Assignment 7: Personal Values Influence Ethical Choices

Moral intelligence as defined by Reece and Reece (2019), is the mental capacity to

determine how universal human principles should be applied to personal values, goals, and actions.

Universal human principles such as integrity, compassion, responsibility, and forgiveness

(Kalman, 2019) are said to be the key ingredients that greatly influence one’s personal and

leadership success. In fact, Fred Kiel, co-founder of KRW International Inc., quoted that “We find

that in these four, integrity will yield trust from the workforce; responsibility will inspire;

forgiveness will promote innovation; and caring [compassion] will gain retention” (Kalman,

2019). Similar to a personal success, integrity yields trust from yourself; having a sense of self-

confidence, responsibility to your own needs, wants, and goals sparks consistency, forgiveness on

your own self leads to better self-acceptance and self-improvement, and caring for your own

strengthens your physical and mental well-being.

Moreover, applying moral intelligence, or "doing the right thing," makes you more

effective professionally. For example, being honest and open with employees makes them more

committed to working hard for the organization (Chron, 2020). Run your professional life using

the same principles as your personal life, and you will also find your career more satisfying. Thus,

when one has a strong sense of moral intelligence that person is likely to lead not just personal

success but also organizational success. As what Kalman (2019) said, moral intelligence means

knowing how to lead with these traits. Doing so may not only improve the soft success of a leader,

but the bottom line for the organization he or she leads.
