Project READCOM: School-Base Remedial Reading
Narrative Report on ReadCom Session
A ReadCom session was conducted to enhance students' reading comprehension, focusing on helping them read
accurately, fluently, and with understanding. The session aimed to equip students with effective reading strategies to
support their academic growth across various subjects.
The session began with an introduction to the importance of reading comprehension. Students were encouraged to see
how reading with understanding could enrich their learning experience. Key strategies, such as identifying main ideas,
recognizing supporting details, and using context clues, were demonstrated in a way that was accessible and relevant
to their reading level.
During the session, students participated in timed reading exercises, gradually increasing their reading speed to
develop fluency. Emphasis was placed on balancing speed with comprehension, ensuring that students were not only
reading faster but also fully understanding the content. Most students showed strong reading abilities, but a few had
specific needs. One student demonstrated steady progress as a slower reader, taking more time to process text
accurately. Another student read with ease yet encountered challenges in retaining the meaning of what was read,
requiring additional guidance to build comprehension skills.
Throughout the session, constructive feedback was provided, focusing on strengths and areas for improvement.
Additional support was offered to these students to ensure that everyone felt encouraged and motivated to progress at
their own pace.
At the end of the session, a brief assessment measured students' progress, showing a noticeable improvement in both
reading fluency and comprehension. This indicated that students gained both skills and confidence.
Overall, this ReadCom session proved to be an effective step toward enhancing literacy and comprehension skills,
reinforcing the importance of regular practice and tailored guidance. It highlighted the value of addressing each
student's unique learning needs to help them reach their full potential as confident, capable readers.
Measurements
1. Initial Observations: You observed each student's reading ability, identifying areas like fluency and
comprehension. Through these observations, you noted students who were slower readers and those who
could read but struggled with comprehension.
2. Timed Reading Exercises: These exercises helped you measure each student’s reading speed, allowing you
to track improvement over time. This approach was also effective in observing how students balanced speed
with comprehension.

3. Progress Assessment: At the end of the session, you conducted a brief assessment to measure individual
progress in both reading fluency and comprehension. This provided concrete feedback on how each student
had improved.
4. Feedback Sessions: By providing students with constructive feedback during and after the session, you
assessed their understanding and encouraged self-reflection. This feedback helped you gauge their
comprehension of the content.
Implementation
1. Demonstration of Reading Strategies: You taught key strategies such as identifying main ideas, recognizing
supporting details, and using context clues. This was an essential part of the session to help students
understand and apply these tools to their reading.
2. Use of Diverse Reading Materials: Incorporating books, journals, and videos provided a variety of reading
experiences that kept students engaged and exposed them to different types of content.
3. Timed Reading Exercises: These exercises were implemented progressively to build students' fluency while
keeping comprehension as a priority. By gradually increasing speed, you helped students become more
comfortable with reading at a faster pace.
4. Targeted Support for Individual Needs: Recognizing the varying abilities of students, you offered
additional support where needed, particularly for the slower reader and the student needing comprehension
assistance.
5. Constructive Feedback: You gave personalized feedback during and after activities, highlighting each
student's strengths and providing suggestions for improvement. This approach encouraged students to
recognize their growth areas in a supportive environment.
