Thermodynamics 301

This course covers principles of thermodynamics including ideal gas cycles like Otto, Joule, and Rankine cycles. Students will learn to apply the second law of thermodynamics to gas cycles and methods to improve efficiency. The course also examines steam engines, gas turbines, nozzles, and thermodynamics concepts through lectures, tutorials, assignments and labs.

Credit Hours: 3 Prerequisite Course: Engineering Thermodynamics I

Contact Hours: 45

Course Purpose
The aim of this unit is to enable the student to:
Understand the principle of operation of various cycles,i.e ideal gas cycles. Otto, Joule, etc and
describe the principle of operation gas turbine cycle.
Expected Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course unit, the student should be able to:
1. Apply principle of Second law of thermodynamics to derive equations air standard
gas cycles
2. Apply different methods to improve thermal efficiency for ideal gas/ air cycles.
3. Evaluate the temperatures and Pressures at various stages in steam engine and gas turbine
cycles.

Course Content
Air standard cycles: Carnot, Otto, Diesel, Dual, Atkinson and Joule (Brayton) cycles.
Temperature – entropy (T-s), Pressure- volume diagrams of the air cycles, thermal efficiency of the
air cycles.
Thermal and mechanical efficiencies of reciprocating spark ignition (S.I), compression ignition(C.I)
and Rotary engines, engine trials for indicated, brake and friction powers, mechanical and thermal
efficiencies, energy balance.

balance and inter-cooling. Steam power cycles: Carnot, Rankine and modified Rankine, Ericsson
cycles. Reheat, regenerative, cogeneration, steam and reaction turbines stages, efficiency, pressure
compounding, pressure-volume, temperature- saturation, h-s diagrams; super saturation, degree of
super cooling.
