OFF-GRID SOLAR INSTALLATION COMPUTATION

1. ASSESS YOUR ENERGY NEEDS
Calculate Daily Energy Consumption
Daily Energy (Wh) = Σ(Power Rating (W) × Usage Hours (h) × Quantity)

Appliance Power (W) Quantity Hours Used Daily Energy

(h/day) (Wh)
Refrigerator 70 1 24 1680
Laptop 40 2 6 480
LED Bulbs 9 10 5 450
Television 50 1 3 150
W.M. 300 1 1 300
Electric Fans 25 2 8 400
Smartphones 10 3 2 60
Wi-fi Router 10 1 24 240
Electric Kettle 1200 1 0.5 600
Electric Stove 1500 1 1 1500

Consumption = 1680 + 480 + 450 + 150 + 300 + 400 + 60 + 240 + 600 +

1500 Total Daily Energy Consumption = 5860 Wh/day
 Add Safety Margin of 25%
Adjusted Daily Energy = 5860 Wh/day × 1.25 = 7325 Wh/day
2. DETERMINE SOLAR PANEL REQUIREMENTS
 Peak Sun Hours (PSH) = 4 hours/day
 System Efficiency = 80% (0.8)
 Required Solar Power (W) = Adjusted Daily Energy / (PSH × System
Efficiency)
 Required Solar Power (W) = 7325 Wh/day / (4h/day × 0.8)
 Required Solar Power (W) = 2297 W
 Number of Solar Panels = Required Solar Power / Power per Panel (550W)
 No. of Panels = 2297 W / 550W ≈ 4.18 ≈ 5 panels
3. SELECT BATTERY STORAGE
 Days of Autonomy = 3 days
 Depth of Discharge (DoD) = 90% (0.90)
 Battery Capacity (Wh) = (Adjusted Daily Energy × Days of Autonomy) /
DoD
 Battery Capacity (Wh) = (7325 Wh/day × 3 days) / 0.90
 Battery Capacity (Wh) = 24416.67 Wh
 For a 48V system:
 Battery Capacity (Ah) = Battery Capacity (Wh) / System Voltage
 Battery Capacity (Ah) = 24416.67 Wh / 48V = 508.68 Ah
 Battery Selection:
 Choose 2 × 48V 250Ah LiFePO4 batteries in parallel

4. CHOOSE A CHARGE CONTROLLER

a. Determine Charge Controller Type
 PWM (Pulse Width Modulation): Cheaper, suitable for smaller systems.
 MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) - More efficient, especially in
systems with higher voltage panels or varying sunlight conditions.
Using MPPT charge controller (recommended)
b. Calculate Required Charge Controller Capacity
 Charge Controller Rating (A) = (Total Solar Power (W) / System Voltage) ×
1.25
 Charge Controller Rating (A) = (550W × 5 panels) / 48V × 1.25
 Charge Controller Rating (A) = 71.87A
 Select an 80A MPPT charge controller

5. SELECT AN INVERTER
 Total Load (W) = Total Daily Energy Consumption (Wh/day) / Peak Sun
Hours
 Total Load (W) = 5860 Wh/day / 4h/day = 1465W (Continuous)
 Choose an inverter with a 1.5kW continuous rating and 3kW surge
capacity
