INTRODUCTION
Excursion is a journey specially one made by people (students, Teachers,
Researchers, etc.) together for learning something outside classroom. It is
the source of immense pleasure to students and party of education too. It
sharpens the power of observation. On the other hand, education
excursion is the essential part of the fulfillment of one’s practical
knowledge. Books have given us only theoretical knowledge but
excursion gives us first hand practical knowledge. Botany is a vast
subject, the practical aspect of which is much interesting and also
essential in order to supplement our theoretical knowledgeacquired in the
class.
The botanical excursion thus presents a valuable opportunity to us
to study botany to get acquainted with the subject and to get a clear
concept about thedifferent plants and forest types. Keeping these facts in
view, the authority ofeducational institutions arranged a departmental
field study tour for the students of [Link] who opted botany as a subject in
their semester course with a view to study and collect plants specimens
and observations of vegetation innatural habitat.
The authority of the Diphu Govt. College, Diphu had organized 5
days (to & fro) tour to Botanical Survey of India (BSI), Sikkim, from
10th-14th of May, [Link] aims and objective of the tour were:-
1) To study the various type of plants that are grown in the
Sikkim regionof India.
2) Preparation and preservation of Herbarium Sheet of plants
for future references.

he explained us about the aim and objectives of the BSI. It has got three
main objectives:
1) To assist the total plants Biodiversity of our country.
2) Ex-situ conservation of endangered plants species.
3) Assessment of traditional Knowledge.
After explanation he took us to the experimental garden and he showed us
different types of orchids. We found there a wide variety of orchids. Some

3. Demonstration of Museum
We also met a senior scientist over there, Dr. Rajib
Gogoi who interacted and shared a few words with us.
He talked about the Rain water conservation system
and he handed us a poster of running a campaign “LIFE
STYLE FOR ENVIRONMENT”.
RESULT
Orchids are easily distinguished from other plants, as they share
some very evident derived characteristics or synapomorphies.
Among these are : Bilateral symmetry of the flower , many
resupinate flowers,a nearly always highly modified petals , fused
stamens and carpels and extremely small seeds.
The scent of orchids is frequently analysed by perfumers to
identify potential fragrance chemicals. Other important use of
orchids is there cultivation for the enjoyment of the flowers. Most
cultivated orchids are tropical or sub- tropical but quite a few that
grow in older climates can be found on the market. Temperate
species available at nurseries include of Ophrys apifera (bee
orchids),Gymnadenia conopsea (Fragrant orchid), and Anacamptis
pyramidalis (pyramidal orchid ) and Dactylorhiza fuchsii (common
spotted orchids)
Conclusion
Our trip lasted for two hours, so it ended at 10:30 AM. It can
be concluded that the trip was successful and we believed that
our objective was achieved. We learn something new and
beneficial for us. Our study tour was very interesting, students, all
participant interacted in a very well disciplinant manner
cooperated well with the teachers and guide.
This herbarium will help us in future. In today’s aspect there
are many species getting extinct, by making herbarium we will be
able to preserve them and keep their data safe for a long time.
Thus keeping biodiversity protected.
