their goals. They can inspire and empower them to
make changes and embrace new opportunities.

2. Participants can receive the input that has been delivered and help to spread awareness
about the importance of education and its impact on the overall development of an
individual. They can talk to their friends and family members to encourage them to
pursue education and promote a culture of learning. They can also help to organize events
and campaigns in their local community to promote the importance of education.
Additionally, they can join or start an educational project in their community to help
those in need of access to education. Finally, participants can also volunteer at schools
and other educational institutions to help students learn better.
18
3. Participants will be interested in entering the field of technology and innovation to serve the
community. They will be motivated to develop solutions to global challenges and to use
technology to improve the lives of people all around the world. They will learn how to think
critically and to develop creative solutions. They will also be encouraged to collaborate with
others to create powerful and effective solutions.

19
PART C: SITE VISIT AND COMMUNICATION
3.1 Site Visit

As per mention, we decided to do our Program at Pertubuhan Rumah Anak Yatim /

Miskin Penyayang Sungai Buaya, Banting Selangor. As a result, we chose to make a visit to the
location on November 7th, 2022. We had already made reservations to visit the orphan
organizations via phone calls before we arrived at the orphan organization. When we arrived, we
presented Puan Norlin, who was in charge of managing the orphanage, with a proposal that
detailed the objectives of our program as well as the tentative of our program. We have come up
with the idea of running a face-to-face program that will involve 30 students from a rural junior
high school of Pertubuhan Rumah Anak Yatim / Miskin Penyayang Sungai Buaya.

3.2 Communication Platform

Communication is an important aspect of program management. The government has

loosened restrictions regarding the wearing of face masks in public places, allowing us to
conduct our program face-to-face. Nonetheless, we take precautions by wearing sanitizer. We
communicate with the orphanage organization primarily through phone calls and the WhatsApp
platform. Nevertheless, we have face-to-face meetings, Google Meet, or WhatsApp platform to
update our work progress.

Figure 17. Google Meet Platform Figure 18. WhatsApp Platform

21
On 4,5 and 6th November 2022, Atiqah Haris, as a treasurer, approached permission with Aiszzy
Electronics Enterprise to make a collaboration and also present our program budget planning.

Figure 19. Evidence on approaching collaboration with Aiszzy Electronics Enterprise through WhatsApp Platform.

3.3 Minute of Meeting (MoM)

Meeting minutes are the official record of any meeting. It was used to bring attention to the
most important points of a discussion or an activity. The meeting minutes must include the date
and time of the meeting, the names of those who were there and those who couldn't make it, and
any decisions made about the agenda.

is our main platform. At first, we did some research on the organizations through internet and we
called the organizations numbers that was available there and proposed our project to see if they
are interested in having us to hold the program at their place. As they were interested in our
program, our next step is to have a site visit at their place and discuss more details about the

38
project. As for the meeting between the group members, we conduct it through Google Meet
since every update or any new idea for the project needs to be discuss thoroughly.

4.7 Risk
In handling a program, we will be exposed to any kind of risk that will disturbing our
program. To make sure the event run smoothly, and we achieve our objectives, prevention and
action must be taken.

PART F: IMPLEMENTATION AND MONITORING PLAN
Based on our actual plan, the Basic Training Arduino Software program was decided to take
place on 3rd December 2022. However, due to some situation that does not allow us to held our
program on that date, we change the plan and held the program on 4th December 2022. The date is
chosen since we need to consider school holiday due to our participants that is mostly from
secondary school. The change of date was accepted by the Pertubuhan Rumah Anak Yatim / Miskin
Penyayang Sungai Buaya, Banting, Selangor parties. The program is still on the same venue which
is at Pertubuhan Rumah Anak Yatim / Miskin Penyayang Sungai Buaya, Banting, Selangor and the
tentative of the program is still the same which is from 8:00 a.m until 2:30 p.m. This program was
conducted well and it is welcomed by our participants as they show their interest in our activity.

