Online Seminars / Trainings

1. Title: The Future in Focus: Innovating for Sustainable Growth through Strategic ESG
Leadership (Attendee)

Date and Time of Event: November 11, 2024, 1:30 PM – 4:00 PM

Where: Online (via Zoom) by UPLB College of Economics and Management

Summary of Seminar:

The webinar hosted by the UPLB College of Economics and Management highlighted the
vital role of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles in fostering
sustainable growth and innovation. The event featured Cathrene P. Amante, Technology
Transfer Officer at the UPLB Technology Transfer and Business Development Office, and
Tita D. Puangco, CEO and Chairperson of TDP Management Consultancy Services, who
shared their expertise and real-world insights on ESG strategies.

The discussion focused on how organizations can embed ESG principles into their operations
to drive long-term profitability and resilience. The speakers emphasized a shift in
perspective—from treating sustainability as an ethical obligation to leveraging it as a
strategic asset. Key topics included adopting green technologies for resource optimization,
implementing sustainable supply chain practices to mitigate risks, and cultivating a culture of
innovation and continuous learning. Through case studies, the tangible benefits of ESG-
focused initiatives were showcased, such as improved profit margins and enhanced
operational efficiency. The speakers stressed the importance of aligning corporate objectives
with global sustainability goals, ensuring that businesses contribute positively to the
environment and society while staying competitive in a rapidly changing business
environment.

Lessons Learned:

As a civil engineering student, the webinar highlighted a crucial lesson: sustainability is not
just an ethical consideration but a strategic necessity in building resilient and impactful
projects. Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles emphasize the importance
of incorporating green technologies, sustainable resource management, and innovative
practices into engineering solutions. This aligns with the broader goals of civil engineering to
create structures that are not only functional but also environmentally responsible and
socially beneficial. For students like me, the key takeaway is to view sustainability as a core
element of design and construction, ensuring that the infrastructure we develop contributes
positively to both communities and the planet.

On a personal level, the session reinforced the idea that small, conscious efforts in any field
can lead to significant, tangible benefits. Whether as an engineer or as an individual, adopting
practices that minimize environmental harm, promote social well-being, and ensure ethical
governance reflects a responsibility toward a better future. The emphasis on fostering
innovation and continuous learning is a reminder that growth, both personal and professional,
requires adapting to change and finding creative solutions to global challenges. This lesson
motivates me to think critically about the long-term impact of my decisions, both in my
career and in everyday life.

2. Title: The Blueprint of Life: Where Biology Meets Technology (Attendee)

Date and Time of Event: November 16, 2024, 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Where: Online (via MS Teams) by the College of Information and Communications

Technology, West Visayas State University

Summary of Seminar:

The webinar explored how technological advancements have revolutionized biological

research and applications. Prof. Julie Ann Salido, Vice President for Research & Extensions
at Aklan State University, and Demboy Gumboc, a Microbiology and Molecular Biology
Laboratory Technician at West Visayas State University, shared their expertise on the
transformative synergy between biology and technology.

The discussion began with an overview of traditional biological research methods, where
Prof. Salido emphasized the inefficiencies of manual processes in diagnostics and vaccine
development, noting their time-consuming and less precise nature. The focus then shifted to
modern tools like Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), next-generation sequencing, and AI-
powered diagnostics, which Mr. Gumboc highlighted as innovations enabling rapid DNA
amplification, genome mapping, and real-time result interpretation. A key example was the
accelerated development of COVID-19 vaccines, where computational tools and mRNA
technology significantly reduced the production and distribution timeline. The webinar
concluded by emphasizing the profound impact of these technologies in addressing global
challenges and their potential to drive future breakthroughs in biology and beyond.

Lessons Learned:

As a student, this webinar demonstrated how the integration of technology into biology is
transforming research and practical applications, especially in critical areas like diagnostics
and vaccine development. For someone pursuing science or engineering, it’s clear that
understanding cutting-edge tools like PCR, genome sequencing, and AI diagnostics is
essential. These technologies significantly reduce time and improve accuracy, showcasing the
importance of continuous learning to stay updated with advancements. As a future
professional, embracing this synergy between biology and technology can open doors to
solving complex problems efficiently, whether in healthcare, environmental engineering, or
biotechnology.

On a personal level, the webinar underscored how innovations in science and technology
have a direct impact on humanity, as seen in the rapid development of COVID-19 vaccines.
It’s a reminder of how global challenges require interdisciplinary solutions, collaboration,
and a commitment to innovation. For me as an individual, this lesson highlights the need to
be curious and adaptable, understanding that even small contributions in the fields of science
and technology can lead to breakthroughs that improve lives worldwide.

1. Title: 3D Printing Training: Introduction to 3D Printing (Attendee)

Date and Time of Event: November 21, 2024, 11:30 AM – 12:00 PM

Where: 5th Floor (FTIC) 3D Printing Room, FEU Engineering Building

Summary of Training:

In the training, we were warmly welcomed by our instructor, who provided a clear and
straightforward overview of the 3D printing process. He began by outlining the essential do's
and don'ts of 3D printing, emphasizing safety and proper handling of the equipment. He also
explained the specific rules governing when and how students are allowed to use the 3D
printers, ensuring everyone understood the guidelines. The session then covered the basic
tools, software, and procedures involved in 3D printing, from designing a model to preparing
it for printing. We also learned about different types of materials used in the process, such as
PLA and ABS. To make the training even more engaging, the instructor showcased live
examples of models being 3D printed, providing us with a hands-on understanding of the
entire process. This combination of theory and practice helped us gain a deeper appreciation
for the capabilities and potential of 3D printing technology.

Lessons Learned:

From this training, I gained a solid understanding of the 3D printing process, including the
importance of following specific guidelines and rules for safe and effective use of the
equipment. I learned that proper preparation, including designing the right model and
selecting the appropriate materials, is crucial for a successful print. The instructor’s live
demonstrations helped me visualize how theoretical knowledge translates into practice,
showing me firsthand how models are built layer by layer. Additionally, I realized the
significance of safety precautions and the need for careful handling of 3D printers to avoid
damage or errors. Overall, the session reinforced the importance of precision and attention to
detail in 3D printing, while also opening my eyes to the endless possibilities of this
