Zinc Recovery and Magnetism Myths

A company tried using magnetic attraction to recover zinc from a junkyard but was unsuccessful. This is because zinc is not a ferromagnetic material and therefore is not attracted to magnets. Two statements about this were evaluated: (1) a magnet was too weak, which is false because zinc does not exhibit magnetic properties, and (2) only pure iron can be separated, which is also false because iron does not need to be pure to be attracted to a magnet. Ferromagnetic refers to materials that are strongly responsive to magnetic fields like iron, nickel, cobalt, and alloys like steel and alnicos.

A COMPANY TRIED TO RECOVER ZINC FROM A JUNKYARD USING
MAGNETIC ATTRACTION WITHOUT ANY SUCCESS. STATE
WHETHER EACH OF THE FOLLOWING STATEMENTS IS 'TRUE' OR
'FALSE'. EXPLAIN YOUR ANSWER.

(a) The magnet used was too weak to attract zinc.

False. The statement is false because zinc is not attracted to

magnets. Zinc is not a ferromagnetic material, which means it does
not exhibit magnetic properties like iron or steel. Therefore, even the
strongest magnets would not attract zinc.

WHETHER EACH OF THE FOLLOWING STATEMENTS IS 'TRUE' OR
'FALSE'. EXPLAIN YOUR ANSWER.

(b) Only pure iron can be separated by a magnet.

False. This statement is also false. While iron is a ferromagnetic

material and is highly responsive to magnets, it's not necessary for
the iron to be "pure" to be attracted by a magnet.
FERROMAGNETIC?
WHAT IS FERROMAGNETIC?

Ferromagnetic is a property exhibited by certain materials that makes them

strongly responsive to magnetic fields.

The key difference from "magnetic", magnetic is a broader term that

includes various types of magnetic behaviors, while "ferromagnetic"
specifically describes materials that exhibit strong, permanent
magnetization when placed in a magnetic field. Ferromagnetism is just one
category of magnetic behavior, and there are other types of magnetism
with different properties and characteristics

WHAT QUESTIONS SHOULD YOU ASK ABOUT THE EXPERIMENT OR MIXTURE BEFORE
DECIDING ON THE SEPARATION TECHNIQUE WHICH IS FILTRATION TO USE?

What is the nature of the mixture?

Is it a heterogeneous or homogeneous mixture? Filtration is typically
used to separate solid particles from a liquid in heterogeneous mixtures.
What are the physical properties of the components in the mixture?
Consider factors such as particle size, density, solubility, and state of
matter (solid, liquid, gas) of the components. These properties can guide
your choice of separation method.
WHY IS FILTRATION OF SEAWATER UNABLE TO OBTAIN A PURE FILTRATE?
WHAT ARE THE IMPURITIES FOUND IN THE FILTRATE?

Filtration of seawater cannot obtain a pure filtrate because

seawater contains dissolved salts that are too small to be
removed by filtration alone. The impurities found in the filtrate
are mainly dissolved salts like sodium chloride (table salt) and
various other minerals.
