DETERMINING THE TOTAL MAXIMUM EXPECTED LOAD USING

APPROPRIATE DIVERSITY FACTOR

MAX EXPECTED LOAD = DIVERSITY FACTOR X DESIGNED LOAD

The diversity factor depends on the branch circuit application purpose and area.

Generally the diversity factor taken to be for

LIGHTING CIRCUIT = 0.6 – 0.8

GENERAL SOCKET = 0.3

SPCEIFIC SOCKET = 0.9 OR 1

DESIGNED LOAD

For each incandescent lamp is taken 60w

6 incandescent lamps x 60 w = 600w

4 fluorescent lamps x 36w= 144w

ELECTRICAL AND COMPUTER ENGINERRING Page 7

Project on Electrical Installation Design

For each general purpose socket outlet is taken 200w

8 Socket outlets, 220v x 5 A = 1.1kw

1 special socket outlet, 220v x 25A = 5.5 kW

FOR LIGHTING CIRCUIT = 2 X 10 A X 220V = 4400 W = 4.40 KW

FOR GENERAL PURPOSE SOCKET = 1 X 16 A X 220V = 3520 W = 3.520KW

FOR SPCEIFIC PURPOSE SOCKET = 1 X 25 A X 220V =5500 W = 5.5 KW

TOTAL DESIGNED LOAD = 13.42 KW

MAX EXPECTED LOAD

FOR LIGHTING CIRCUIT = 4.40 KW X 0.6 = 2.64KW

FOR GENERAL PURPOSE SOCKET = 3.520 KW X 0.3 = 1.056KW

FOR SPCEIFIC PURPOSE SOCKET = 5.5 KW X 1 = 5.5 KW

TOTAL EXPECTED LOAD = 9.196 KW

NOTE:-

Since the total expected load is 9.196 KW which is greater than 8 kw, therefore the required
supply voltage is three phase (380 v).

CONSIDER

In = Maximum normal current.

Ib =current setting for circuit breaker of fuse (design current).

Iz =current carrying capacity of the conductor.

TO DETERMINE THE FEEDER CABLE SIZE AND CHOOSE SWITCHABLE

CIRCUIT BREAKER

Considering of power factor =0.8 for the main feeder cable

ELECTRICAL AND COMPUTER ENGINERRING Page 8

Project on Electrical Installation Design

Ib = (9.196 x 1000)/ √3 x 380 x 0.8

Ib = 17.46 A

In>Ib. this value may be taken from IEE or EEPCO regulations.

From Table 9.1. 25 A rated circuit breaker can be selected for protection

In = 25 Amp

There for the maximum MAIN CIRCUIT BREAKER size that can be chosen is 32A available
in the market.

LET AS ASSUME
 Average ambient temperature is 350C

 General purpose p.v.c Type of insulation.

And from Table A.4 correction factor for 350C = 0.94 Ca = 0.94.

Therefore the required cable rating is:-

Iz = In/ca x cg

= 25 /0.94 = 26.59 A

From EBCS-10 Table B.1 reference method 4(enclosed in conduit in thermal installation
including wall) our Iz is 25A, but we took the next value available in the table which is
32 A. Therefore 6 mm2 conductor which carries 32 A.

 Testing for Voltage drop = (mV/Am) * I * L

From table B.2 voltage drop for 6mm2 conductor size = 7.3mv/Am

maximum current through cables = 17.46A

Voltage drop on cable = 7.3mv/Am * 17.46 A * 10 m = 1.274V

WHERE 10M= IS LONG RUN METER FROM THE POLE TO THE KILOWWATT
METER

Maximum allowable voltage drop = 2.5% of 380 V = 9.5V.

Since the actual voltage drop is less than from the allowable maximum
voltage drop; therefore selected feeder cable size is 6 mm
