Subject : These test methods cover direct-current procedures for the measurement of dc insulation
resistance, volume resistance, and surface resistance.
Responsibility: Engineer
Summary of test: The resistance or conductance of a material specimen or of a capacitor is
determined from a measurement of current or of voltage drop under specified conditions. By using
the appropriate electrode systems, surface and volume resistance or conductance may be measured
separately. The resistivity or conductivity can then be calculated when the required specimen and
electrode dimensions are known.
Apparatus:
i. Power Supply—Asource of very steady direct voltage is required
ii. Guard Circuit—Whether measuring resistance of an insulating material with two
electrodes or with a three-terminal system, consider how the electrical connections are
made between the test instrument and the test specimen. If the test specimen relatively
high (10^10 to 10^15 ohms) resistance is expected.
iii. Direct Measurements— Current-measuring devices available include electrometers, d-c
amplifiers with indicating meters, and galvanometers.
iv. Comparison Methods—A Wheatstone-bridge circuit may be used to compare the
resistance of the specimen with that of a standard resistor.
Specimen:
i. Insulation Resistance or Conductance Determination: The measurement is of greatest
value when the specimen has the form, electrodes, and mounting required in actual.
ii. Volume Resistance or Conductance Determination: Test specimens may be in the form
of circular, square, or rectangular. Measure the average thickness of the specimen and
place the desired electrode for the test.
iii. Surface Resistance or Conductance Determination: Test specimens may be in the form of
circular, square, or rectangular. The three electrode arrangements are made toobtain the
required value.
Procedure :
i. Conductance-Properly mount the specimen in the test chamber. If the test chamber and
the conditioning chamber are the same, the specimens should be mounted before the
conditioning is started. Use 60 s as the time of electrification and 500 ± 5 V as the
applied voltage.

ii. Volume Resistivity- Measure and record the dimensions of the electrodes and width of
guard gap, Calculate the effective area of the electrode. Use 60 s as the time of
electrification, and 500 ± 5 V as the applied direct voltage.
iii. Surface Resistance- Measure the electrode dimensions and the distance between the
electrodes use 60 s for the time of electrification ,and apply a direct voltage of 500 ± 5 V.
Calculation :
i. Calculate the volume resistivity and the volume conductivity using the equations:
ii. Calculate the surface resistivity and the surface conductivity
Volume resistivity (µΩ∙cm) = [measured bulk resistance (µΩ) x line width (0.2cm) x
line height (cm)]
