Positioning of the code matters:
• Next to the line-means you can find it in the line
• Against a vertical pen line means you can find it in the section
• At the end means it is a problem throughout
It is important for all teachers to intimate their learners of these codes so
learners can
correct their work independently.
Quality teacher marking – two stars and a wish.
This should be used for marking Big Write. Developmental comments raise
standards as
they help pupils to understand the main purpose of their learning and
thereby grasp what
they need to do in order to improve. Grades/scores and a comment do not
raise standards.
Using 2 stars and a wish should be laid out at the end of the piece of work as
follows:
! S -“Strength” or “Star” - positive comment which relates to the
learning objectives /success criteria
! S – “Strength” or “Star” second positive comment which relates to
the learning objective / success criteria
! W – “Wish” or “What next” one area where the success criteria
was not met / or a suggestion /question to encourage further
thinking.
The strengths and next steps should relate to the success criteria set for
every 6 written
pieces of work given.
Quality marking by students - Peer and self-assessment using a success
criteria.
This can be useful activity if done in an environment where students have
been taught to
do this in a safe environment. Students should be trained to use them. This
allows
learners to gain a better understanding of where they are, where you need
to be and what
they need to do to get there. This could be done in a GREEN coloured pencil
to highlight
a child marking and not a teacher. This marking strategy can be used in
paired or group
work. This should be done twice a term.
Homework
All learners shall receive homework three times a week, excluding daily
reading and
spelling practice. Homework must be a constructive learning experience and
should
complement what was taught in class for reinforcement. Homework should
consist of exercises
to be completed by the child as well as exercises to be completed jointly by
the
parent and the child such as projects, research and preparing for an oral
presentation.
All homework is expected to be marked promptly and feedback must be
given to pupils.
Feedback may take a variety of forms:
! Written feedback on homework sheets
! Oral feedback
! Class discussion about the work
Teachers should specify the deadline for completion and monitors any child
who does not
meet such deadlines then notify the Academic Coordinator of such child. The
teacher and
Academic Coordinator shall discuss strategies with the child’s parents to
ensure the child
does homework.
