1. FORWARD:
R K ENG make Brinell Hardness Tester Model R K ENG B3000 (J) is a
production type hardness testing machine designed for measuring the
Brinell Hardness of steels and other metals whether flat, round or
irregular in shape. This machine is simple in design, easy to operate,
yet very sensitive and accurate.

2. DESCRIPTION:

The machine assembly is fully enclosed in a steel fabricated

body and the mechanism inside the machine is thus protected from
dust and extraneous elements. The elevating spindle protected by a
telescopic cover.

This machine mainly consists of a “J” frame (1) main lever (2)
Hanger (18), a elevating screw (9), loading unloading mechanism and
damper system. The load is applied on the specimen through ball
holder (13) it is affected through a lever (2) mechanism.

The main lever (2) carries three male vees one for hanger (18)
second for spindle shaft and third for pivot vee. The elevating screw
(9) can be move up and down by rotating nut (10) The five detachable
weights each equivalent to 500 kgf and to be made use of for
application of desired load in addition to the bottom weight equivalent
to 500 kgf. The operating lever (3) is provided for loading and
unloading. For its smooth and strain free operation bearing are
provided.

The damper system consists of mainly cylinder, piston, valve

disc connecting rod and loading speed adjustment knob (14). The
damping sensitivity is adjusted by loading speed adjustment knob
(14). The connecting rod and in turn piston is attached through (4)
mounted on camshaft while operating.

The machine confirms to IS: 2281-1968 AND BS: 240

6. UNPACKING OF MACHINE:

This is being precision testing equipment. It should be handled

very carefully. Maximum precaution is taken while pacing to prevent
any damage in transit. The moving parts of the machine like loading
mechanism is locked, so that it should not move in transit.

The main packing box contains the basic machine and other two
contains the items as follows:

Box no. 1 Basic machine (1 no)

Box no. 2 Standard accessories of machine
Box no. 3 Wt. Set along with wt. Shaft

Moreover the hand lever & instruction manual are packed

separately in the main packing box.

2
R K ENGINEERING Model – B3000J

While unpacking the crate, first remove the top cover. Then remove
the locking wooden struts inside the box and make machine free. Then
remove all the four sides, take out small boxes etc. so that basic
machine only remains on the base plate.

Remove all four nuts from foundation and make machine free
from base. Now the machine should be lifted from the base plate by
means of crane or hoist

The machine hoist. Insert a steel bar of approx. 1” dia. Projecting

few inches from both sides of the machine. The ends of this machine
can be fastened by a rope for lifting purpose. Check up all the parts
according to the packing list of standard accessories, by opening all
boxes.

7. ERECTION (refer drawing on page 13)

The place where the machine is to be erected must be free from

dust. Moreover it should be free from vibration. For the main screw
(9), slot must be provided in foundation. Prepare the foundation as per
the foundation plan. Providing slot for main screw so that the main
screw can pass quite easily through the slot provided.

1. Remove the MS U type clamp that is to fasten the lever (2) fixed in.
Then remove Threads and paper etc.which are used for fastening the
lever.
2. Remove the wooden piece, threads etc. which are used to warp the
main screw (9)
Remove the wooden pieces between plunger (12) and main screw by
rotating the nut (10) in anticlockwise direction.

8. CLEANING OF MACHINE:

Remove the grease on elevating screw (9) by using suitable

solvent applying all around by a brush. Lower elevating screw (9) to
the maximum position remove the main screw extension (8) nut (10)
by unscrewing it from the main screw. Make up and down movement
of the elevating screw by hand applying the solvent. Ensure that main
screw slides freely by its own weight. Clean the bearing surfaces of the
nut and sleeve.

Assemble the nut with thrust bearing and lubricate it with thin
lubricating oil. The main screw should move up and down throughout
the range, when the nut is operated Take out the test table (7) from
the main screw if it is in position and check bearing surface of main
screw as well as test table. Clean the main screw extension & fit the

same in main screw then replace the test table in the main screw
extension.

9. LEVELLING OF THE MACHINE:

Level the machine by keeping the level bottle on the flat table
(7) across and along the length of machine. Use small tapered wages
or proper packing etc. for this purpose.

10. WEIGHTS:

Weights of this machine along with weight hanger are packed

separately in a box. The weight hanger (18) after screwing the
bottom weight hooked on the hanger vee. This assembly is equivalent
to 500 kgf load on the ball indentor. Out of remaining six weights two
are 250 kgf and four are equivalent to 500 kgf load. The total load is
equivalent to 3000 kgf.

11. MOUNTING AND REMOVING OF INDENTORS :

Clean the bottom face of the plunger (12). Tighten the ball
holder (13) its seat by
Sufficient hand pressure.

12. TELESCOPIC COVER FOR MAIN SCREW :

This is protecting the main screw form any dirt or dust. This
consists of three sleeves sliding over each other. Before inserting the
same over the main screw remove the flat table and main screw
extension by unscrewing from main screw. Then insert the same over
main screw, so that its top sleeve rests against the step of main screw.
The maximum test height of 254 mm approx. cannot be used with this
telescopic cover and hence, it should be removed in such rare cases.

13. EXTENSION FOR MAIN SCREW:

The test height of 0-127 mm approx. can be utilized with the

help of extension (8), which the test height of 127-254 mm can be
utilized.

14. LOADING SPEED ADJUSTINGKNOB (14)

The speed of load application is adjusted by the knob (14),

which is provided at right side of the machine. For increasing the
speed, turn the knob to an anticlockwise direction and for decreasing
the speed turn to the clockwise direction.

15. METHOD OF TEST:

For Brinell hardness test, the surface of the specimen on which

the impression is to be made should be flat, smooth, clean, dry and
free from the oxide scales and pits. Ball holder with steel ball of 10
mm or 5 mm diameter and one of the load ranges 3000,1000,750,500
and 250 kgf are to be selected in the test.

For ferrous materials the load range P = 30 X DX D should be

used and for non-ferrous material the load ranges P = 50 XDXD AND
2.5 XDXD should be used respectively.

16. OPERATING OF MACHINE

For carrying out test the following procedure should be adopted
very carefully. Any negligence may lead to spoil the indentor as well as
the machine.

I. Keep the operating lever (3) in horizontal position.

II. Place the specimen on the testing table.
III. Turn the nut in clockwise direction, so that the specimen will
push the indentor (13)
IV. Lift the operating lever (3) from horizontal position upwards
slightly, after which it rotates automatically.
V. Wait till the lever (3) becomes standstill.
VI. Bring the lever back to horizontal position.
VII. Turn back the nut and remove the specimen, carry the same
procedure for further specimens.
VIII. Measure the diameter of impression by Brinell Microscope and
find out the Brinell hardness number referring the chart.

17. CHECK ON PROPER INDICATION:

The standard test blocks supplied along with the machine can
verify the accuracy of tester. In case of deviations from the indicated
value beyond the limits given, is noticed while testing against 10 mm
ball holder and 5 mm ball holder, then change the ball. The standard
hardness test block supplied with the machine should only be used in
case of doubts in the accuracy of the results.

18. MAINTANACE:

I. The main screw (9) and thrust bearing faces should be kept clean
and well lubricated.
II. For dash pot AVLON 52 (Veedol) oil is required. Check the
hydraulic oil level every six months. (It is quite possibility there
may be some loss of oil in transit or after longer service)
III. Knife-edges of the main lever (2) should be checked once in year.
Apply grease for all knife-edges.
