TECHNICAL WRITING
Technical writing can be defined as a specific type of writing in which the
author is writing about a particular subject that requires direction ,
instruction or further explanations.
Inbrief technical writing is used in technical and occupational field such as
computers, software, hardware, research, finance etc.
Technical writing is used to inform, instruct, or direct a specific audience
through maximum clarity and precision with a specific tangible goal in mind.

• Lab Reports
• Manuals
• Resumes
• Forms and Surveys
• Business Documents (e.g. Founding documents and proposals)
• Contracts and Reports
• Job Application Materials
• Factual Data Statistics
PURPOSE OF TECHNICAL WRITING
▪ To inform : To provide information without expecting any action on the
part of the reader.
▪ To instruct : To give information in the form of directions, instruction ,
procedures so that reader will be able to do something.
▪ To propose : To respond to a request for proposals or to suggest a plan
of action for a specific problem.
RULES FOR TECHNICAL WRITING
➢ Know your purpose.
➢ Know your audience.
➢ Write in clear, conversational style.
➢ Be direct, concise, specific, and consistent.
➢ Prefer the active voice over the passive.
➢ Break the writing up into short, readable sections.
➢ Use stacked lists and visuals if appropriate.

CRITERIA FOR TECHNICAL WRITING
Good technical writing is concise, focused, easy to understand, free of errors and audience- based.
Technical writers focus on making their documents as clear as possible, avoiding overly Technical phrases
and stylistic choices.
▪ Technical writing presents information clearly leaving little to no room for misunderstanding .It
requires the use of clear, concise sentence.
▪ This type of writing is straightforward; it requires relaying on information in a way that is direct
and straight to the point.
▪ Providing essential information without padding and inappropriate jargon.
▪ Visually and physically appealing presentation.
▪ Technical terminology must match the reader’s level of knowledge.
▪ Document builds coherently , progressively towards its goal.
▪ Concise, precise, describing objects and procedures in in an exact manner.
▪ Writing relies on denotative meaning of words to ensure that misunderstandings don't occur.
▪ Informative, meaningful, descriptive headings and include a thorough table of contexts or/and
index.
▪ Has the necessary titles and front matter to characterize the report:
o Forecasting statements.
o Purpose statements.
o Statement of task for reader.
o To whom it is directed.
• Free of distracting mechanical errors.
• Convey an overall impression of authority, thoroughness, soundness and honest work.
