1. It is a control experiment, to ensure a fair test by eliminating other possible
causes of the experiment result.
2. It is because alcohol is flammable, we should avoid any contact between
alcohol and a flame.

Using rheostat to control current size
Before starting this experiment, let’s recall the relation between the length of
the wire used in a circuit and the resistance of the circuit.
1. When we clip one end of the nichrome wire and slowly slide the contact of
the other clip along the wire to the other end. Will this action give a larger or
a smaller resistance to the circuit? (Circle the correct answer.)
Sliding the wire will give a larger/smaller resistance to the circuit.

Using universal indicator solution to
find the pH values of some substances
In this experiment, we shall add few drops of universal indicator solution to each of
six different substances. By matching the colours of the liquids against the pH colour
chart, we can find their pH values.
Question
John adds a few drops of universal indicator solution to a certain liquid. Then he
matches the colour of the liquid with the pH colour chart above. He finds that the pH
value of the liquid lies between 2 and 3. So he records the result as 2.5. Is he correct?
Why?

Answers
No, he is incorrect.
The pH colour chart only provides integral numbers (整數數字) of pH values. So
the pH value recorded can only be rounded to the nearest integer.
John can only take either pH 2 or 3, and pH 2.5 is not allowed.

How is sound produced?
A tuning fork is a U-shaped steel bar, which vibrates when struck to give a sound. The
number on the tuning fork indicates the number of times that the fork vibrates in one
second. For example, A 256-C tuning fork vibrates 256 times in one second. The
larger the number on a tuning fork, the shorter its length.
Do not tap a tuning fork on the bench, and any hard or fragile objects because it is
brittle (易碎). On the other hand, do not put the tuning fork too close to your ear
after tapping the tuning fork onto a rubber stopper as instructed.
Question
What does the number on a tuning fork indicate?

11 Force and Motion
Force and extension of spring
A spring balance consists of a spring fixed at one end and with a hook at the other.
The spring extends when the hook is pulled by a force. The length of the spring
extended depends on the size of the force. If a 1-N force applied causes the spring of
a spring balance to extend 2 cm, the relation between the length of the spring
extended and the size of the force applied is shown below.
The length of the spring extended The size of the force applied
0 cm 0N
2 cm 1N
4 cm 2N
6 cm 3N
The size of the force can be represented by the length of the spring extended. Note
that the extensions of the springs of different spring balances are different for the
same force.

Questions
1. Which of the following statements is correctly?
(1) The length of the spring depends on the size of the force applied.
(2) A 1-N force causes the spring of every spring balance to extend 2 cm.
(3) Doubling the force pulling a spring balance causes the spring of the spring
balance to double.
A. (1) only
B. (3) only
C. (1) and (2) only
D. (2) and (3) only
2. The initial length of a spring is 20 cm. The length of the spring becomes 28 cm
when a force of 2 N is applied on the spring to extend it. Determine the length
of the spring when a force of 1 N is applied on the spring.
A. 4 cm
B. 12 cm
C. 24 cm
D. 32 cm

Studying the size of the action and reaction (Demo)
We have learnt that an action and its reaction act on different bodies at the same
time and are opposite in direction. In this experiment, we will study the size of an
action and its reaction.
Note the following points in the experiment.
• The track has to be horizontal. Use a level ruler (水平尺) or a levelling
application for smartphones to make sure that the track is horizontal.
• The trolleys have to be pushed or pulled gently.
• The string used has to be inextensible (不能伸延).
