Course Objective
• Familiarize student with mechanics and limit states design
procedures of basic RC members (solid slabs, beams, and
columns).
• Focus on basic members used in typical RC skeleton
construction, i.e. solid slabs, beams, and columns.
• Emphasize member design strategy and follow practical and
code considerations related to development and detailing of
reinforcement and member sizing.
• Provide students with practical analysis and design tools that
are currently used by the design codes for RC structures, and
enable them to improve their design skills by providing
detailed calculation for practical problems.

Progress Sheet (Tentative)

Assoc. Prof. Ahmed Elansary CIS 503 Reinforced Concrete Design I

What is Concrete?
Concrete
Fine aggregate (sand) + Coarse aggregate (eg, gravel, limestone) +
cement + water + air + admixtures.
Admixtures are materials added to concrete either before or during mixing to change some of its
properties, such as workability, curing temperature range, set time, color, … etc..

Concrete has high compressive strength and very low tensile strength

Assoc. Prof. Ahmed Elansary CIS 503 Reinforced Concrete Design I

What is Reinforced Concrete (RC)?
Reinforced concrete

Rebars + Concrete = RC

Concrete resists compressive stresses

while the reinforcing steel resists tensile stresses.
Reinforcing steel can also resist compression (doubly reinforced beam, columns)

Assoc. Prof. Ahmed Elansary CIS 503 Reinforced Concrete Design I

What is Reinforced Concrete (RC)?
RC Casting Steps:
1. Formwork
2. Reinforcing Steel Cage
3. Concrete mixing and casting
4. Curing
5. Removal of Formwork

Assoc. Prof. Ahmed Elansary CIS 503 Reinforced Concrete Design I

Where should we put Rebars?
Concrete cracks due to tension → steel is required

Why Reinforce with Steel?
• Concrete and steel bond together very well with no slippage, thus
they act together to resist loads.

• Concrete and steel expand and contract together as they have

almost the same coefficient of thermal expansion (steel: 6.5x10-6
and concrete 5.5x10-6)

• Low tensile strength of concrete is compensated by high tensile

strength of steel.

• Brittle behavior of concrete is transformed into a ductile behavior

with steel providing sufficient warning before failure.

• Concrete protects steel from exposure to air and moisture to prevent

corrosion.

• Concrete also provides fire protection to steel and buckling

confinement.
Assoc. Prof. Ahmed Elansary CIS 503 Reinforced Concrete Design I
Advantages of RC
• Inexpensive local material (sand, gravel and water)

• Limited expensive material (steel and cement)

• High compressive strength relative to cost

• Low maintenance

• High fire resistance

• Flexible: can be cast in different shapes (beams, arches, architectural

facades, … etc.)

• Does not require highly skilled workers

• Concrete structures are strong and sound

• High durability and long service life

Assoc. Prof. Ahmed Elansary CIS 503 Reinforced Concrete Design I

Disadvantages of RC
• Low tensile strength (reinforcing steel is required)
• Forms are required to hold the concrete until it hardens. Formwork
could be expensive
• Long construction time
• RC members are relatively large (compared to structural steel
members)
• RC members are heavy adding more dead load on the structure
• Low strength relative to unit weight
• Concrete properties can vary depending on mixing and curing
• RC member undergo shrinkage and creep deformations that should
be taken into account during design process.
