DNA Replication Process Overview

DNA replication occurs during interphase when chromosomes duplicate. The enzyme helicase unzips the DNA by breaking hydrogen bonds, and DNA Polymerase adds nucleotides in the 5' to 3' direction. The result is two identical DNA molecules, with each old strand serving as a template for a new strand in a semi-conservative manner.

Steps in DNA Replication

• Occurs when chromosomes duplicate during interphase

• An enzyme called helicase "unzips" the DNA molecule by breaking

the hydrogen bonds between the bases
Steps in DNA Replication
• Nucleotides are added to the template strand by an enzyme called
DNA Polymerase.
• Nucleotides must be added in the 5' --> 3' direction.
Steps in DNA Replication
• The end product of DNA replication is two, identical molecules of
DNA.
• Each old strand of nucleotides serves as a template for each new
strand
• This is called semi-conservative replication.
