1. From the PPSTs, the Southeast Asia Teachers Competency Standards and the TEDx videos that you viewed, what
competencies does a great teacher possess?

The SEA-TCF emphasizes four key areas for great teachers: strong subject knowledge, effective
teaching skills, community engagement, and continuous professional development. Experts like
Terronez and Seanz highlight additional qualities such as passion for learning, empathy, creativity, and
a positive influence. By combining these essential skills and qualities, teachers can significantly impact
education in Southeast Asia.

2. Are these competencies limited only to professional competencies?

No, it is not limited only to professional competencies but also in addition to professional skills, a
teacher's character plays a vital role in effective teaching. While subject knowledge and teaching
methods are essential, a teacher's personality and values can significantly impact student learning and
development. A teacher who is not only knowledgeable but also kind, patient, and inspiring can create
a positive learning environment that motivates students to reach their full potential.

3. For a teacher to be great, is it enough to possess the professional competencies to plan a lesson, execute a lesson plan,
manage a class, assess learning, compute and report grades? Explain your answer.

No, just having the skills to plan lessons, manage a class, and assess learning is not enough to
be a great teacher. A great teacher connects with students, creates a welcoming classroom, inspires
learning, and adjusts to different student needs. They also set a good example, encourage thinking and
teamwork, and always try to improve themselves.

4. For a teacher to be great, which is more important – personal qualities or professional competencies?
I believe personal qualities and professional competencies are equally important for a teacher. A
teacher cannot truly excel without both. Personal qualities, such as strong communication and
interpersonal skills, enable a teacher to understand and address students' needs. At the same time,
professional competencies ensure that the teacher has a solid grasp of the subject matter and can
effectively share this knowledge with students. Therefore, both are essential for a teacher to succeed,
as they complement each other and form a complete package that every teacher should strive to
develop.

5. Who are the teachers that we remember most?

We remember teachers for their greatness, though not all, but often for the positive impact they
leave on us. Many believe that at least one teacher significantly influences a student’s life, and this is
true. From the moment we enter school, teachers become role models who shape us into who we are
today. Influential teachers approach their role with compassion, kindness, and great effort to share
knowledge and wisdom. We remember them because they inspire us to grow and strive to become the
best version of ourselves. In reality, we don’t recall every single lesson taught in the classroom, but we
do remember how they transformed and influenced our lives.

Write Action Research Prompts

1. OBSERVE In assisting my Resource Teacher, I observed that personal traits such as good listener, creative, sense
of humor and professional competencies like having a strong understanding of the subject and continuously improving
to show a passion for teaching. Not all students may have reliable access to the internet or devices were at least/not
displayed and as a result, students were/class sometimes missed the schedule for various reasons, and lessons were
skipped, making it difficult to regain interest.
2.
2. REFLECT The lack of these personal traits and professional competencies (mentioned in # 1) may caused by
insufficient support or resources.

3. PLAN I would like to address this problem (mentioned in # 2) by conducting an action research on
Identifying and implementing strategies to improve student engagement and access to resources.

4. ACT
a.) The main objective in my action research is to improve student engagement and ensure equal access to resources,
while enhancing both personal traits and professional competencies in teaching.

b.) My specific research questions are:

- How can I improve student engagement despite challenges such as limited access to technology and internet?
- What strategies can be implemented to ensure all students have reliable access to learning resources?
- How can I foster the development of essential personal traits and professional competencies in my teaching practice?

c.) To answer my specific questions, I will:

- Conduct surveys or interviews with students to gather feedback on their learning experiences and challenges they
face regarding access to resources.
- Observe and document different teaching strategies to assess their effectiveness in engaging students and ensuring
equal access.
- Collaborate with colleagues and seek expert advice on best practices for improving teaching techniques and resource
management in an online or hybrid environment.
- Implement and test different strategies to improve student participation and track the progress over a specific period
of time.
While observing Mrs. Lovelyn Sacurin's class, I observed that she
was very knowledgeable and skilled in her subject. She used three
languages and spoke in a calm, soothing manner, which made the lesson
both comfortable and engaging. Even though the introduction to the topic
was informal, she managed it well and quickly shared her expertise with
the class, helping us learn from her insights. Although the group
members did not present in a formal manner, we still learned a great deal
just by listening to them. I aspire to speak and teach as effectively as Mrs.
Sacurin does in the future. Her style of presenting lessons is truly
remarkable.
