Suppose that we have two more events A & B,
event A is a set of number/s greater than 5

and the event B is a set number/s divisible by 3

SIMPLE An event is simple if there is
only one outcome.
EVENTS
Example:

An event is compound if it
has more than one outcome.
COMPOUND
EVENTS Example:
B = {3 , 6}
E = { 1 , 3 ,5 }
UNION AND INTERSECTION OF TWO EVENTS
THE UNION OF TWO EVENTS
The Union of two sets, denoted A ∪ B (“A union B”), is the set of all members
contained in either A or B or both. We can thick of the union of two sets as the
entire Venn diagram:

is the event E ∪ F
Example: E = { 1 , 3 ,5 } and
F = { 4 , 5 ,6 }
E ∪ F = { 1 , 3 , 4 , 5 ,6 }
THE INTERSECTION OF TWO EVENTS
The Intersection of two sets, denoted A ∩ B (“A intersect B”), is the set of all
members contained in both A and B. We can thick of the intersection of two sets
as the overlap in the Venn diagram:

Example: E = { 1 , 3 ,5 } and
F = { 4 , 5 ,6 }

EXAMPLE 3:
Consider that we have the following events.
A = { 2 , 3 ,6 } C = { 1 , 3 ,6 , 8 }
B = {2 , 4 } D = { 1 , 3 ,5 , 7 }

2. A ∩ C 5. B ∩ C
3. C ∩ D
SOLUTION:
1. A ∪ B = { 2 , 3 ,6 } ∪ {2 , 4 }
= {2 , 3 , 4 , 6}
2. A ∩ C = { 2 , 3 ,6 } ∩ { 1 , 3 ,6 , 8 }
= {3 , 6}
3. C ∩ D = { 1 , 3 ,6 , 8 } ∩ { 1 , 3 ,5 , 7 }
= {1 , 3}
4. A ∪ C = { 2 , 3 ,6 } ∪ { 1 , 3 ,6 , 8 }
= { 1 , 2, 3 , 6 , 8 }
5. B ∩ C = { 2 , 4 } ∩ { 1 , 3 ,6 , 8 }
= { ∅ } or empty set
