UNIT 6: Investigating Visual Production and Technology
As individuals or as groups, you must:-
Research, film, edit, and evaluate, a visually creative video. This SHOULD involve you
experimenting with visuals, but COULD be in the form of a music video, if it is creative
enough.
To put it simply, identify a visual challenge, and then investigate how to solve it.
WHAT CAN YOU MAKE?
The focus of this is to play, investigate, and experiment with visuals.
You will need to research a range of ways to achieve this, and then make something.
This might include, but not limited to:-
• Lighting experimentation
• Green screen techniques
• Animation effects, or rotoscoping
• Camera lens & settings experimentation (macro, fish eye, white balance, etc)
• Special effects
• After effects and Photoshop
• Playing with editing software
It will be worth investigating things such as experimental or surrealist films, from Un Chien
Andalou (1929), to Under the Skin (2014), David Lynch, Svankmeyer, as well as a wide range
of adverts, music videos, and even games.
Key music video directors to look at would be those that went on to do feature films, such
as Spike Jonze, Chris Cunningham, Jonathon Glazer, and Michel Gondry. As well as those
on this list, which also includes a few women.
22 Film Directors Who Started in Music Videos - Metacritic
You MUST ensure that you fully experiment with a substantial range of creative visual
techniques throughout the production. This experimentation MUST be tested, refined and
fully documented.
If it is a music video, try to find local bands or bands from the college to work with.
If it is a music video you will ALSO need to research music video history, conventions,
genres, and modern trends.
Every member of the group must take a role in designing, creating, experimenting in some
aspect of visuals. Make it clear who did what.
Make sure to provide both a continuous and final summative evaluation of your experience
and outline any problems and issues and how you dealt with them.
You will be required to work in a safe, sensible and professional manner at all times.
You must keep records/evidence of ALL work including meetings/ interviews, drafts, and
practical research on your individual blogs.
Also include the usual production paperwork, but go more in depth with it.
Any questions, let me know. Full grading criteria is on teams.