6.1 Actual time and activities of program

Our SULAM project, which is Basic Training Arduino Software program was held on 4th
December 2022 started from 8:00 a.m until 2:30 p.m. Our trip to Pertubuhan Rumah Anak Yatim /
Miskin Penyayang Sungai Buaya, Banting, Selangor started by all the group members were
47
gathered at Bank Islam UiTM Shah Alam at 5:00 p.m on the 3 rd December 2022. We decided to go
to Banting a day early for us to setup the place to make sure the event on the next day run smoothly.
Since our group consists of 5 members, all of us took the same car to facilitate our trip to Banting.
The trip only took 1 hour from UiTM Shah Alam to the program venue. As we arrived, we setup
the PA System that we will used on the program day. The preparation only took two hours. We
wrap up and return home after dinner which is at 9:00 p.m.

On the 4th December 2022, our group members gathered at Bank Islam UiTM Shah Alam at
6:30 a.m. Since our program start at 8:00 a.m, we started our trip early and we had our breakfast
along way to Banting. We arrived at the venue at 7.30 a.m. Since we had done some preparation a
day before, we only need to setup the venue a little bit more before the participants enter the hall.
Once the preparation was done, the Bengkel Kemahiran Asas Perisian Arduino program continued
according to the tentative.

6.2 Name of sponsorship and other related program organization.

For the sponsorship, we did not have any sponsor for our program since some of the materials
that we used was already available. However, we did some crowdfunding so that we were able
to prepare other unavailable materials.

1. Crowdfunding: Among committee members.

The committee member had collected RM60 each person to prepare the program needs. Overall, we
had collected total of RM300, and the money were used to prepare program materials such as
school souvenirs, participants souvenir and more.

6.5 Actual expenses versus budget.

51
Figure 38: Actual expenses versus budget.

Figure above shows the budget and actual expenses needed for the program in terms of program
needs, transportation and food and beverages. Our budget is to use RM596.40. The amount of
money that we used is RM250.57. We were able to cut RM345.83 from the budget that we had
listed before the program. As we already did crowd funding with the total of RM300.00, we
were also able to save almost RM50.00 from our actual budget.

6.6 Evidence communication with the participants.

Our program can start around 9.00 a.m with 30 lower secondary students from Pertubuhan
Rumah Anak Yatim / Miskin Penyayang, Sungai Buaya Selangor and five semester 7 students of
Bachelor of Engineering (Hons.) Mechanical. Our program has six activities which include ice
breaking session, STEM Education talk, sharing session title “Bengkel Kemahiran Asas Perisian
Arduino '', Hands-on activity, prototype presentation and Q&A session.

1) Activity 1: Ice Breaking Session

First activity was icebreaking. All the members were introduced briefly one by one by Arianna.

52
Figure 39. Ice Breaking Session

2) Activity 2: STEM Education Talk

Next, for the second activity which is STEM Education Talk which is led by Syahmi. The
talk includes basic knowledge of STEM. This is to attract the participants to study in the STEM
field.

Figure 40. STEM Education Talk

3) Activity 3: Sharing Session title “Bengkel Kemahiran Asas Perisian Arduino”

Next is the sharing session title “Bengkel Kemahiran Asas Perisian Arduino”. This sharing
session is to give exposure to the participants on the Arduino software knowledge, introducing
projects that can be produced using Arduino and give exposure to the advantages of Arduino in
everyday life. This title was chosen for the sharing session because our participants are lower
secondary students which they already learnt at their school. This session includes all the team
members which all of us take turns to share and talk.

53
Figure 41. Sharing Session title “Bengkel Kemahiran Asas Perisian Arduino”

4) Activity 4: Hands-On Activities

Next is the hands-on activities with all the participants. We design a simple Arduino project
using TinkerCAD software. By showing the TinkerCAD, we guide the students to connect the
Arduino UNO, LED, resistor to the breadboard using wires. This activity took around 45 minutes,
besides this activity is the most awaited activity because the students are able to learn more about
the Arduino and get to move a lot.

