Subject: Disciplines and Ideas in Applied Social Sciences

Grade Level: Grade 11

Objective: Defining social sciences and applied social sciences.

Learning across curriculum:

1) English Language - The objective of defining social sciences and applied social
sciences can be extended to English Language by examining the influence of social
sciences on language development and communication. Students can explore how
social sciences shape the way we use language and understand its impact on
society.

2) Mathematics - In mathematics, students can explore how social sciences and

applied social sciences utilize statistical analysis and data interpretation. They can
learn how to collect and analyze data to make informed decisions and solve social
issues.

3) Science - Science and social sciences are interconnected as they both aim to
understand the world around us. Students can explore the relationship between
social sciences and scientific research, such as how scientific discoveries impact
society and how social factors influence scientific advancements.

ENGAGE:

Teaching Strategy: Interactive Quizzes

Instructional Materials: Quiz questions, whiteboard or projector

1) Idea - Conduct an interactive quiz where students answer questions related to

social sciences and applied social sciences. The questions can be displayed on a
whiteboard or projected on a screen. Students can participate individually or in
teams, and the teacher can provide immediate feedback to encourage active
participation.

2) Idea - Use a Mystery Box activity to create curiosity and anticipation among
students. Fill a box with objects related to social sciences and applied social
sciences. Students will take turns reaching inside the box, feeling the objects, and
guessing their relevance to the subject. This activity encourages critical thinking and
sparks interest in the topic.

EXPLORE:

Activity 1: Case Studies

Teaching Strategy: Cooperative Learning

Materials: Case study scenarios, paper, pens

Significance: Students will analyze real-life case studies to understand how social
sciences and applied social sciences are applied in different situations.

Instructions:

1) Divide students into groups of 4-5.

2) Provide each group with a case study scenario.

3) In their groups, students will discuss and analyze the scenario, identifying the
social science concepts and applied social science principles at play.

4) Each group will present their analysis to the class.

Rubric:

Criteria: Analysis and understanding of social science concepts and applied social
science principles.
Points: 5 points for thorough analysis, 3 points for adequate analysis, 1 point for
limited analysis.

Assessment Questions:

1) How did social science concepts contribute to the understanding of the case
study?

2) What are the applied social science principles that can be observed in the
scenario?

3) How can the knowledge from this case study be applied in real-life situations?

Activity 2: Role-Playing

Teaching Strategy: Experiential Learning

Materials: Role-playing scenarios, props (optional)

Significance: Role-playing allows students to experience and understand social

science concepts and applied social science principles through real-life simulations.

Instructions:

1) Provide students with role-playing scenarios that involve social issues or

situations where applied social science principles can be observed.

2) Assign roles to students and provide them with time to prepare for the role-play.

3) Students will perform their role-plays in front of the class.

Rubric:

Criteria: Performance, understanding of social science concepts and applied social

science principles.

Points: 5 points for excellent performance and understanding, 3 points for

satisfactory performance and understanding, 1 point for limited performance and
understanding.
Assessment Questions:

1) How did the role-play demonstrate the understanding of social science concepts?

2) What applied social science principles were observed during the role-play?

3) How the lessons learned from the role-play be applied in real-life situations?

Activity 3: Concept Mapping

Teaching Strategy: Visual Aids

Materials: Chart paper, markers

Significance: Concept mapping helps students visualize and organize their

understanding of social sciences and applied social sciences.

Instructions:

1) Provide students with a central concept related to social sciences and applied
social sciences.

2) In small groups, students will create concept maps, connecting sub-concepts and
illustrating the relationships between them.

3) Each group will present their concept map to the class.

Rubric:

Criteria: Organization, clarity, and accuracy of concept map.

Points: 5 points for well-organized and accurate concept map, 3 points for
adequately organized and accurate concept map, 1 point for limited organization and
accuracy.
Assessment Questions:

1) How did the concept map illustrate the relationships between social science
concepts?

2) What are some key sub-concepts that were included in the concept map?

3) How does the concept map demonstrate the understanding of applied social
science principles?

EXPLAIN:

Teaching Strategy: Lecture and Discussion

1) The teacher will deliver a lecture on the definition and scope of social sciences
and applied social sciences. The lecture will include examples and explanations to
ensure student understanding.

2) After the lecture, the teacher will facilitate a discussion where students can ask
questions, clarify concepts, and share their insights on the importance of social
sciences and applied social sciences in society.

ELABORATE:

Teaching Strategy: Project-Based Learning

Task 1: Research and Presentation

Students will choose a specific social science discipline and research its application
in a real-life context. They will create a presentation highlighting the findings of their
research and how it relates to applied social sciences.

Task 2: Field Study

Students will conduct a field study where they observe and analyze a social issue or
phenomenon. They will apply social science concepts and principles to interpret and
understand the issue, and then propose possible solutions or interventions based on
their findings.

EVALUATE:
Teaching Strategy: Inquiry-Based Learning

Instructional Materials: Assessment questions, paper, pens

Question 1: Explain the difference between social sciences and applied social
sciences. Provide examples to support your explanation.

Question 2: How do social sciences and applied social sciences contribute to our
understanding of society and social issues?

Question 3: Choose a real-life scenario and explain how social science concepts
and applied social science principles can be applied to address the issue.

Assignment:
