(Taken from the Curriculum Guide) investigation on soil erosion S5ES-IVc-3 (Day 3 of 5)
Remember These:
Human activity on and around the earth’s surface whether it is in your backyard or down the park
are known to cause erosion 10 times more than naturally occurring processes. Human life has been the
number on cause of erosion dating back to the first millennium. Agriculture and construction are the 2
ways in which humans cause erosion. Construction when unnecessarily conducted can be quite
damaging to soil and dirt. Vegetation and agriculture are also 2 human causes of erosion because
humans move the top soil and make it prone to erosion.
Grazing and deforestation are also human causes of erosion because human life is making
the grounds surface soil bare and extremely prone to erosion by natural forces. Across America where
Key Concepts / Understandings to be soil is being eroded due to human activity.
Developed
Another way in which humans cause erosion is by simply watering their gardens. Erosion
occurs when watering the gardens of your residential property mainly because the force of water which
is coming from your garden hose or irrigation system is too fierce and it makes the soil eroded quite
quickly. We can prevent this also by not over watering garden areas containing soil.

ACTIVITY 4.2
Possible answer for activity 4.2
1. What are the human activities that causes soil erosion?
= the human activities that causes soil erosion are quarrying
deforestation , overgrazing and illegal logging
[Link] does deforestation and constructions cause soil erosion?
=Once the trees are gone the root systems that once held the soil firmly in place are lost as
well. Without this support system heavy rains will rapidly wash away the bare earth resulting in
widespread and rapid erosion.
[Link] does these affects our environment?
=This soil ends up in waterways and chokes out wildlife.
4. How does agriculture cause soil erosion?
=Farming: Erosion commonly occurs following conversion of natural vegetation to agricultural
land – carrying away fertile soil as well as fertilizers, pesticides and other agrochemicals.
Intensive agriculture is causing serious soil erosion.
5. Knowing that these human activities has harmful effects on the
living things and environment, what are the possible ways to reduce soil erosion.
= Plant grass and [Link] roots hold the soil together, while their leaves block rain and
stop it breaking the soil apart.
=Add mulch or rocks. This will weigh down the soil and protect the seeds and young plants
underneath from getting washed away.
=Improve drainage. All buildings should have gutters or pipes that can drain water effectively
out of your garden and into water collection systems. Without adequate drainage, heavy rain
could wash away a whole layer of topsoil
APPLICATION
Answer Key
Describe the following pictures in two sentences in your own words.
1. QUARRYING
Quarrying is the process of removing rock, sand, gravel or other minerals
from the ground in order to use them to produce materials for construction
or other uses.
2. Illegal Logging
Illegal logging is the harvest, transportation, purchase or sale of timber in violation of laws.
The harvesting procedure itself may be illegal, including using corrupt means to gain
access to forests; extraction without permission, or from a protected area
the cutting down of protected species
3. Deforestation
Deforestation is clearing Earth's forests on a massive scale, often resulting in
damage to the quality of the land. Deforestation is the permanent destruction of forests in
order to make the land available for other uses.
4. Overgrazing
Overgrazing occurs when plants are exposed to intensive grazing for extended periods of time,
or without sufficient recovery periods. It can be caused by either livestock in poorly managed
agricultural applications, game reserves, or nature reserves.