54
Figure 42. Hands-On Activities with participants

5) Activity 5: Prototype Demonstration

The fifth activity is prototype demonstration. We constructed three simple prototypes which are
an automatic dustbin, RFID and smart alarm system. From this demonstration, we explain how the
prototypes work thus the participants can test our project.

Figure 43. Prototypes

55
6) Activity 6: Q&A Session

Finally, there will be a Q&A session. In this session, we provide several questions about the
day's sharing session, which is about Arduino and microcontrollers. The participants also ask us
several questions. At the end of this session, we gather a variety of feedback from participants on
what they learned that day, whether they were satisfied with the activities, and so on.

6.7 Challenge and action taken during the program.

The challenging part of this program is that the participants have a hard time to digest the
information that we present neither about STEM nor about Arduino. It is because this knowledge
was not in the syllabus of some school. Even though some school already have the syllabus in
Information Technology (IT), but it is only general basic knowledge. By this program, we give
them more detail regarding STEM and Arduino since we already learn Arduino during Semester 6
in Applied Electronics and Microprocessor (MEC523) course. By that, they took some time to
accept the knowledge as some of them does not have the basic. Action taken is that we brought our
Arduino project such as RFID System, Smart Dustbin and Smart Alarm System from the previous
semester so that they can see themselves how the Arduino works. During the STEM and Arduino
presentation, we approach the participants that have problem in understanding the presentation and
some of them also have questions regarding STEM and Arduino. We explain to them and also we
ask the presenter to repeat in a way that they can understand clearly. That is how we solve the
problem.
In this program, those are only the challenge that we face as the participants give a good
contribution during our program. All the preparation that we had done was prepared well since we
prepare it according to the checklist to make sure that no materials that were left behind.
In terms of health, due to the COVID-19 disease nowadays, prevention must be taken. During
the program, we practice the SOP by KKM and we were grateful that no participants and team
57
members was infected by this disease as were already practice the SOP before the program also. By
that, the program was held smoothly with only minimum problem.

PART G: COMMUNICATION

7.1 Registration Form

Registration for the program is all done through google form. Although our program is a face-
to-face program, we also ask all the 30 participants to fill in the form. In the google form stated
every requirement needed for the program such as names, their age range and gender. During the
program day which is 4th December 2022, the program started at 8.00 a.m which all the
participants began to enter and fill the hall after they all ate breakfast. Roughly our program is able
to start around 9.00 a.m with 30 lower secondary students from Pertubuhan Rumah Anak Yatim /
Miskin Penyayang, Sungai Buaya Selangor and five semester 7 students of Bachelor of Engineering
(Hons.) Mechanical of UiTM Shah Alam.

7.2 Evidence of Communication with team members

1) Through face-to-face meeting

Figure 61. Evidence meeting on distributing works on the making of slides, prototypes and other activities. (14/11/2022)

After getting approval from HEP, all the team members started to discuss the work to do.
Started to distribute works on the preparation of the slides, hands-on activities with the participants,
prototype presentation and souvenirs for the organization. To minimize cost, we decided to collect
the electrical components such as Arduino UNO, LED, breadboard and many more for hands-on
activity. Besides, after further discussion, we narrow down the prototypes that will be made to three
prototypes. Some of the prototype is reused from the previous mini project to save time and energy.
2) Through Whatsapp Platform

70
Figure 62. Evidence meeting thorough Whatsapp platform regarding on the ideas to make our slides more interesting but full of
knowledge for the lower secondary students. (26/11/2022)

73
Figure 65. Evidence meeting to discuss on the prototypes that fail to operate. (1/12/2022)

74
We need to do a lot of trial and error on the prototypes because they have errors on their
programming and connection. Thus, we also try to minimize cost by reuse the components from our
previous project and try to borrow some of the components from our friends. Figure above shows
the preparation process of the prototypes and wrapping gifts for the participants.

