[Link]: On 5th January 2024, Friday, Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management in Mangalore
hosted a captivating session on "Computational Intelligence for Cognitive Computing - Challenges and
Opportunities." for the students of 5th semester Artificial Intelligence and Data Science students. The
distinguished guest speaker for the event was Dr. Vijaya Kumar B P, a renowned professor from the
Information Science and Engineering Department at Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Bangalore, and the
Chair of IEEE CIS R10.
Dr. Kumar commenced the session with an enlightening introduction, emphasizing the practical aspect of
engineering as applied science. He highlighted the pivotal role of data in the engineering process,
illustrating how it shapes the design of algorithms and their applications.
The session seamlessly transitioned into an interactive discussion on mobility management and
recognition systems, exploring their real-world applications. Dr. Kumar underscored the importance of
adhering to regulations and ethical considerations in the design and implementation of products in these
domains.
Dr. Kumar delved into the realm of Machine Learning, discussing its three major applications:
classification, function approximation, and optimization with given resources and constraints. He
emphasized the growing demand for Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) in multinational corporations,
outlining their versatile capabilities.
As the session progressed, Dr. Kumar shared concrete examples, including the relevance of ML in the
development of AR glasses. In conclusion, he introduced the concept of Computational Intelligence as the
next generation of AI. Driven by data, Computational Intelligence aims to develop intelligent machines
capable of addressing real-world problems that defy easy mathematical modeling. Dr. Kumar stressed the
goal of achieving human-like decision-making by embracing tolerance for approximation, uncertainty,
imprecision, and partial truth.
