Definition of window
Window can be defined as an operating system with wide range of features
Starting window
First turn on your computer you will see the window sign on the screen
Exiting window
1. Click start menu
2. Choose shut down or turn off
3. Choose shut down or turn of, the computer will automatically shut down.
Restarting your computer
Click start button right click on the shutdown choose restart
Windows screen appearance
The window screen includes desktop, start menu and taskbar.
Keys functions
Left arrow Moves the cursor one character to the left
Right arrow Moves the cursor one character to the right
Up arrow Moves the cursor one line up
Down arrow Moves the cursor one line down
Home Moves the cursor to the beginning of the line
End Moves the cursor to the end of the line
Page up scroll one screen up
Page down scroll one screen down

the most common task you perform is to work with window program.
And this is the part of windows.
Moving taskbar
1. the taskbar unlock the taskbar and drag the taskbar to a different locations
Activating start menu
1. Click ‘’left mouse’’ on the start button
2. Press ‘’windows key’’ on the keyboard.
3. Press ‘’CTRK+ESC’’
Automatically hiding taskbar
1. Right click start menu, and then point to properties
2. Click taskbar
3. Click out hide the taskbar
4. Make apply
5. Click ok

Displaying the taskbar always on top, right, left
1. Right click start button and then point to properties
2. Click taskbar
3. Click taskbar location on scree

Displaying clock on the notification area
1. Right click start button and then point to properties
2. Click taskbar
3. Click customize
4. Choose turn system icons on or off
5. In the clock box choose on or off

Moving active windows
1. Pont to the title bar
2. Drag to a different location while clicking it
3. Release the left mouse button
Resizing active windows
1. Position the pointer to the border of the window
2. When you see double header arrow drag until the size you want
Maximize Active windows
1. Click the mouse pointer on the second upper right corner of the application window.
Restore the window to its previous size
Click the restore button on the second upper corner of the application window.
Or double click on the title bar
Minimizing on use (-)
Click the (-) minimize button on the upper right corner on the application window
Closing active windows
1. Click the x (close button) in the upper right corner of the application window
2. Or double click on the application control menu box
Arranging applications icons
1. Right click the mouse on the blank space of the desktop
2. Select sort by
3. Select one of the following
. By name
. By size
. By date modified

Creating a folder
1. You can create a folder on the desktop or inside other folder.
2. Right click on the desktop
3. Choose new
4. When the new folder appears with its description highlighted, type your own
description and press enter to accept the new name folder
5. Double click on your new folder to open it
6. Right click inside the new folder and then choose new folder to create nested folder
7. Type your own description for the new folder.
Moving icons between two windows
1. Open source and distention windows
2. Click the icon you want to move in the source window
3. Drag the icon to the target window.
4. Release the window
Copying icons between two windows
1. Open source and distention windows
2. Click the icon you want to copy in the source window
3. Press and hold down the ctrl key then drag the icon in to target window
4. Release the mouse window
Running program from program command
1. Click start button
2. Point the programs
3. In the program list select the program you want to run.
Running program from run command
1. Click start button
2. Click run command
3. In the open text box type the program you want to run
4. Click ok
Creating shortcuts
1. Right click the mouse button on the desktop
2. Point new menu then select shortcut
3. Click Prowse
4. Choose desktop from the Prowse for folder
5. Click ok
6. Click the next button
7. Click the finish button

Starting window explorer
There are two ways you can start window explorer.
First way to run the explorer
1. Click start menu
2. Point programs
3. Choose accessories
4. From accessories menu choose window explorer.
Second way to run the explorer
1. Right click start menu then choose open window explorer
Displaying or hiding toolbars
1. Right click on the taskbar
2. Show or hide the toolbar you want
Setting the disk’s label (name)
1. Double click my computer icon on the desktop
2. Right click on drive(C) then choose properties
3. Click in the label text box then type the name you want to give the disk
4. Click ok.
Checking disks for error
1. Double click my computer icon on the desktop
2. Right click on drive (C)
3. Choose properties, then click tools tab
4. Click check now tab
5. Select one of the following
Automatically fix file system errors
Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors
6. Click start button
7. When the scan is finished click close twice
Selecting a range of objects
1. Select the first object of the range
2. Hold down the shift key, and click the last object of the range.
Selecting separated objects
1. Hold down the Ctrl key
2. Click on the objects you want to select
Selecting separated objects by using keyboard
1. Hold down Ctrl key, and use arrow keys to move the objects
You want to select
2. With Ctrl key still down, press spacebar to select the object