75
Figure 67. Evidence meeting at Pertubuhan Rumah Anak Yatim / Miskin Penyayang Sungai Buaya, Selangor. (3/12/2022)

On December 3, 2022, we arrived in Pertubuhan one day early. When we arrived, we cleaned
the hall and set up all of the tables and chairs to fulfil 30 participants. We also struggle to present
our slides because Pertubuhan Rumah Anak Yatim / Miskin does not have a projector or an LCD
screen in their hall, so we borrow a television from their office to demonstrate them. Finally, we
conducted a brief practice presentation and briefing on the program flow tomorrow.

Figure 68. Postmortem

We performed a post-mortem evaluation at Dataran Cendikia Uitm Shah Alam. During the
postmortem session, we discuss the flaws we discovered during the program day and what we can
do to improve the flaws in the future to create a better program. Finally, we take turns thanking

PART H: ASSESSMENT IMPACT OF THE PROGRAM
This section is an explanation of the feedback we obtained from the program we conducted
with the organization's orphans. They were provided a feedback assessment in the format of a
Google form to evaluate the effectiveness of the program that had been held. To minimize
misunderstanding, we first assist them through each question in the evaluation.

The first evaluation in the assessment is regarding the audience present that day. There were
30 persons in all, 15 guys and 15 girls from secondary school. Their ages vary from 15 to 17. In the
grade concept, there are nine lower secondary pupils and 21 upper secondary students. Initially this
program targeted the junior high school students only, but due to the lack of the required audience,
the orphanage has opened the opportunity for upper secondary school students to participate in this
program to give them exposure to the latest technological developments.

Figure 74 Age percentage of participants

80
Figure 75 Gender percentage of participants

Next is the evaluation of the program being carried out. The average student gave a positive
response to this program because of the objective explained, the content used, the delivery method,
and the appropriate time allocated. The diagrams below show the details of the feedback. However,
there are also a small number of students who are still unclear about the program that has been
carried out.

81
The next evaluation is about the content and also the speakers involved in the delivery of the
program content. Most students chose a range of 4-5, which means they agree and strongly agree
with the content of the program. The most encouraging response was about the two-way
communication between the speaker and the audiences. They were strongly agreed with the way the
speaker conducts the program which prioritizes active response from all the audience.
82
83
The third assessment element is program effectiveness, where we want to know how
beneficial this program is for the participants in their daily life and in the future. Regarding the
topic that was presented, Arduino software, the majority of the audience had rudimentary
knowledge of the subject due to exposure in the school curriculum. The figures below contain
further details about the participants' responses to the effectiveness program.

84
85
The final section addresses the participants' overall satisfaction with the workshop. A total
of 14 participants agreed and another 14 strongly agreed that the program's objectives had been
achieved, while two persons were still unsure. A total of 93.3% of participants were satisfied with
all aspects of the program's management and delivery.

86
All feedback is based on the program that was executed with the orphanage residents. The
feedback collected via this Google evaluation form has been recorded and preserved to aid us in the
analysis and evaluation process for the Community Engagement Impact (Star Rating) Report for the
final report of the program. The form has been attached in an attachment file along with some other
required documents.

PART I: IMPACT OF THE PROGRAMME AND ENGINEERING IDEAS

1. Impact and Sustainable of CSR project:

i. Participants among high school students at Pertubuhan Rumah Anak

Yatim/Miskin Penyayang.

Participants in the "Bengkel Kemahiran Asas Perisian Arduino" program can get a head start on their
exposure to engineering. In relation to that, the program has briefly discussed STEM as well as the Arduino
software. They now know thanks to this program that Arduino can be used to create a variety of product
ideas. Automatic trash cans, smart alarms, and RFID systems are a few of the items that have been shown to
the attendees.

In addition, they can use this information to advance their electronic engineering studies. They may
have the chance to work in the electronics and IT industries as a result. When it comes to entering
international corporations, this line of work offers numerous opportunities that are in line with current global
technological advancements. According to what was observed, this initiative was tied to SDG 4, where
everyone received high-quality education. Plus, this program can help students become more creative
thinkers who can create novel goods utilizing Arduino. This may also reflect the degree of student
cooperation.

