Design of Pump Station
GENERAL
The following are the standard specifications for pump stations to be installed
and connected to the Buodoor Bagdad sewer system. The purpose of these
specifications is to provide a minimum standard for pump stations that complies.
Sanitary pump stations shall consist of a wet well, sewage pumps, control systems,
electrical systems (normal and emergency).
The contractor shall be responsible for extending all necessary utilities to the
pump station site (electrical, phone etc.). Sewer pump stations will only be
considered when the thorough study of all alternatives clearly indicates the
impracticability of gravity collection and disposal. All pump stations shall be
equipped with a minimum of 8 hours of emergency storage or an emergency
generator.
PUMP STATION AND FORCE MAIN DESIGN CALCULATIONS
1- Average Daily Flow :
2. Peak Daily Flow (PDF) = Peaking Factor (PF) X ADF
3- Total Dynamic Head (TDH)
Hs = Static Head (Hs)
Hf = Loss (Hf) due to friction in force main
Length = Total equivalent length of force main and piping within pump station
Hf = Length x Friction Factor.
- Hazen-Williams C-factor of 120 shall be used for computation of friction losses.
Total Dynamic Head (TDH) = Hs + Hf
DESIGN OF THE WET WELL FOR SUBMERSIBLE PUMPS
The dimensions of the horizontal cross section of the wet well depends on the pump
size and the recommended distance between the pumps.
- Note that the diameter of the pump casing is the dimension, that decides the
length of the wet well.
- The second needed distance is the distance between the wet well wall and the
center of the pump.
- The width of the channel is usually 50 to 70 cm greater than inlet pipe
diameter, and its height is equal to the inlet pipe diameter plus 30 cm.
- The LWL is taken from the manufacturer catalog of the pump.
- The HWL is calculated from the active volume as will be indicated later.
- The active volume is the volume between the LWL and the HWL.
- The HWL is taken as the level of the invert level of the inlet pipe.
- The distance from the HWL to the top of the roof of the wet well depends on
the ground level. It is usually preferred to take the level of the top of roof the
of the wet well as 40 cm higher than the ground level.
- Determination of the wet well active volume for submersible pumps:
• The active volume in the wet well is the volume enclosed between the LWL
and the HWL.
• This volume depends on many factors such as the number of pumps, the
capacity of each pump and the raw water influent flow rate.
• The active volume (V), for constant speed pumps the minimum pump cycle
volume (Vrmin) shall be based on the formula:
:
∗
=
4
- Where:
- Time: minimum cycle time between pump starts, min.
- Q : pump discharge capacity, m3/min
- V: active volume for all pump in operation, m3
