CHAPTER III
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This chapter will present the research design that will be used in the study.
It will also discuss the procedures, population, as well as the locale of the study,
data gathering tools and statistical interpretation of data. That will be gathered
from the respondents.
Research Design
The primary purpose of this study is to assess the level of awareness
residents in barangay Tibanga, Iligan City regarding the acts punishable under
R.A 9262 (Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children Act of 2004). Given
the said purpose, the determination of the level of awareness among residents in
barangay Tibanga in Iligan City regarding the acts punishable under R.A 9262 is
descriptive in nature.
Therefor this research will employ descriptive method of research. In the
same way survey method will be employed in order to gather or generate needed
information for the completion of this research.
Locale of the Study
This study will be conducted in barangay Tibanga, Iligan City. The
researchers chose this to be the locale of the study since one of their member is
an elected sangguniang kabataan kagawad. With this, it will be a lot easier for
them to look for possible respondents with the help of the local barangay officials.
23
Respondents
The researchers would want to have 100 respondents from any of the
residents in barangay Tibanga, Iligan City. The respondents will be coming from
the different purok as per approved by the local barangay officials.
Sampling Procedure
The researchers is deeming to employ random sampling method, in
collecting data from the respondents. Random sampling is a part of the sampling
technique in which each sample has an equal probability of being chosen
([Link]
By employing this kind of random sampling technique everyone from the
target population will have the chance to be chosen to be part of the targeted
respondents to complete this study. Hence, bias and other miscalculations will
also be eradicate that will add up to the credibility of the study to be conducted.
Data Gathering Procedure
A letter of permission to conduct a survey address to the Barangay
Captains of Barangay Tibanga will be made by the researchers and will then be
sent to the research adviser for prof reading. Together with the letter is the
researcher-made questionnaire which will be subject for panel’s validation.
Next, when the letter and the questionnaires have been reviewed and
validated by the research adviser and the dean it will be delivered immediately by
the researchers to the barangay hall.
24
After which when the letter to conduct survey is approved by the
Barangay Captain. The researchers will then present the approved letter to the
certain purok leaders within the barangay. The researcher personally
administered the questionnaire to the randomly chosen respondents. A short
briefing was done before the respondents started answering the question
Then the researchers will immediately start to look for the respondent- to
answer their survey questionnaires. Basically, with the so-called observation of
the minimum health standards during this time of pandemic and proper social
distancing.
Next is researchers will wait for about three to five minutes if the present
situation allows face to face distribution of survey questionnaires. Then they will
personally collect the questionnaires from the respondents. This is to secure the
confidentiality of the information provided by the respondents themselves.
lastly the data gathered will be tallied and interpreted to obtain plausible
and concrete answers to the questions formulated in the preceding chapters of
this research.
Instrument Used
This study utilized a researcher-made questionnaire. The said
questionnaire was validated by the members of the defense panel and has been
verified for clarity and clearness. The questionnaire was translated in Filipino and
was pre-tested to housewives who were not included as respondents of the
25
study. Pre-testing was done to test the instrument for clarity and conciseness.
The survey questionnaire was composed of two parts.
The first part gathered the demographic characteristics of the respondents
which included age, gender, educational attainment, civil status and occupation.
The second part was composed of 21 acts/statements considered to be
punishable acts of violence against women and their children as stated in R.A.
9262 that determined the level of awareness and perception on the provisions of
the said Republic Act. In this part, the respondents were instructed to indicate
their level of awareness on the provisions of the said Republic Act by putting a
check on the appropriate column
Furthermore, they also stated their level of awareness (perception) as to
the extent by which they want the given statements to be considered as act of
violence against women and their children by checking the appropriate column.
The survey questionnaire will be answered by the respondents in a four-
point scale coded 4, 3, 2, and 1. The respondents will indicate their level of
awareness, by checking on numbers 4, 3, 2, and 1. Which means: 4- Highly
Aware; 3 – Aware; 2- Unaware; 1- Highly Unaware.
Statistical Treatment of Data
After the respondents answered the questionnaire, the responses will be
tallied, tabulated and analyzed. Different statistical treatment will be used after
recording the answer from survey questionnaire. For appropriate analysis and
interpretation, the following statistical tools will be employed:
26
1. Percentage and frequency. These tools are used to determine the
distribution of the responses in each category, while percentage is employed to
determine the position of the respondents’ responses out of the total number of
responses utilized in the study.
f
The formula for the percentage is P= X 100
n
Where: P = percentage (%)
f = frequency
n = summation of the total population
100 = constant
2. Weighted Mean. The weighted mean is a given set of non-negative {
x 1 x 2 x 3 … x n} data with non-negative weights { w 1 w2 w3 … w n}can be derived from
the formula.
w1 x 1+ w2 x2 +…
Formula: X=
n
Where: X= the number of respondents
W= the weight given to the response of x
X = the weighted mean
N = total population
3. T-Test. It is a type of inferential statistic used to determine if there is a
significant difference between the means of two groups, which may be related in
certain features ([Link] The
researcher decided to use this statistical tool simply because they are very much
27
positive that this statistical tool suits the aim of the problem which is to test
whether Is there a significant difference between the respondents’ demographic
profile and the level of awareness with regards on the acts punishable under R.A
9262 (Anti-Violence Against Woman and their Children Act of 2004)?
Scoring procedure
The researchers will make use of the “Likert Scale” to interpret the result
of the tabulations and computations of the data gathered from the respondents.
The following will be used in scoring of the outputs which will determine
the intensity or level of awareness among residents in barangay Tibanga, ligan
City regarding the acts punishable under the R.A 9262 (Anti-Violence Against
Women and Children Act 2004).
Table 1. Scoring Scale of the Weighted Mean in determining the level of
awareness among residents in Barangay Tibanga, Iligan City regarding the R.A
9262 (Anti-Violence Against Women and Children Act of 2004)