87
Figure 76. Hands On Activities

ii. UiTM students: Committee members

As UiTM students and committee members of this program, we feel very fortunate to be
able to hold this SULAM program. This is because it can foster the spirit of cooperation and
leadership among us. In addition, the SULAM program also gave us experience where we had to
deal with an outside party, the Pertubuhan Rumah Anak Yatim/Miskin Penyayang. This can further
increase our contacts and we can learn the procedures that need to be done to run a program.

Apart from that, we as members of the authority can also learn to manage time wisely in
managing this SULAM program. This is because we must use a relatively limited amount of time to
conduct seminars and activities for the participants. In addition, we have introduced to the
participants about technology in this day and age and introduced products that can be innovated
using arduino. This is very much in line with SDG 9 which is to build resilient infrastructure,
promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation.

88
Figure 77: Preparation of the prototype.

2. Improvement related to the engineering activities:

We have the chance to instruct the participants in the Arduino system through the SULAM
program “Bengkel Kemahiran Asas Perisian Arduino”. The participants were able to create a
straightforward Arduino system in one hour. They used Arduino to successfully turn on the LED
lights while using the Thinkercad diagram we had created. As a result, the participants have a lot of
input that they may use moving forward.

Figure 78: Hands on Activity Using Arduino.

In addition, to demonstrate how the Arduino system is used in the product, we authority
members performed a prototype demonstration for the participants. Among the product
improvements we displayed were RFID systems, smart alarm systems, and automatic trash cans.

89
We developed an automatic trash can lid for the prototype that will make it less convenient to
dispose of trash by adding a sensor to identify the consumer to dispose of the waste. This is one of
the modifications we made to the prototype. We have also improved the trash can by adding a
sensor to measure the amount of trash inside. Additionally, the trash can have a buzzer that will
emit a beep sound when it is full. The next innovative invention is a smart alarm system, which
includes sensors and a few LEDs. This device has a range at which it can detect objects. The final
item is an RFID system that can be applied at the door. For instance, the student card is the only
way to enter the door because it carries an RFID chip.

PART J: MATERIALS SDG- FINAL PROGRAM: SUSTAINABILITY

VALUE FOR THE COMMUNITY

SULAM “Bengkel Asas Kemahiran Perisian Arduino”, which is significant in our project for
this semester, is an excellent practice and exposure for mechanical engineering students to share our
expertise with society, especially in rural areas. One of our primary objectives for our program was
to implement the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Two main SDGs goals here are
“Quality education” and “Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure”. It is an attractive way to broad
the community’s knowledge and expose to them theory and practically about this topic that will
eventually benefits them in their daily lives.
The implementation of quality education element in our program believes that it will result to
improve access to technology especially students in rural areas by providing them basic training on
Arduino Software. students in the community can learn how to use technology to create and
innovate and expand their imagination with ease of current technologies which can help them
succeed in school and in future careers. In addition, this will also increase employability based on
90
training with Arduino software which can give students in the community valuable skills that can
make them more attractive to employers in technology-related fields as well as increasing their
chances of finding good jobs.
To develop a better nation, it must start from the intellective community with good
infrastructure to learn new knowledge. By providing training on Arduino software, students in
the community can learn how to use technology to improve infrastructure, such as creating low-
cost solutions for water, transportation and energy. In that case, it will also encourage ideas of
innovation with variety of programming languages and not just limited to Arduino software.
Students in the community can learn how to use technology to create new products and services
which can drive economic growth and create new job opportunities. Furthermore, learning
Arduino software can be a bridge in today’s digital world as they can explore many other things
related based on experience handling Arduino projects and indirectly promoting sustainable
practices to develop sustainable solutions that help to save energy, reduce waste and minimize
the use of resources, which can be beneficial for the environment and the community's economy.

