Electrical Design Report

[Link] Installation
1.1 Introduction

This report elaborates on the envisaged electrical system design for G+7 MIXED USE
BUILDING building proposed to be constructed at SIDAMO HAWASSA. sub city.
Mains electric power will be supplied from the nearest source of the Ethiopian electric Power
Corporation (EEPCO). It is assumed that EEPCO’s Supply shall be realized through over head
distribution transformers capable of delivering estimated peak demand. Electric power within the
premise of the project will be delivered in the form of a three phase 380 volts 50 Hz systems by
means undergroundNYY feeder cable.

1.2 Scope of design work

The electrical design work as shown on the accompanying drawings is worked out according to
appropriate standards and norms like EBCS-10. DIN. VDE and IEE wiring regulation and the
prevailing norms of Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo).

1.3 Lighting system

All lighting system is designed with the use of compact Florescent or energy saving lamps with
illumination level for each room set as per the EbCS-10. The Calculation for the number of light
fixture for each room and the illumination level is accordance with the relevant clause of EBCS-
10. Light fixtures are selected to fit the function.
The following formulas are applied while calculating the number of fixtures for each room.

N= E x A
Uf * Mf * ø
Where:
E= Illumination level required ( lux)
A= Room area ( sq.m)
Ø = Lumen output of lamp ( in lux)

1.4 Service power and socket out lets

Each area in each building is provided with appropriate number and reliable power socket outlets
to various appliances that the customer might require, with due attention also given to the power
distribution to sub sections through normal utility power.

1.5 Distribution boards

1.5.1 Sub circuit design
The circuits for lighting and socket out lets are designed in order to accommodate equal
distribution of power to each sub circuit with the lighting load determined as follows.
P=Ni X Wi
Where:N number of lamps in the sub circuit
W the power of each lamp in KW
i Type of fitting in each sub circuit
Similarly the loads for the of each socket sub circuit is determined by
P = NX200 w
Where:N number of socket in the sub circuit

1.5.2. Main Distribution Board (MDB)

The Central main distribution board is located in ground floor which is suitable for riser area
near to the stairs area and shall be flush mounted type made of metal enclosure frames fixed to
the floor comprising all insulated modular units (MCB) and miniature automatic circuit breakers
rating and quantity shown on the relevant drawing. The bus bar system for CMDB is selected
one step higher from the main circuit breakers. And shall be made of copper. The panel shall be
complete with all the necessary gland plates. Cable entries, Fixing brackets and supports suitable
for the cable specified.
The following formula has been used to determine the current ratings of miniature circuit
breakers where S Total KVA and p is total KW.

1.5.3. Sub Distribution Board ( MDB’)

The Sub distribution boards are located within each floor location and in line with the main
distribution boards each panels are assigned to feed lighting and service socket circuits. In
similar manner as MDB the SDBS comprise of miniature circuit breakers. The bus-bars for the
panels have been selected on step higher from the main circuit breaker ratings to carry a current
of 20 to 50 percent of the rated current. The panel shall be complete with all the necessary gland
plates. Cable entries, Fixing brackets and supports suitable for the cable specified an addition of
25% reserve spaces has been left for the future similar formulas’ as per the main board has been

Standard cable sizing directly influences load capacity and system reliability by ensuring cables can handle planned electrical loads without overheating. Proper sizing prevents power loss and potential hazards, enhancing reliability and longevity of the building's electrical system .

Main electrical components such as circuit breakers, cable dimensions, and grounding systems are organized into panels, each serving specific building areas. These components are integrated through a centralized design that considers load balancing, safety regulations, and efficient energy distribution, ensuring coherent operability across the building .

Cable cross-section in the electrical design determines the capacity and safety of electrical transmission by influencing the current-carrying capability. It is specified for different circuits based on factors such as the type and current of the fittings, ensuring that each section matches the standard requirements shown in the related panel schedules .

Power distribution design involves dividing the building into different panel sections with specific circuits, each accommodating particular loads such as lighting and appliances. The design balances load distribution and safety by using appropriately sized breakers and cables, ensuring efficient operation under standard load conditions .

Using compact fluorescent lamps in the building design significantly enhances energy efficiency by providing higher lumen output per watt consumed compared to traditional lighting. CFLs' long lifespan and lower heat emission contribute to reduced energy consumption and maintenance costs, aligning with sustainable building practices .

Designing the grounding system involves strategic considerations of safety, fault current mitigation, and compliance with electrical standards. It requires careful planning to ensure effective fault current drainage while maintaining system stability, and it must adhere to local and international electrical safety standards .

The diversity factor reduces the total calculated power by accounting for the non-simultaneous operation of all electrical appliances. For the G+7 Mixed Use Building, applying a diversity factor of 0.9 reduced the total power from 101.54 KW to 88.27 KW, thus optimizing the electrical system and cost-efficiency without compromising performance .

The illumination level design in the G+7 Mixed Use Building adheres to the EBCS-10 lighting standards, ensuring appropriate light levels for each room based on its function. The design employs compact fluorescent lamps and calculates lighting requirements using the formula N= E x A / (Uf * Mf * ø), thereby aligning with the required illumination standards .

The method to calculate the number of light fixtures per room uses the formula N= E x A / (Uf * Mf * ø), where E is the required illumination level, A is the room area, Uf is the utilization factor, Mf is the maintenance factor, and ø is the luminous flux of the lamps. Factors like the room's function and maintenance conditions impact the calculation .

The electrical design for the G+7 Mixed Use Building accommodates power distribution by utilizing a three-phase 380 volts, 50 Hz system delivered through an underground NYY feeder cable. It ensures compliance with standards such as EBCS-10, DIN, VDE, and the IEE wiring regulations, as well as the norms of the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo).
