POST-TRIAL PERSONNEL CONFINED IN MARINE CORPS BRIGS

1. Purpose. To establish procedures for wearing the


standardized prisoner uniform by pretrial and post-trial
prisoners confined in Marine Corps brigs.

2. Cancellation. MCO 1640.5A.

3. Background. Paragraph 5201.2 of the reference authorizes


CMC to implement a standardized prisoner uniform when directed
service-wide.

4. Uniform Description

a. There will be two, distinct in color, standardized


uniform for prisoners in Marine Corps brigs. The pretrial
uniform is Post Blue. The uniform for post-trial prisoners is
International Orange.

b. The prisoner uniform is a three-piece uniform,


consisting of a shirt, trousers, and cap.

c. The shirt and trousers are an 8 1/2-ounce weight


poly-cotton blended fabric. The shirt is a long sleeve,
V-neck, pullover with a left breast pocket. The trousers have
an elastic waist band, mock fly front, with no pockets. All
seams and hems will be triple stitched. The waist band is
bound with four rows of stitching. There are no buttons on the
uniform. The uniform is available in sizes small, medium,
large, and X-large.

d. The cap has a solid polyester front and nylon mesh


back. It has a reinforced crown and unbreakable visor with an
adjustable back tab so one size fits all.

5. Policy

a. All pretrial and post-trial prisoners in all custody


grades, to include installation custody, shall wear the
standardized prisoner uniform.

b. Replenishment of prisoner uniforms shall be the
responsibility of the local commands. Shirts and trousers may
be procured through the Federal Prison Industries, Incorporated
(UNICOR), Washington, DC, (202) 508-8452, ask for Textiles.
Caps may be replenished through local purchase.

c. The prisoner uniform will be worn with boots, bloused.


During winter months, gray sweat shirts and/or white long johns
may be worn under the prisoner uniform. The green sateen field
jacket is authorized for wear with the prisoner uniform.

d. The prisoner uniforms will be marked "Brig" using


1-inch letters with indelible, black ink. The shirt will be
marked inside and centered, 1-inch below the neck band. The
trousers will be marked 1-inch below the waist band on the
outside rear. Shirts and trousers will be marked with their
sizes below the "Brig" marking.

e. Any change in the color or style of prisoner uniforms


is strictly prohibited.

f. The prisoner uniforms will be worn to all activities


with the exception of courts-martial, civil hearings, and when
being transferred to other confinement facilities, at which
time the appropriate seasonal uniform or civilian attire,
dependent on discharge status, shall be worn.

g. This Order is not applicable to Marine Corps prisoners


confined at the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks, Fort Leavenworth, KS.

6. Action. CO’s of Marine Corps brigs are directed to ensure


the provisions of this Order are being implemented.

7. Reserve Applicability. This Order is not applicable to the


Marine Corps Reserve.
