Introduction
Welcome to the Student Assessment Tasks for SITXWHS005 Participate in safe work practices.
These tasks have been designed to help you demonstrate the skills and knowledge that you have
learnt during your course.
Please ensure that you read the instructions provided with these tasks carefully. You should also
follow the advice provided in the Hospitality Works Student User Guide. The Student User Guide
provides important information for you relating to completing assessment successfully.
Assessment for this unit
For you to be assessed as competent, you must successfully complete two assessment tasks:
● Assessment Task 1: Observations – This task requires the student to work safely in the
kitchen on three separate occasions. It is to be co-assessed with any other practical cooking
assessment.
● Assessment Task 2: Project – This task requires you to complete the following activities:
o Participate in a WHS meeting
o Participate in an emergency response drill
o Participate in a debriefing session and complete an incident report.
Kitchen time required
You will require time in the kitchen to complete Assessment Task 1. This may be in your
College’s training kitchen or in a commercial kitchen in your student’s workplace. You will find
more information about the requirements for training/commercial kitchens in the Hospitality
Works Trainer and Assessor User Guide.

● use predetermined health, safety and security procedures and safe work practices in work
functions on at least three occasions

This assessment task is a practical one where you will demonstrate your ability to
work safely in the kitchen on three separate occasions. Your assessor will provide
you with the specific details of your tasks to complete while in the kitchen. This unit
will be co-assessed while completing other practical assessment tasks. Your
assessor will provide you with the details directly of which unit/units will be co-
assessed with this unit.
1. Prepare to work safely.
Prepare to complete your activity provided to you by your assessor:
● Make sure you are familiar with your College or training environment’s WHS
policies and procedures, hazard reporting requirements and safe work
practices that you have learned and trained with during the training part of this
unit.
● Think about the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and clothing/uniform
you will require and when you may need to use or wear it.
● Think about the reporting requirements that are in place at your College or
kitchen environment and what to do in case of a breach.
● Review the observation checklist for this assessment task so you know the
criteria you are going to be assessed against.
2. Work safely.
Undertake the activities provided to you by your assessor on three separate
occasions.
Your assessor will complete the observation checklist on each of the three
occasions.
At least once during the three observations, you are required to complete a hazard
identification form You can use the hazard identification report as part of the food
safety program and policies and procedures of the College or commercial kitchen,
or you can use the template provided.

emergency or potential emergency situation, seeking assistance where appropriate

advised by your assessor.

What do I need to demonstrate?
During your practical assessments you will be required to demonstrate a range of
the skills and knowledge that you have developed during your course. These
include:
● During emergency situations:
o identify a potential emergency or emergency event
o follow organisational procedures
o seek assistance from others
o complete required documentation
● Join in an organisation’s health, safety and security processes:
o contribute to health, safety and security management practices
o participate in the consultation process
o report issues and concerns.
How will I provide evidence?
Your assessor will provide you with templates to complete each task. You will find
some detailed information about providing evidence; this will include;
● a completed Discussion Document
● a completed Incident Report Form.
You will need to complete each activity and submit the required task at the end of
each step completed.

Most importantly, ask for help if you are having trouble!
1. Participate in a WHS meeting.
You are required to participate in a group WHS meeting to discuss emergency
procedures and responses. Your assessor, in the role of your supervisor, will run
the WHS meeting to outline general WHS considerations, discuss and demonstrate
potential emergency situations that may occur and to remind everyone of the
procedures to follow.
During the meeting, you are required to show full participation including:
● a discussion of general WHS considerations using the Discussion Template
provided
● talking about the situations that might occur and asking any questions that you
think may be relevant to the situation from your perspective
● a demonstration that you know where the procedures are located and how to
follow them in the event of an emergency.
Record the outcomes from the meeting on the Discussion Template and submit to
your Assessor.
2. Emergency response simulation.
After you have participated in the WHS meeting, you are required to enact an
emergency response to a potential emergency as and when advised by your
assessor, you are required to demonstrate that you can:
● recognise and respond appropriately to the situation
● follow the security and emergency procedures relevant
● seek assistance from the correct person/people.

You will now debrief after the simulation to discuss the event and your response
and will then complete an individual incident report as though the simulation were
real.

of a real event?
● What are your key takeaways from your participation in the simulation?
