UNIT-2

Codes and Standards

Syllabus
ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessels codes, ASME pressure piping Design Codes, ISO Codes, &
standards, Other Codes and standards.

Piping Standards

Piping standards define application design and construction rules and requirements for piping
components as flanges, elbows, tees, valves etc.
A standard has a limited scope defined by the standard.

For mandatory of engineering practices and requirements.

• A set of technical definitions, specifications, guidelines.

• It clarifies How something should be done.

• ASTM standards, ISO standards, etc.

Piping Codes

Piping codes define the requirements of engineering, design, fabrication, use of materials, tests
and inspection of pipes and piping systems.
Each code has a limited jurisdiction defined by the scope of the code.

It has limited jurisdiction by the code/ a group of general rules/ systematic procedures for design,
fabrication, installation and inspection.

• A code is standard that has been adopted by one or more governmental bodies.

• It can be adopted into law.

• It clarifies what needs to be done.

• Building code, ASME boiler and vessel codes, etc.

Dimensional Standards:

They Provide configuration Control information for components.

Main Purpose of Dimensional STD is to assure similar components manufactures by

different supplier will be physically interchangeable.

Mainly this document gives dimensions of various parts.

Mostly Used/ Recommended:

Recommended practices prepared by professional group/ committee for good

engineering practices. Individual company also can develop their personal practice guide to
follow.

Each country has its own codes and standards. But normally American National
standards are most widely used all over the world.

In India, other than American standards, British Standards and Indian Standards are
also used for the design and selection if equipment and piping system.

ASME B31 Piping Codes

Piping codes developed by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME):

B31.1 Power Piping

Piping typically found in electric power generating stations, in industrial and institutional
plants, geothermal heating systems and central and district heating and cooling plants.

B31.2 Fuel gas Piping

It is used for gas piping designing system. Now it is used separately as NFPA CODE

NFPA-National Fuel Protection Association = NFPA Z223.1 or NFPA -54
