(a) The test speciuren shall be cut fiom the rveld zone as specil'ied by the relevant

4 PROCEDURE
The procedure shall be as fbllows:
(a) The hardness shall be tneasured by rneans o1' the Vickers hardness test. The
equiprnent used and the rnethod o['test shall comply with AS 1817, except that the
spacing o1'the indentations shall cornply with Itern (d) below. The test surface of the
test specimen shall be norrnal to the axis of the indentor.
(b) No significant difference has been lbund in the hardness {'igures obtained when using
this spacing, cornpared with the spacing given in AS I 817.
!
(c) The test should be conducted using a nominal fbrce ol49 N (HV 5).
o
! (d) Where the tnaxitnutn hardness exceeds 350 HV, the traverse should be repeated using
o a notninal fbrce of 98 N (HV l0). In such a case. all further traverses on the test
o specimen shall be conducted zrt the sarne level of fbrce.
=
o
E
C
(e) The rninirnutn nutnber and location of hardness test traverses shall be as shown in
o
o
Figure 2 for the weld types ancl thickness shown. For other rveld configurations, the
f following principles Lrnderlying the traverse positions in Figure 2 shall be used:
o
!
c
o (i) The traverses shall be located so that they approxirnately intersect regions of
=
!.E rninir-num and rnaxirnurn hardness.
.@
! (ii) Hardness traverses shall be rnade through all weld toes and the weld root.
o
o
6
o
(iii) The traverses near the surlace shall be parallel to and 2 rnrn below the plate
a surface.
C
o The traverses shall include rvelcl nretal, heat-aff'ected zone and parent metal, with a
o
O
c tninitnutn of 1wo indentations located within the weld rnetal. The traverses shall
o
.o extend otttwards fronr the rveld to the point where at Ieast two consecutive
o indentations give hardness values within t5 HV of the unaf{'ected parent rnetal.
f
o
C
NOTES:
o
o
I Parent metal hardness [Link] be determined prior to testing the traverses at points located
o at sinrilar position through the nraterial thickness. A minimunr of three indentations
o
f
should be rrade.
+ 2 Significant hardness effect rray occur outside the visible heat-affected zones (e.g. in
O
O
N
softening, in quenched and tempered steel, in certain aluminium alloys). Care should
o therefore be taken when testing. to ensllre that such regions have been traversed.
@
N (f) The distance between centres of adjacent HV 5 or HV l0 indentations shall be
C
o 0.5 10.025 [Link]. Spacing should be [Link] by appropriate use of the measuring
E [Link] or with zr cross-slide table.
