IX. Read the following passage, and decide the statements are True or False.
Once there were lots of pandas in the mountain of Western China. Today they
are becoming extinct. The reason is that they cannot find enough food. Pandas
eat bamboo leaves. They do not like another food. The bamboo grows very
slowly. It can take 10 years for a bamboo to grow from a seed to a big plant.
Some types of bamboo have seeds every 60 years. Pandas must wait many years
for their food to grow. While the bamboo is growing, pandas do not have
enough leaves to eat.
Farmers are using more and more of the land on the mountain side to grow food
for man. The farmers cut down the bamboo. Bamboo leaves become less
pientiful. Pandas cannot find enough food to eat. They starve and die.
China and World Wildlife Fund (WWF) are trying to save the panda. In 1979 they
began to set up special parks where pandas live. One such park is the Wolong
Reserve in Sichuan. The Wolong Reserve has the highest number of pandas in the
world. Scientists come here to study the panda’s eating and mating habits. By

Today I'd like to begin a discussion on the problem of the heating up of the
earth. First, we'll touch on the relationship between fluorocarbons and the
ozone layer. You probably remember that the ozone layer is the protective
shield around the earth. It is important to all life, because it filters out harmful
90ultraviolet light from the sun. Ozone itself, a form of oxygen, is regularly
destroyed by natural chemical processes.
The problem now is that too much of the ozone layer is being destroyed.
Scientists suspect that certain chemicals, such as fluorocarbons, are contributing
to the depletion of the ozone layer. And how do we use fluorocarbons? The
most common uses are in spray cans and cooling systems. The chemical
pollution from these fluorocarbons can account for some of the ozone losses
that have been reported. There are, however, new studies linking the sun itself
to the depletion of the ozone layer. We'll go into that new study more next time.

polluting substances that exist naturally in the air. They include dust, pollen,
soil particles, and naturally occurring gases.
The rapid growth of population and industry and the increasing use of

‘The search for alternative sources of energy has led in various directions. Many
communities are burning garbage and other biological waste products to
produce electricity. Converting waste products to gases or oil is also an efficient
way to dispose of wastes.
Experimental work is being done to derive synthetic fuels from coal, oil shale,
and coal tars. But to date, that process has proven expensive. Other experiments
are underway to harness power with giant windmills. Geothermal power, heat
from the earth, is also being tested.
Some experts expect utility companies to revive hydroelectric power provided
one third of the electricity used in the United States, but today it supplies only 4
percent. The oceans are another potential source of energy. Scientists are
studying ways to convert the energy of ocean currents, tides, and waves to
electricity. Experiments are also underway to make use of temperature
differences in ocean water to produce energy.

In some rural agricultural societies, the collection of available fuel such as
firewood, dung cake, and agricultural waste can take 200 to 300 person-days per
year. As well as being time consuming, the typical patterns of collection lead to
deforestation, soil erosion, and ecological imbalances. In the future, experts
predict that even if food suppliers are adequate for rural populations, fuel
supplies for domestic use may not be.
In the light of such considerations, a team in India has developed a solar oven
for home use. The oven jis cheaply constructed; easily operated, and extremely
energy efficient. The device consists of an inner and outer metal box, a top
cover, and two panes of plain glass. The inner box is painted black to absorb
maximum solar radiation. The space between the two boxes is filled with an
insulating material, such as rice husks, which are easily available and which,
because of their high silicon content, neither attract insects nor rot easily. Other
easily available materials for insulation are ground nutshells or coconut shells,
An adjustable mirror mounted on one side of the oven box reflects the sunlight
into the interior, boosting the temperatures by 15-30 degrees Celsius. This is
most useful during the winter when the sun is lower. Inside the oven, a
temperature between 80 and 120 degrees Celsius above ambient temperature
can be maintained. This is sufficient to cook gradually but surely. Trials have
shown that all typical food dishes can be prepared in this solar device without
loss of taste or nutrition.
