Hydraulics Problem Set for Civil Engineering

This document is a problem set for a Hydraulics course in the Civil Engineering Department, covering various scenarios related to irrigation canals, weirs, hydraulic jumps, and fluid dynamics. Each situation presents specific parameters and asks for calculations regarding discharge, capacity, and other hydraulic properties. The problems require complete solutions to be shown and submitted for grading.

PROBLEM SOLVING. Solve the following problems in a clean sheet of paper, show your COMPLETE
SOLUTION and BOX your FINAL ANSWERS. Send a clear picture of your quiz for checking.

Situation 1. An irrigation canal with trapezoidal cross sections has the following dimensions. Bottom
width = 2.0m, depth of water = 0.9m, side slope = 1.5 horizontal to 1 vertical, slope of the canal bed =
0.001, coefficient of roughness, n = 0.025. The canal will serve a clay – loam riceland for which the duty of
water per hectare is 3 liters/sec. Determine the number of hectares served by the irrigation canal.

Situation 2. A rectangular canal 5.7m wide and 1.4m deep has a roughness coefficient, n = 0.013 and is
laid on a slope of 0.002.

a. What is the capacity of the canal when flowing full in m³/s?

b. What is the savings in excavation volume per meter length of canal if the most efficient section
is used for the same discharge and slope?

Situation 3. Find the width in m of the channel at the back of a suppressed weir using the following data,
H = 285mm, d = 2.485m, Q = 0.84m³/s. Consider the velocity of approach.

Situation 4. The length of the crest of a trapezoidal weir is 2m. The sides are sloping at 75°57’49’’ with the
horizontal. Find the discharge in m³/s

Situation 5. Hydraulic jump occurs in a trapezoidal channel with sideslopes of 1:1 and base of 4m. If the
upstream depth before the jump is 1.0m and downstream depth is 2m. What is the discharge in m³/s?

Situation 6. A large cylindrical steel tank, 4m high with its bottom on level ground contains two layers of
liquid. The bottom layer is 2m deep. The top layer is occupied by a liquid whose specific gravity is not
known to a depth of 1m. A 50mm diameter orifice with a coefficient of velocity of 0.98 is situated one
meter from the bottom of the tank. The jet from the orifice hits the ground 2.75m horizontally away from
the vena contracta. Determine the specific gravity of the liquid.

Situation 7. A water tank is filled with water to a height of 4.3m above the 10mm diameter orifice which
is connected at the side of the tank, how far would the water have travelled horizontally if the orifice is
4.3m above the ground.

Situation 8. Two open cylindrical tanks are connected by an orifice having a cross sectional area of
0.004m². Tank A is 8m in diameter and its water level is 10m above that of Tank B whose diameter is 5m. If
the coefficient of discharge is 0.60,

a. Find the discharge flowing in the orifice.

b. How long will it be before the water surfaces are at the same level?

c. How soon after will the surfaces be 4m apart?

Situation 9. A channel has vertical wall 2m apart and a semi-circular invert. The channel has a centerline
depth of 1.5m, the bed slope is 1 in 2000 and the discharge is 1m³/s.

a. Determine the roughness coefficient

b. Determine the Chezy’s C value.

c. Determine the friction factor.

Situation 10. An open channel is to be designed to carry 2.5m³/s at a slope of 0.005. The channel material
has an n-value of 0.015.

a. Find the most efficient cross section for a rectangular section.

b. Find the most efficient cross section for a triangular section.

c. Find the most efficient cross section for a trapezoidal section.

d. Find the most efficient cross section for a circular section.
