Q1. Describe briefly the geographic location of India in Asia. What is the significance of India’s
geographic location?
 India is located in the South Asia covering a very large area of land and water,
making it world's 7th largest country.
 India is located at the terminal of the Indian Ocean.
 India's position on Indian Ocean is very helpful for its trade with European countries
and other countries of the world.
 In the north, it is surrounded by the Himalayan range which is home for many rivers
and protects India from cold northern winds.
 The Latitudinal extent of India is 8°4'N to 37 °6'N.
 The Longitudinal extent of India is 68°7'E to 97°25'E.
 Tropic of cancer divides the country into almost two equal halves.

So, the geographical location of India has played a very important role in the growth and
development of India.

Ans. The longitudinal extent of India is 68°7 E and 97° 25 E. implications-


1) The longitudinal extent affects the local time for different states in our country.
2) Since 30° meridian or pass from east to west and earth takes two hours to cover them so
there is the time lag of two hours as we move from east to west.

Q3. What is the latitudinal extent of India? How does it affect India?
Ans. The latitudinal extent of India is 6∘4′N to 37∘6′N. It influences our lives in the following ways:

 The Tropic of Cancer divides the country into two equal parts. Thus, India is situated in
tropical and temperate zones.
 The northern part of India has high annual range of temperature whereas the southern
part has low annual range of temperature.
 The latitudinal extent influences the duration of the day and night as we move from south
to north.

and its current situation.
Ans. The southernmost point of the India's territory is located is Indira point with a latitude and
longitude coordinate of about 6.78°N 93.825°E. Indira point is a village located in Union
territory of India Andaman and Nicobar Island.
The southernmost point of the mainland territory of India is Kanyakumari with the coordinate
of about 8.084°N 77.546°E. It is located in the India state of Tamil Nadu

Q5. Why India is called a Subcontinent? Write any three points


Ans. India is called a subcontinent because of the following reasons:

It is a distinct geographic unit separated from the Asian continent by the majestic Himalayas
and its extensions.
It has its own culture as distinct from the rest of Asia.
The climate of Indian subcontinent is characterized by monsoon type of climate.

Q6. How has the long coastline been beneficial to India?


 The Trans Indian Ocean routes which connect the countries of Europe in the West and the
countries of East Asia provide a strategic central location to India.
 The Deccan Peninsula protrudes into the Indian Ocean, thus helping India to establish close
contact with West Asia, Africa and Europe from the western coast and with Southeast and
East Asia from the eastern coast.
 No other country has a long coastline on the Indian Ocean as India has and indeed, it is
India’s eminent position in the Indian Ocean which justifies the naming of an Ocean after it.

Ans: (a) The Indian landmass has a central location between the east and the west Asia.
India is a southward extension of the Asian continent.
(b) The Trans Indian Ocean routes which connect the countries of Europe in the west and
the countries of East Asia provide a strategic central location to India.
(c) The Deccan Peninsula protrudes into the Indian Ocean, thus helping India to
establish close contact with west Asia, Africa and Europe from the western coast and
southeast and East Asia from the eastern coast.
Q8. The below map shows the important geographical line which pass through India. These are
standard meridian and tropic of cancer. The map also shows the eastern, western, northern
and southern part of India along with neighbouring countries.