91
PART K: PROMOTE SDG-FINAL PROGRAM: SUSTAINABILITY VALUE
FOR THE COMPANY

As part of our SULAM project “Bengkel Kemahiran Asas Perisian Arduino” conducting
knowledge exposure and taught the basics of our expertise to the community in rural areas along
with other skills related that are within STEM knowledge. This program focuses on both
Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) which are; 4: Quality education and 9: Industry, Innovation
and Infrastructure. Throughout our completed program, the participants are currently in boarding
secondary school and were not exposed enough to the current STEM syllabus. Most of them did not
have complete access to digital knowledge and lack of basic digital jargon such as
“microcontroller”, “circuit/litar” and so on. Some of them show much interest in the topics and
wish to learn more about digital knowledge and STEM. Thus, for his program to be more exposed
and aware to targeted audiences, several approaches have been taken to make sure that the
information of our program well delivered. The poster and video were posted online and shared to
community circles through mainstream social media platforms such as TikTok, WhatsApp,
Instagram and YouTube. Below are some proof of publicizing the program.

11.1 Promote demonstrate the implication of the project in relation of SDG.

“Bengkel kemahiran asas perisian Arduino” which combines theory and practical learning lessons
aims to benefit the community in numerous ways based on the SULAM program that has been
effectively delivered. As our program is initiated, we want to make sure that our objectives are
successfully achieved whilst assisting the community implant good quality value as output from our
program so that the community around will also enjoy the result. The SDG element: Industry,
Innovation and Infrastructure aims to improve their communities, such as creating low-cost
solutions for social problems, this can help the community to become more self-sufficient and
improve the quality of life for its members.

11.2 Share the final program to society.

After completing the program, we intended to educate others about the significance of SDGs
implemented. Thus, promoting and advertising campaigns was conducted to spread awareness and
educate the others via posters and digital marketing. We utilised the social media campaign as main
platform to urge the elements of SDGs used in our program through YouTube, Instagram,
92

PART L: FINAL IMPACT SDG: SUSTAINABILITY VALUE OF FOR THE
COMMUMITY
Every piece of knowledge that is given will definitely impart some amount of new
knowledge to an individual. The objective of applying the two SDG values, Quality Education and
Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, to society can be achieved with the development of
knowledge among the participants present. From the program that has been conducted and also the
positive feedback received, we are sure that the participants who attended received useful input
regarding the topic presented. We were informed that the topic we provide is closely tied to the
design curriculum in schools that employ Arduino software. As a result, delivering knowledge in a
more casual manner allows participants to better comprehend the topic, especially junior high
school students. The hands-on session we conducted with them also gave them new knowledge,
particularly about the more advanced programming language used to integrate the Arduino system
into a new project.
For the upper secondary students that are involved in the program, although it is slightly less
related to their syllabus at school, on average they give a positive response and follow the program
that is conducted with full discipline. They are also eager to explore new things, particularly those
involving cutting-edge technology. We also accomplished in broadening participants' thoughts and
pique their curiosity in the field of technology. They are highly enthusiastic and interested in
continuing their studies in that sector at the higher education level if given the opportunity. The
participants were also asked about the tools used in the creation of the Arduino project, and they
stated that they intend to obtain those tools in order to create a simple device that will be useful in
everyday life, as well as to apply the knowledge gained from the program in which they
participated.

100
CONCLUSION

To be conclude, both the participants and we as authority figures find the "Bengkel
Kemahiran Asas Perisian Arduino" program at the Pertubuhan Rumah Anak Yatim/Miskin
Penyayang to be very relevant. The participants in this class have learned to think creatively
and have had the chance to learn something new to them, Arduino. Additionally, as committee
members, we can develop our leadership skills and offer fresh experience in program holding.
Furthermore, this program offers us the chance to become more familiar with outside parties
and learn the steps that must be taken to conduct a program. Apart from that, we also gained
some knowledge about Arduino-based product invention. The essay provides some useful
revelations about technology that are consistent with how quickly technology is evolving these
days.
