Surv Exercise4

The document presents a surveying exercise involving calculations for the inter-visibility of three mountains with varying elevations, considering earth's curvature and refraction. It also includes observations from a two peg test using a dumpy level to determine differences in elevation between points A and B, as well as elevations at various stations. The results provide specific elevation values and corrections necessary for accurate surveying.

SURVEYING – EXERCISE 4

Situation 1: Two mountains A and C have an elevation of 780m and 720m, respectively. Mountain B of
elevation 745m is located 22km from mount A and 25km from mount. C. With respect to the effects of
earth’s curvature and refraction.
1. Compute the elevation of the line of sight at B so that A and C are inter-visible. 𝟕𝟏𝟒. 𝟕𝟗𝒎
2. Compute the equal height of towers constructed at A and C so that the three mountains are inter-visible.
𝟑𝟎. 𝟐𝟏𝒎
3. Compute the height of the tower constructed at A so that B and C are still inter-visible. 𝟓𝟔. 𝟖𝒎
Situation 2: In the two peg test of a dumpy level, the following observation were taken

ROD READING AT INSTRUMENT set up near M INSTRUMENT set up near P

A 0.296 1.563
B 0.910 2.140
Point M is equidistant from both A and B, while P is 2.50m away from A along the extension of line AB
and 79.27m from B.
4. Determine the true difference in elevation between A and B. 0.614m
5. Determine the error in rod reading at B with the instrument still at P. -0.038m
6. Determine the correct reading on rod B for a horizontal line of sight with the instrument still at point P.
2.178m
Situation 3: From the given data:

STATION BS FS ELEVATION
1 5.023 491.45
2 6.03 7.49
3 2.48 7.35
4 5.25 6.18
5 6.01 4.67
6 2.50 5.38
7 4.60
7. Solve directly the elevation at station 3. 487.663 m
8. Solve directly the elevation at station 5. 484.543m
9. Solve directly the elevation at station 7. 483.073m
10. Using the following notes, determine the difference in elevation between BM3 and BM2.

STATION BS FS ELEVATION
BM1 3.24 1435.89
1 4.80 6.16
2 3.45 5.32
BM2 5.52 3.35
3 8.96 5.64
4 8.46 6.72
5 3.55 8.11
6 7.32 2.92
BM3 7.25
