Community Extension Services (CES) are programs that connect the college with the surrounding
community. They typically involve students, faculty, and staff working together to provide a variety of
services that address the needs of the community. There are many things that can be done at CES
programs. You can do a project such as tree planting, feeding program, teaching children, cleaning and
segregating garbage, etc. Anything can be done as long as we know it will help people and the
development of a community.
Our chosen project is to teach Mathematics in the 8th grade of Barangay San Roque, Mercedes,
Camarines Norte. Our participants are only ten grade 8 students. We agreed on this because our course is
BSEd Major in Mathematics. And it depends on the Course what projects are suitable and should be
carried out. While we were making the proposal, I realized that this kind of project is not easy because
there is already a lot to consider in planning. It still needs to be approved to be implemented. It is also not
easy to carry out such a project because it is necessary to release a sufficient budget just to meet the
needs. We are always canvassing when we are going to buy things and for snacks so we know if it will fit
into our budget or not. I made an observation while one of my group mates was teaching. You must have
courage and self-confidence. In short, you must be prepared and study what you are going to teach. You
must be active and willing to teach, so you must be happy in what you are doing so that even if it is
difficult, the enjoyment is there. You must have different teaching approaches to get the attention of your
students because we do not know the phase of each student. There may be more slow learners than fast
learners or more fast learners than slow learners. Or there are outstanding and average students. Well, that
can be monitored as long as you know how to handle a student. But when I was the one teaching the
children, I admit that I had a hard time because I didn't prepare much. I didn't handle them well because
their phase was mixed. There are fast and slow learners and there are also outstanding and average
students so it is difficult to keep up especially if you are not very prepared. Well, it is part of experience as
a future teacher. I will use this as a guide in my Internship and Practice Teaching next school year.
Overall, Community Extension Service (CES) is to bridge the gap between an institution and its
surrounding community. They achieve this by identifying needs, knowledge transfer, collaboration, and
development. It allows the institution to give back to the community and the community to benefit from
the institution's resources and expertise.