3. When you finished selecting objects, release the Ctrl key
Copying objects
1. Select the object you want to copy
2. Press Ctrl key and left click the icon and drag from its current location into a new
location
3. Release the icon when you place it where you want
Moving objects
1. Select the object you want to move
2. Slick and drag the object from its current location to a new location
Renaming objects
1. Right click on the objects you want to rename
2. Choose rename, and then type a new name
3. Press enter
Creating folder in the documents
1. Double click my computer icon on the desktop
2. Click documents
3. Choose folder
Deleting folders and files
1. Select the folder you want to delete
2. Press del key or choose delete from file menu
3. Select yes if you sure to delete the folder and its contents
Undelete objects
1. Open Home menu
2. Click undelete or right click desktop then select undo delete
Recycle bin
Window stores deleted files in the recycle bin which locates on the desktop, you can use
recycle bin to retrieve files deleted in errors, or you can empty recycle bin create more
disk space.
To retrieve deleted files or short cuts follow these steps
1. On the desktop, double click the recycle bin
2. Click the files or short cut you want to retrieve
3. On the file menu click to restore
Word pad
Windows include a program called word pad which you can use to create text based
documents such as letters, reports and so on. With word pad you can create documents of
different fonts such as bold, italic and graphics.
Starting word pad
Word pad locates in the Accessories folder, you can start in word pad in one or two ways.

Double click Drive (c) icon
Double click on the program files

Saving your document
1. Open word pad
2. Choose save document
3. In the file name text box, type your file name
4. Click save button.
Opening your document
1. Open word pad
2. Choose open command
3. In the look in drop down list box, select where your file was stored
4. In the file name box type the file you want to open
5. Click open button
Creating A new word pad
1. Open word pad
2. Select new
Formatting A text
There are two ways to format a text
First way to format a text
1. Type your text then select the text you want to be formatted
2. From Home menu select Bold, italic, color and underline.
Second way to format a text
1. Type your text then select the text you want to be formatted
2. Open Home menu then click font
3. From the following options select either of these items

Formatting a paragraph
1. Select the paragraph you want to format
2. From Home menu click paragraph and then choose the Alignments you want to
format, such us : left, right, and center
Setting tab stop
1. Open Home menu
2. In the paragraph select tabs
3. In the tab stop position type where you want to stop and click set
4. Repeat step 1-3-4 to set other tab stop
5. When you finished setting tab, click ok.
Note:
To delete a tab stop, open Home menu
In the paragraph select tabs then choose clear all
Inserting picture in TO word pad
1. Open Home menu
2. Select insert object
3. Click Microsoft graph chart
4. Click insert and click choose
Cutting a text
1. Select the text you want to cut
2. Open home menu or
3. Choose cut or Ctrl + X
4. Place the cursor where you want to insert the text
5. Open home menu
6. Choose past or press Ctrl + V
Copying a text
1. Select the text you want t copy
2. Open home menu
3. Select copy or press Ctrl+ c
4. Place the cursor where you want to put the text
5. Open home menu select past or press Ctrl + V
Searching a text
1. In the document click where you want to start your search
2. Open home menu and select find and enter the text you want to find in the find what
box
3. To find additional instance of the same text click find next

Replacing text
1. In the document click where you want to start replacing text
2. Open home menu and then select replace
3. In the find box what box type the text you want to find
4. In the replace what box type the replacement box
5. To replace all text click replace all
6. To replace individually click replace.
Understanding the control panel
The control panel is special folder that contains many applications, and
enables you to control the way window looks and the function on your pc
Starting the control panel
1. Click start button
2. Choose control panel
Setting the date and time
The date and time items in the control panel enable you to select your pc’s current system
of date and time
1. In the control panel select date and time
2. Click change date and time tab
3. Set the date and time
4. Click apply and the click ok.
Searching files and pictures
1. Click start menu
2. Select search for program and files
3. Enter the program or picture then press enter
Changing the desktop
There are two ways you can change the desktop
First way of changing the desktop
1. Click start menu click control panel
2. Double click display
3. Click personalization
4. Under wallpaper click on of the options
5. Click apply, and then click ok
Second way
1. Right click on the desktop
2. Select personalize
3. Under wallpaper click on of the options
4. Click apply an then click ok

Screen saver
1. Click the start menu/ control panel
2. Double click display
3. Click screen saver tab
4. Under the screen saver tab select 3D text or marquee
5. Choose settings
6. In the text box, type your title click ok.
Changing the mouse handed
1. Click start button/ control panel
2. Double click mouse icon
Under the button configuration, select switch primary and secondary buttons
3. Click apply
4. Click ok
Using the calculator
1. Click start menu
2. Select programs and then choose accessories
3. Select calculator
4. Open view menu select either standard calculator or scientific calculator
5. Use the calculator as you need
Starting ms-paint program
Ms-paint program is a special program that locates in accessories folder and has special
uses such as drawing and coloring
How to start ms-paint
1. Click start menu
2. Select programs
3. Choose accessories choose paint
To put a graph create in ms-paint on the desktop
1. Start ms-paint program
2. Make a picture and format your picture as you wanted
3. Save your picture
4. Open file menu set as wallpaper centered
5. Choose the ms-paint program
